Does the wind / runway direction impact landings?
There’s only been one missed approach in Shannon today and it’s accepted diversions from Dublin and Cork. Operations have been normal despite weather conditions. Only flight delays. The winds have been high.

yes, wind direction is much more favourable for Shannon’s runway than any at Dublin. ↗️ is the direction of the wind and suits landing on 24 over 28 or 16.

Generally aircraft are limited by the crosswind component, so the likes of Dublin with RWY 28 (facing 280°) will fare worse than Shannon with RWY24 (facing 240°) in this wind from the southwest.

The Ryanair flights still can't manage to get down at Cork.

Its a direct crosswind at Cork, and quite strong too.

LX410 is returning to Geneva after two go arounds at Dublin.

I'm really not looking forward to the absolute nightmare tabloid articles and facebook posts about the "horrendous" treatment by the various airlines today. Its inevitable.

A little bit of accurate communication would go a long way though. I expected a delay today after seeing everything that went on and tracking planes during the day.

We had to go to airport to check in though on time because the app and departures info were still showing as being on time. Even though it seemed very clear that there was no plane on the way here for us.

    Scheduled for 22:00 departure.

Email and push notification at 20:05 delaying to 23:30

Email and push notification at 20:22 updating delay to 02:50

Both emails said if you had bags it would close at normal time so you had to still attend airport on time.

Email and push notification at 22:14 to update delay to 05:45

Push notification then to say they were looking for a hotel and transport and would update.

Half hour later a push notification to update to 3:30am.

5 minutes later another notification back to 5:45am.

Heading for midnight now and in a queue for the €4 voucher and nobody here any wiser as to if accommodation is being sourced or not.

Acknowledging that it's not a given that inbound plane equals outbound plane, and things changing operationally but the outbound flight still hasnt left Dublin yet so I don't believe there was ever any chance of the two earlier times - nor do I believe there will be any accommodation or transport provided. :D

Can you imagine the difficulties for the airlines' ops people, with lots of aircraft diverted elsewhere and a constantly evolving situation right across their network? If there was zero communication it would be worse. It's a risk that we all take when booking a trip - that a major weather event will occur and plans will be thrown into disarray. It's something that airlines can do very little about and, from monitoring the activity at Dublin during the day, I think the aircrew and ATC worked very well and tried their best to get people safely to their destinations. However the winds remained adverse for most of the day and I believe there were more than 50 go-arounds, most of which involved flights then diverting elsewhere.

Sources like Flight Radar are very handy when you're delayed. The likes of Ryanair will drip feed you information, but at least you can see where the aircraft that you're waiting for is. So when they do their usual carry on of not letting you know how long you'll be waiting, you will have a good idea by looking up the previous aircraft movement.

Yeah that's how I knew there was no way we were leaving on time. But still forced to turn up at the airport what will be 9 hours before the flight because they didn't update / and even when they did at first it was to still tell everyone to go to airport on time.

I can live with delays, totally understand weather playing havoc, and the massive job it was / is to deal with it all. I just don't think it's too much of an ask to be given accurate information.

As a further example, ground staff here have now said they won't be sourcing accommodation etc because they don't think the 5:45 departure is accurate :D

I see the plane is outbound now at least.

Shannon ran out of buses yesterday evening so inbound diverted pax were told that they had to make their own way to their destinations.

I'd be interested to hear some of the stories from pax diverted to the UK and elsewhere about how their experiences were, be it, replacement aircraft, accomodation, food etc, almost an impossible task in some cases for airlines.

With it being the start of the working week there will be some upset people no doubt unable to get to work/school this morning, thinking of the Tenerife flight diverted to the UK especially

Currently in Berlin, EI flight home was cancelled (as the outbound from Dublin was cancelled) - group of 23 of us (plus others of course).

Having walked through the airport, we found one member of ground staff who told us to scan a qr code for a hotel voucher for 1 night and make our own way to the hotel (trains off, so it was 2 buses apparently). No other information forthcoming. Per communication with the group leader, EI can't get us back till Tuesday night. Ground staff do nothing for 2 night delays, it's left to the passengers to sort it.

My group decided to make our own hotel arrangements for 2 nights, so we're not stuck in an airport hotel 20km from the city. We had to organise same, plus transport. No offers of food, etc - the airport was pretty much closed so there weren't any options!

Keep receipts for everything obviously (food, travel, accomodation) That sounds like a nightmare. Can you not get a train to another airport(Hamburg maybe) and get a flight home today? Just claim it back

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,085 ✭✭✭Pacing Mule

It landed at 3am but we didn't get on it until 3 hours later at 6am. Just back in Dub now.

Be aware that EU261 compensation does not cover disruption caused by extreme weather, so you may not qualify for reimbursement.

But it's still the airlines responsibility to get you back to your destination. Whatever about compensation, which wouldn't be payable, i'd be pretty sure you can claim back relevant expenses that you incur

How do crews fare out with hours restrictions on the likes of the flight that went Dub to Marseille, leaving at 7am, then diverted to Glasgow on return and then diverted to Shannon when trying again, eventually arriving in Dublin at 02.37am. Presumably there had to be a crew change in there somewhere?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,142 ✭✭✭Chris_5339762

Yes you won't get the 250eur UK/EU261 compensation as it is a weather delay.

But the airline has duty-of-care to get you to your destination, so they should cover hotels/food/transport.

I was on a flight to Dublin yesterday that diverted to MAN. Within an hour of landing I had been rebooked- to travel on Tuesday morning back to Dublin via an airport on the continent. Staff at the service agent in MAN were clueless and were just taking names of passengers who needed hotel accom, without actually providing any. I guess someone else in the organisation was busy bargaining with hotels, and that anyone who showed up at the desk earlier would have gotten a call later on with hotel details. In any case, with me and a bunch of other passengers needing to be in work today, we hopped in a taxi to Holyhead and took the ferry back. Let's just say I was glad I hadn't eaten much yesterday. It was verrry rough.

Taxi to Hollyhead… that must have been some bill. How much did it come to and how many shared it?

No Crew change on that one.

Unless they had reserve crew on hand in Glaagow or Shannon.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 792 ✭✭✭useless

just over €200 between 4 of us. €59 for the ferry. Will try to claim it from the airline but I wont be holding my breath. The irony is that it would've cost them much more if they'd had to pay for two hotel nights and meals for me as per their original proposal.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 882 ✭✭✭LiamaDelta

I don't think you'll have trouble getting that back, depending on the airline. I've had weather cancellations on both EI and FR recently and was refunded the flight and taxi fare home without issue.

Casa left it's ADSB on while it's currently en-route towards Rockall…. hopefully no position updates over HF or SATCOM, as it will give their grid ref format away….

Also lurking off the west coast is a B-52, not showing on any sites at the moment.
