There was a bit at the end where they surfaced some footage of Joe Exotic back in the early days talking about sheltering the animals, and it made the link to the money and how he lost all care for the animals over time. It gave him quite a sad twist to his story I felt, though he is clearly a narcissistic user of others.

That being said, I reckon the idea that he was set up on the murder for hire charge has a lot to it. But the animal cruelty stuff is probably quite true.

Most everyone else of the "owner" set are scumbags and most of the staff came across as fruit loops but generally victims themselves. And I don't think anyone was smart enough to portray themselves as anything other than what they were. There was far too much discernable air quoting going on when they were talking about certain things, eg "apparently" I was too chicken and so on.

Mad story from start to finish.

And it's pretty sad that the animals are almost the postscript to the human madness. God love the poor things.

I think so too. Logically, his operation was unsustainable. We saw how he was cutting feeding costs for the big cats who had aged out of their cute phase. They all needed to be sustained. And more and more cats would need to be conceived in order to produce cute moneymakers to bring in the cash. But then they grew up too, requiring more cubs to bring in money. It was a vicious cycle.

Oh and I've said it before and I'll say it again: fuck Jeff Lowe. The cub in a briefcase?

Worth watching. Don’t think it’s the be all and end all, though.

Yes, Joe's 'zoo' was an absolute circus and obviously not sustainable. It grew out of control, literally.

All of the 'owner' characters in this series are predatory, just in different guises, trying to make fast money and a bit of limelight. However, at what cost to the animals and the staff too? The entire Alligator Arson Attack... :(

As I said previously, all of this is farcical and tit for tat without any real care for the animals. Carole included.

Not great either when one views the famous 'Shaq' buying 'another 3 cubs' off Joe to add to his collection. I'm rich so I'll buy WTF I want, but when these cubs grow WTF will I do? Throw them back to some other 'Zoo' perhaps.

Amongst all the 'freak show' and the comedic effects (of which there are plenty) the harsh reality remains that there's only approximately 4,000 Tigers in their natural habitat :(

Suffice to say, the entire thing is completely nuts.

Could pick at this series all day really. Both the comedy and the tragedy.

    'Mad World'

I’d say yes because it’s only seven episodes so not a big commitment.

Just finished this last night and loved it. Seems like every five minutes of watching another piece of information is shown and you're just constantly going WTF? Crazy, crazy story and an excellent insight into redneck America.

During Trump's Covid-19 press conference tonight he was asked..
Trump was asked whether he’d pardon Joe Exotic, of Tiger King.

“ What did he do?” Trump asked. “Are you recommending a pardon?”

Episode 5 when he accused people of putting cologne on his shoes to make the tiger attack him then the cctv of the suicide was the biggest rollercoaster of an episode of television you'll ever see.

Carol was a piece of work, trying to put across a holier than thou persona. Not sure the accusations are true but she was probably more unlikeable than most of the other characters.

But not as bad. She wasn’t using big cats and drugs to sexually exploit young people. The show builds a false equivalence there. She’s accused of something nefarious to do with her husband’s disappearance but there was no evidence to back it up.

The worst character in the show is Carole Baskin's husband, the one that has not disappeared.
    This summed him up.

Have a feeling she's beating the daylights out of him behind close doors. Seems a bit dead inside like the characters in Get Out.

There's a new episode up on Netflix. It's some fella catching up with a few of the people now that they are famous.

Gigs '24 - Ben Ottewell and Ian Ball (Gomez), The Jesus & Mary Chain, The Smashing Pumpkins/Weezer, Pearl Jam, Green Day, Stendhal Festival, Forest Fest, Electric Picnic, Ride, PJ Harvey, Pixies, Public Service Broadcasting, Therapy?, IDLES(x2)

I think Joe is a far more sinister character than they showed in the series-as bad as that was, the producers still needed their main protagonist to be on the acceptable side for viewers. Four straight teen runaway meth-head husbands? There has to be some seriously dodgy sh1t accompanying that in the background.

Yeah it's not too bad. Just him interviewing a from the show. Pretty lighthearted stuff.

No, instead she exploits poorly educated people by manipulating them into free labour via some ridiculous t-shirt system where they can earn upgrades depending on how much they “volunteer”.

She is like a champagne socialist politician - preaches something but her actions show the opposite. She is exploiting the animals and people as much as possible.

I’d love to see stats on how many of her “rescued” animals make it back to the wild or anywhere near it.

Agreed. Pointless interviews with some of the heads from the show.

I went down a bit of a rabbit hole last night and watched the Rick Kirkham self-made documentary "TV Junkie". It's every bit as depraved as Tiger King TBH.

Obviously there's that clip in one of the early episodes of Tiger King where Bill O'Reilly introduces him as a reporter in some earlier gig which piqued my interested. He's also made to come across as something of the voice of reason in Tiger King but to me he had a sort of Hunter S. Thompson vibe off him which I needed to investigate further :pac:

It's 90 minutes long, not particularly well shot, and not an easy watch so be warned!!! But if you're looking for some tangential information on one of the ancillary characters it's definitely interesting, particularly as an in your face study of addiction. Makes me wonder did he relapse again during his breakdown after all the Joe Exotic footage got burned in the fire.

I watched all of Tiger King but lost interest around the middle. I think it is badly made to be honest. The interviews are edited to extend and somewhat confuse. There are a lot of stupid people in this series which tends to get nauseating. I would not recommend it really.

I thought the whole meth angle was more or less brushed over by the show as a kind of side detail. It was obvious he was using it to get the young lads addicted and dependent on him.

It worked for me as it’s a topic that if someone were to explain it to me I’d dismiss it as it doesn’t sound interesting, but when you watch it does grab your attention.
I think it’s a good documentary but not as amazing as it’s made out to be. The success seems to be a combination of everyone needing something to watch and everything being the best or worse ever in the age of 140 characters.

If you haven't watched it yet then you really didn't miss anything. I found the presenter was really trying too hard to come across as likeable and funny, to a point that it became a bit cringe. The interviews were pretty pointless themselves, just standard "What did you think of the show and how were you portrayed?". Really felt like they were flogging a dead horse and the presenter was trying to get his name attached to the hype. Was on my phone hardly paying attention after the first 2-3 interviews.

What I meant was that if there are four of these young men who made it that far (there was another similar marriage prior to the show) there's bound to be a whole litany of unsavoury situations that we have yet to hear about. That many lunatics, who just do whatever they want, with that amount of drugs, guns and money, all in one place for almost 20 years? It would not surprise me if missing persons cases start being linked to the whole scene down there...
