Wherever you have two people you will have two opinions. Many, many estates around the country work on the civilised basis that a residents' group collects money for and organises getting green areas cut. While I agree about biodiversity, it is not practical or reasonable to leave a large green area to go rampant. Mainly because there are always ignorant people who will assume this means it is 'waste' ground and they can dump their old settees on it. So long as everything goes along peacefully the council is not interested in what happens so long as it isn't built on and isn't overly annoying anyone.

An estate I lived on had a large green area with houses overlooking it just at one end - everyone else was sideways on, or it bordered other areas. A couple of people in the overlooking houses objected to kids playing football on the green, even though they were some 150m away, downhill of the houses, till the kids stopped. Complete waste of a large open green space.

Part of the green had a large ancient hedge along it, of some historical significance. The estate that was built backing onto this hedge had as part of their planning that they could not interfere with this hedge - which was to the east of them. It did not take long for each house to have the Saturday morning diggers come along and rip out the hedge in sections, till only a short length was left. There was nothing could be done about it as there was no one in the council offices on a saturday, and anyway by the time anyone came the hedge would be gone. 200+ years growing, 2 hours being ripped out. They did eventually send out a letter, but the damage was done and its now a scruffy, weedy ditch.

You are at nothing OP with the bozo who pulled up the trees, which were not only behind his house but also beyond a shed so they would have been hard enough to see from his house. It was a pointless piece of vandalism but there is nothing you can do about it. It may, technically, have not been your business to plant trees, but that is between you and the council, it isn't his call to interfere with land that has no connection to him.

If the shed is really oppressive and big though a confidential letter to the Planning Authority has to be dealt with by them, and they might take exception to the structure. They might also be interested in his unapproved alternative access to his site. It would at least give your man a bit of aggro.

Just as an aside, does anyone here feel that a general hostility to trees is embedded in the Irish psyche?

Personally no. Love trees. Have various ones in the garden as do my neighbors. But poorly selected never maintained thoughtless planting doesn't work either.

I'd imagine the OP planting he trees where he did they never even considered removing sunlight from that person's house. It didn't even pass into the realm of thought Which is probably why they were so shocked.

Perhaps having a chat with people about what your doing and not just doing what you like is in order.
