You’ll never get number 4 so 6/7 may do.

Volvo Xc40 available on zero percent finance at that price.

Why SUV? If you opt for a high spec saloon you would have more options. I don't get the appeal of SUV 's personally.

people that change to driving suv rarely change back, there is little demand for cars in the second hand market

What is it you feel your car has over an SUV, that makes the car better?

Have a look at the Skoda Kodiaq. Lots of room, decent on the motorway and should be within budget.

Been driving saloon for years. But I found the seating position in an SUV much comfortable and even the view is better, so less strain while driving.

Main questions, do you need a 7 or 5 seater?

Fair enough, I was just curious. I've tried them & personally didn't like being so high & more roll when turning, maybe it just takes a bit of getting used to.
I've a seat leon estate, bigger boot than an SUV & for me easier to handle/park. I'd probably go bigger saloon type next.
    Good luck with your search.

I don't get the appeal of Burger King, Pizza or the colour blue!

Thankfully its my choice and a bit like someone wanting an SUV!

    Seat ateca FR dsg?
should come in well below budget, I have the 1.5 tsi dsg and I find it great, granted I only do small miles, but I occasionaly to a 300km trip to my son's house and it does this trip no problem. I did test drive a few suv's before buying this and found this handled better than the rest I tried, ie. little or no body roll in comparison.

Much better fuel economy, handling, performance and less chance of killing a pedestrian if you are unlucky enough to hit someone at low speeds.

I don’t think every thread which mentions a SUV needs page full of posts from people talking about car...the OP says they want a SUV....if you want to discuss car v SUV maybe start your own thread

    That’s a crossover not a SUV

buy a Kona or eNiro ev and save a fortune on fuel ..

According to the ESB calculator, if you travel 50,800km a year, the charging will cost you about €535 in added electricity costs.

Sorry for living. You might know best,
What have you suggested or about to suggest?
The only thing I see you doing is dissing other members posts.

So is every vehicle so far.
Also pretty sure the OP wants a crossover not a big lump of a 4x4

    OP
VW had the Tiguan r line with leather at low 40s in jan

I'd only consider AWD options if getting a large SUV, crossover, stilted car whatever.
AWD makes these yokes feel much more planted.
If buying new 40k doesn't go too far IMO given your criteria.

Sorry just pointing out its not a SUV.....

I asked the question 5 or 7 seats...a lot depends on this answer

The 40k price limit will be hard especially if auto.....

Indeed, 40k is well specced Passat money.

VW Tiguan Highline DSG is just over the 40k mark:

    https://www.carsireland.ie/detail.php?ad_id=2076434&r=s.php%3Fm%5B%5D%3D93%26o%5B%5D%3D1299%26f%3D2%26t%3D2%26yn%3D2020%26yx%3D2020%26pp%3D50%26g%3D0

Hard to find a Tiguan with leather seats though. The Tiguan is getting a facelift later this summer so there might be extra dealer incentives trade in discounts to shift existing stock once they open again. VW usually offer the best finance deals too if you are availing of that.

    Thanks everyone.

So far I am interested in:
    Skoda Kodiaq (5 seater version)
    &
    VW Tiguan.

Seat Ateca is good but I don't like Seat cars (It's just a personal preference and no disrespect to anyone who owns them).

Volvo XC40 looks small and above the budget.

If you are looking at the Kodiaq, then look at the Tiguan allspace.
Or if tiguan size is enough, then look at the Skoda Karoq.

Consider Skoda Karoq as well if considering Tiguan. The Sportline model looks great.

Ateca is a size below as is the Tiguan.

Seat Tarraco and VWTiguan Allspace are the comparators for the Kodiaq. Tarraco is built in Germany on sale line as Tiguan.

I would rate the Seat above the Kodiaq

But you are talking different sizes. The Kodiaq is equivalent of Tiguan Allspace and Seat Tarraco

The Tiguan is smaller as it’s just 5 seat version....

Have you looked at Audi as they are the premium of the VW brands

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 18,958 ✭✭✭✭Shefwedfan

For the VW brands you all have equivalent models but in terms of refinement and interior quality you are looking at
    1. Audi
    2. VW
    3. seat
    4. Skoda

Test all of them is best way, one after another starting with Skoda and work your way up, all have dealer on m50 so start at Ballymount and work up, if in Dublin of course and after lockdown

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 18,958 ✭✭✭✭Shefwedfan

Finally to keep a few quid in pocket, you could go with Nissan XTrail which you will get a high spec, leather and auto should be in range for under 40k so best value for money

The Xtrail would be equivalent of Kodiaq so bigger than Tiguan etc....

Other option would be Toyota Rav but it’s hybrid and base is 40k or used to be

    Modern means what?

The CX5 is a lovely car and I nearly bought one years ago but the Diesel engine is dodgy as hell

Plenty of other crossovers knocking around to not risk it

It means anything they made themselves in the last 15 to 18 years.

Here is some light reading for you:
    https://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=2058037315

Plenty of other horror stories out there too. Buy a petrol one no problem but your paying your money and taking your chance with a Mazda diesel.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 18,958 ✭✭✭✭Shefwedfan

Back to OP, the outside choice would be a LAN Rover Discovery Sport, to get the auto you would need to up the budget but they are beautiful

Of course if going second hand then I would really be looking at Land Rover, BMW or Audi....real luxury while doing ghat mileage

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,915 ✭✭✭masterboy123

Audi Q5 is way above the budget, as I am looking for a new car. Had few used cars in the past and prefer to try out a brand new car this time.

In terms of finances, what brands are offering 2% or even a lower APR?

In terms of seating level, would Karoq be like sitting in a saloon car? I prefer if the seating position is like that of sitting on a chair and no pressure on the belly :D

And of course we will have to try it out in the dealership.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 18,958 ✭✭✭✭Shefwedfan

The ass has fallen out of market

Once the lockdown is back they will be offering all sorts to shift new cars

Would test drive all and see which one you prefer, personally I could sit in a Skoda for any distance let alone get into it every day....
