If the pubs reopen with some measure of social distancing, precautions etc. Will you return to the local soon after or will you give it a miss for a while yet?

Will you go to your local if restrictions are lifted? 163 votes

Yes, fell it's safe enough with some measures.

I'd be extremely dubious of distancing efforts in a pub after people have had a few drinks, so I'll give it a miss for some time.

What if they introduce a measure, where you have to have a shot of Domestos as your first and last drink, to ensure you're not a threat to society?

Fair enough. I'd limit what I'd have to drink to reduce the time.

Social distancing with people having a few jars under their belt and communal toilets. Yeah I can see that working

The local rural pub at won't have a problem with social distancing. They are empty a lot of the time.

I can't see the staff constantly wiping down every possible surface all the time. Let's face it, with a few drinks, a lot of people spray when they talk. Even without it being excessive, you really want to be in an environment like that during covid?

Unless, of course, you don't give a flying f. Which I imagine there's quite a few people out there like that.

Lots of people standing close to each other, yapping away is probably going to be the biggest threat, but then there's also the fact that the virus can live on surfaces for a while, and that could mean that if you sit down at a table where, say, an asymptomatic carrier was sat just an hour before, you could be in trouble and not even know it.

It would therefore be essential for publicans to carry out strong hygiene measures on a daily basis beyond the old routine of cleaning the glasses and throwing a puck into the mens' urinal trough. And that leaves you wondering if publicans would even take their new responsibilities seriously, and would there even be any proper oversight to check that they were?

Probably hourly spray and wipe down, face shields, reconfigure toilet arrangements and serve beer in a large pitcher (5Ltr) at a time to reduce interactions.

As much as I’d miss going for a scoop I wouldn’t go anywhere near one for the foreseeable, whether I’m allowed or not.

I wouldn't say you're the only one. A lot of pubs that were already on the edge wouldn't be able to stay afloat in an Ireland where the restrictions were lifted but people are still playing it safe.

    Each!

Well, depends on the time you'd get to finish it. Could get a bottle to carry home anything left?

I think they should never have being closed and serve only our native holy water "poteen"
As they say "kill or cure" no virus will be able able for it.
It s doubled in price in the last Month....

My Granny swore by it as a cure for chest ailments in man or beast. Very strong too around 90% alcohol!

    I'd have no issue going.

And posters are right most of the social distancing would probably go out the window as people get pissed but so what, by then itll well be time to rip off the band aid.

This thing is go to be here for a while so unless you plan self isolating for another 18 months we may aswell just get on with it.

We cant even social distance sober. Whats the point in opening bars and hoping for a better return?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 157 ✭✭Liamo57

I love a few pints, kids reared and all that. I never thought I'd say that I cound'nt give a sh..e if I ever drank in a pub again. I'm living in the country and the virus has had very little impact on my life. Gardening, cycling, writing, reading etc. mortgage paid, no money worrie's, thank God. Simple life. I count my blessings. I enjoy the few cans and a glass of wine, so the pub means nothing to me anymore.

There's a difference between returning to a semblance of normality (work, meeting friends, shopping, etc), and putting yourself in an environment with a high probability of transmission. (which is why I'm delaying my returning to work, since I need to fly there)

Still, I do agree in a way. A fair percentage of the population will just have to roll the dice (repeatedly) when it comes to exposure. I'd say to hold off for another month or two before jumping into any such environment. Wait until we have better or more reliable research into covid than we do now. As it is, there's too much disinformation, and theories rather than definite guarantees.

Depends really, On where the pub is and how many the bar would let it.

If it was my local, only let my parish in, could keep five meter distancing I'd probably pop in for a couple to be honest.

Tis a brave man that'd drink the first pint out of a tap that hasn't filled a glass in months! Could be more lethal than the bloody virus. Customers capsized all over the country on account of dodgy pints.

Didn't think of that! Wouldn't like two month old Murphy's after the break from the pub.

I guess the breweries must be taking back unused kegs now?

Yup I'll go back whenever they open, not going to live in fear.

Depends on how they manage it.

The supermarkets and banks around here do a good job of cleaning and providing sanitizers etc. for customers.

If the pubs kept the numbers down and followed the lead of the supermarkets and banks I would be happy enough that the risk was low.

But then, I only ever have two or three pints and stay for an hours or so.

Might be different for those who drink more and hang in till closing.

I will give all pubs a week or two to let them get used to it and then you won't stop me going. I cannot wait and the sooner the better.

The end game is upon us, the only thing keeping them closed at the moment is the non-drinking high horse brigade, they are loving it.

I started off strongly in favour of the lockdown I now think it is a massive mistake.

But I don't get you some pubs are offering a takeout service and there is loads of drink at the supermarkets.

Drink sales have never been higher.

No pubs equals no drink so no restaurants equals no food?

Events seem to have overtaken the poll. Pubs to re open Aug 10th. Those that can anyway.

Your post was a bit of a mouthful. I am still dissecting it, so if I don't get to all your points I apologise.

I am a simple man. I hate restaurants, they bore me to death. Food is for eating. I eat my dinner in about 5 minutes and then I go drinking for about 5 hours. I don't drink on my own. I like company when I drink. I need people to bounce off ( sometimes literally). Take out services are a gimmick.

I have been zoooooming with pals every so often, it is better than a kick in the arse. But I miss being hammered in a pub and enjoying myself, I am like that.

I am not sure if you are trying to patronise me or invent something you might read in a fortune cookie? I will let you know when I work it out.

It was great talking with you btw. Bring on the 10th August. They should make it a national holiday.

I hear ya. Nothing worse than no one to listen to my bull**** after a few, even if they don't agree.

I don't attend pubs nor do I wish to. I don't have a local either, the nearest pub is 2.5 miles away but that is two townlands away so the people there aren't even my neighbours.

I can just imagine my local pubs, full of pott bellied balding Irish "ganches" as we say in Ulster, loud mouths. The topic of conversation would range from "fudbal" to Nathan Carter.

I can't know how it is in your local but I like the open conversation. Very democratic and you don't have to be a genius to have a chat about anything from the doctor to the lad who fixes the roads. I do miss it.

Yeah they’ll definitely just leave them exactly as they are. Maybe put some poison in too, in case the beer isn’t gone off enough in them.
