Should people be encouraged to put on their seat belt?

This coronavirus is giving some great insights into psychology and I think it raises the question about the wearing of seatbelts - should they be mandatory or even advised?

Wearing a seatbelt is unlikely to be helpful and may give a false sense of security, the chances of it helping are small. People are much better off taking more care on the road and not bothering with the seat belts. It gives a false sense of safety and makes people complacent.

Of course ambulance or garda car drivers are in more danger and know the proper use of a seatbelt so they should wear them.

Are you actually serious? 28% of drivers & passengers who died on the roads in 2018 were not wearing a seatbelt. Lots of idiots have losts their lives because they didnt put it on, it is classic Darwinism.

Also Im not sure what this has to do with the coronavirus

Have you any evidence for any of this?

Actually, I should put your entire post in bold and ask you to support it. It makes no sense at all.

Think about it a little more.

There is no evidence that putting on a seatbelt will help a driver or passenger in every day public life.

It is much more important that a user behave well on the road and cross their fingers that others will do the same.

It is highly unlikely that wearing a seatbelt will help to avoid injury when you go for a drive.

Wearing seatbelts will give a false sense of security and cause people to be more careless on the roads.

    Get it?

Can you define 'proper use of a seatbelt '
You do know emergency services are actually exempt from wearing a seat belts under the road traffic acts, it is best practice to wear one.

why not replace steering wheel airbags with 20 cm metal spikes that stop 5 cm from your face.... and that will make your drive safer? is that the angle you are going for here?

I've always maintained a big fecking spike protruding from the steering wheel boss was all we ever needed.

    (ha beaten to it!)

Just wear your seatbelt OP, it's really not that difficult...

Less people's brains will need to be scooped off the road every year by paramedics. (Not that your brain was particularly noteworthy in the first place, if you couldn't see the value of a seatbelt :P)

My mate was in an accident and the seat belt saved his life. So in your opinion it's safer to let your face smash off the dashboard and windscreen in the event of an accident. This has to be up there with the stupidest threads ever started on boards..

I think it might be about masks and why we should be wearing them outdoors?

Is this some sort of satirical post based on the advice about masks or something?

    Mask/seatbelt analogy is weak.

A big reason I am here posting this afternoon, is because of seatbelts. On more than one occasion.

If they are of limited benefit, why do racing drivers wear them, when they have a helmet and rollcage to protect them?

Seatbelts save lives and maybe so do masks.
