In a break from normal tradition, we will kick of with 2 Free-4-all matches. Each one contains 15 acts, with 1 act from each going through to the first round

Please vote for 1 act from each match
First act to reach 3 votes in each will advance
2 hours time limit, I will cast deciding vote in the event of a tie

Vote for Aerosmith in first match. Seems a shame to lose some of the others but Aerosmith are awesome.

And I'm torn on the second one. I'm going to give Crowded House a vote to give them a chance but I wouldnt mind Belinda Carlisle getting through either.

Match 1 - Aerosmith, although I'd never really think of them as an 80s band

    Match 2 - Billy Idol

    Free-4-All - Match 1

    Toto
Tough call between Toto and Aerosmith as both have plenty of songs I love, but I'm more likely to throw on a bit of Toto than Aerosmith

    Free-4-All - Match 2

    Foreigner
Some big names with some big hits in here like Billy Idol, Belinda Carlisle, and Kim Carnes, but Foreigner have quite a few songs that immediately spring to mind when you think of the '80s

Awww loads I love but I have to pick 2

    Bananarama
    Billy idol

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,943 ✭✭✭✭the purple tin

    1. Bananarama [one of the first bands I think of re the 80's]

    2. The Pretenders [great pop-rock group and Chrissy was and still is sexy as hell]

Are all those acts bar the 2 we’re voting on now gonna be out of the competition?

I'm afraid so, these are all wild card acts, nobody nominated them.

Please note, I made a mistake with the inclusion of The Human League, they have been removed from match 2.

I left out Billy Idol thinking loads would choose him. Thank god someone else chose it.

But The pretenders as a wild card makes me sad too :(

I'm just voting Queen here, not fussed on the results of the others.

Reason for Queen - A potential winner, phenomenal act led by one of the best frontmen of all time.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 18,503 ✭✭✭✭Also Starring LeVar Burton

Stevie Wonder ; who doesn't love a bit of Stevie Wonder

Depeche Mode ; one of my nominations. Big Depeche Mode fan

Queen ; prefer their '70s stuff, but will do for now

Eurythmics ; just missed out on a spot in my own nomination

L7 - as much as I love love love Stevie Wonder. L7 has a real 80s feel.
Simply Red - Once again, I love em both but I nominated Simply Red. They’re brilliant.
    Queen - Enuff said
Eurythmics - argh another tough choice but culture club up against a VERY BIG hitter.

L7 - not a fan, but some of Stevie Wonder's songs in the 80s were woeful

Depeche Mode - Simply Red must die!!!!!

Lloyd Cole and the Commotions - probably fighting a losing battle in this one, but sticking with my nomination. Rattlesnakes is still one of my all time favourite albums.

Eurythmics - wasn't a big fan of either, but Eurythmics had some decent songs

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,943 ✭✭✭✭the purple tin

Stevie Wonder vs vs L7 [L7 did a great cover of Three Days but I wouldn't really consider them an 80s band, Stevie had some big hits through the 80s]

Depeche Mode vs Simply Red [I'm not mad keen on DM but they are miles better than SR]

Queen vs Lloyd Cole and the Commotions [unfortunate first draw for LC, Queen are the champions in this match-up]

Eurythmics vs Culture Club [Do you Really Want to Hurt Me, hard to think of a more stereotypical 80s number than that]

  • Moderators, Recreation & Hobbies Moderators Posts: 16,287 Mod ✭✭✭✭quickbeam

Stevie Wonder vs vs L7 - Stevie Wonder, never heard of the other
Depeche Mode vs Simply Red - Depeche Mode because I will vote for anyone who is against the awful Simply Red
Queen vs Lloyd Cole and the Commotions - Queen because they're Queen
Eurythmics vs Culture Club - Eurythmics because I prefer them.

  • Moderators, Social & Fun Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 56,723 Mod ✭✭✭✭Necro

I'll give a vote to Simply Red to help out Strawbs ;)

    Stevie Wonder vs vs L7
Depeche Mode vs Simply Red - love Depeche Mode, Simply Red are crap
Queen vs Lloyd Cole and the Commotions , LC simply has no chance here I fear
Eurythmics vs Culture Club - I like both but Eurythmics shades it

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,067 ✭✭✭✭ShaneU

    Stevie Wonder vs vs L7

L7 only had one 80s album, and Stevie's best music was in the 70s so I don't think either as 80's acts

    Depeche Mode vs Simply Red

If Stars was released in the 80's I would have said Simply Red

Queen vs Lloyd Cole and the Commotions

Live aid performance was one of the most memorable 80's moments

    Eurythmics vs Culture Club

Easy choice here, Eurythmics had some of the best songs of the decade

    Depeche Mode 6 - 2 Simply Red
Queen 6 - 1 Lloyd Cole and the Commotions
