Not really surprising since we are 12 years into the 'New' system.

Some stats out from the Department of Transport today for anyone interested.

    2,174,779 private cars registered
1,583,441 are on the CO2 system

    Some other interesting stats.
    Only 7 Rolls-Royces registered but 51 Infinitis
Still 11 Protons on the road

Maybe I read page 5 of the report wrong but it looks like there are 9 cars greater than 3L that are in Tax Category A1??

Loads of other stats in for anyone whose interested

Wow. Since 2017 we now have imported 67% of the 2008 diesel Ford Focuss sold in the UK.

A change to a more punitive system would seem likely.

Another illustration of how far Fiat has declined in the Irish market - 20k Fiats on our roads vs 96k BMWs and even Vauxhall (a brand which hasn't sold new cars here for decades) has 32k.

It might be interesting to look at the proportion of each brand in each county. E.g. Galway City/County has a higher population than Co. Kildare yet Kildare has nearly double the amount of Renaults - possibly influenced by the presence of a long established Renault dealership in Naas?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 73,520 ✭✭✭✭colm_mcm

There are feck all Fiat dealers left and the only car they have that people might buy is the 500 which is out since 2007.

A good dealer can make a huge difference to numbers in a county.

Looks like Co. Offaly has way more Citroens than it should have for its size - due to Freddie Vaugh and/or Hugo Loonam dealerships? I have heard good things about Freddie Vaugh.

Page 18 and 19 are interesting too. Goods vehicles by Brand. 1600 odd BMWs, I presume they are X5 conversions.

But there are other random brands there that I can't even think would have a vehicle this is suitable to be converted - Chevrolet, Chrysler, Mazda and Rover?? 692 Commercial Rovers?

Could still be some Montego vans knocking around and Range Rovers are more than likely covered under Land Rover brand

I would say every commercial ‘rover’ is a discovery or range rover or defender, 692 sounds low for that though. Theres atleast 3 commercially registered land rovers in my estate alone

Could be mostly Discoveries and Range Rovers that should have been registered under Land Rover. I was just in horror at the thought of that many Montegos still in existence...

65 Kubota "private cars"?? Also a few Ivecos and LDV/DAFs - I wonder are these are buses/vans which have been taxed as private vehicles for whatever reason? Kubota makes the least sense though as there's separate classifications for excavators, etc.

I've seen a Holden ute around Cork city.

    Great info there OP.

Came across it a few years ago when looking for some stats in work. Heard the news last week and it reminded me of it.

I think you have to look at it a few times see all the different items.

The Porsche Cayennes in tax category A1 was an eye opener for me! We will see more of this in the next few years as manufacturers moved to Hybrid to meet their fleet emissions requirements.

That there is over 100,000 left cars registered between 1990 and 2003 is a surprise too. It's rare around me in Dublin to see anything older than 2006.

They are a brand of Honda not sold here. Sold in the UK though. https://www.infiniti.co.uk/

I'd say a lot of the Rollers are over 30 so included in the vintage figures. And a lot would be taxed and used as limousines.

I'm driving a 2006 and have no intention of getting rid of it. The older stuff is just getting less common. The insurance hikes on older stuff a few years ago wiped out a lot of them I think.

Lots of fleet Insignias brought in 2011 to 2015, mid size Vauxhalls always outnumbered Opels up here. Think it came from the time of the 88 to 95 Cavalier, the only Opel version seemed to be the 1.6 base model, there were some brilliant Vauxhall versions

I was in a dacia 1320 on a snowy mountain road outside vatra dornei, at points I considered walking on the highway, on foot, in the dark, at -8 degrees to be marginally safer than remaining in the dacia. I still think the build quality of the modern dacia lineup and how they crumple in a crash makes 80s German cars a much safer place to be.

Build quality of the modern Dacia lineup is fine, naturally there is evidence of cost cutting - for instance I had a 2020 Logan MCV recently and it had no engine temperature gauge, plastics were hard but it was well built all the same. They do appear to crumple more than other modern cars in crash tests. Still considerably safer than any 1980s German car with the possible exception of a G Wagen or an airbagged W126.

that was kind of my point. Dacias were horrific in the 80s but so were other cars, they may have come on leaps and bounds but still leaps and bounds behind the competition. the W126 was exactly what I was thinking, I would absolutely prefer to be hit in a 1984 500 SEL than a brand new sandero.

Does a modern car really need an engine temperature gauge though? I don’t think it does. Certainly it needs a warning if the temperature is too high, which the Dacia has.

The likes of a Yaris never had one either.
