No eggs available anywhere

I'm in the north-east and haven't been able to buy eggs anywhere for over a week now.

Is this the start of the breakdown of the supply chain, or is it because of the bird-flu out break in Monaghan?

I have my own hens so am tipping along nicely but they are only starting to come into full lay now so was trying to buy some to supplement my own stocks.

What about that fella on the monaghan Road outside ballybay. Hes an advert in the middle of a field about selling eggs, maybe he closed to this week.

No eggs in the 2 shops (Lidl and SuperValu) I went to yesterday. That’s in north Dublin.

I presume it is because of the panic stockpiling that occurred and as eggs are a fresh to market product that supply is matched to a regular demand. You cant expect the hens to lay more eggs just because people go on a home baking spree!

We need to set up a system of 'cluck and collect'.

My local Tesco had the entire egg shelves empty earlier this week, was thinking it was odd because there had been no panic buying to the same degree as everything else. Must have been entire supply suspected as being contaminated.

Found 14 the other day that a couple of our hens had been laying in a secret hideout, it was like winning the lottery.

There's one gone into the mix there now for the chocolate salted caramel cookies that will be ready in 4 minutes.

We've a world of eggs here. The hens are laying well. Two Turkey hens and a goose or 2 are laying too.
A few neighbours come and buy them off us normally from an honesty box but it certainly has slowed down lately.
I suppose people aren't stirring out as much.

Where in North East? I was in Dunnes Drogheda Southgate on Thursday night and picked up a dozen. Plenty on shelves there. Or a few people about got eggs in the vending machine at Hoeys farm up the Ballymakenny road.

Clonakilty sausages 227g is another I have noticed.

Another week or 2 and everything that is indigenous, beef, poultry, eggs, cheese, bread etc. will normalise.

Yes. This is a wet mix,and I think it should be renamed the Easiest Brown Bread in all the land. (600 ml including the egg is enough fluid, 3/4 litres of buttermilk is way too much)

The Best Brown Bread in All the Land
It wasn’t all about the agriculture at September’s ploughing championships. Tucked away in the Aldi tent, the National Ploughing Championships ran their brown bread baking competition in association with the ICA, and a group of women battled it out for the coveted title of the best brown bread maker in the land.

The overall winner was Betty Williams from Clonmel and Edel Coffey joined Sean to discuss having been down to Clonmel last week to get Betty’s secrets to making quality brown bread.

    BETTY’S AWARD-WINNING BROWN BREAD RECIPE

    6 ozs white flour

    10 ozs brown flour

    ½ tsp salt

    1 tsp bread soda

2 ozs bran flakes crushed with a rolling pin

    2 ozs porridge oats

2 ozs ‘Harvest Morn’ Golden Linseed Crunch with milled sunflower and pumpkin seeds and a touch of honey (available from Aldi)

    1 egg

    Approx ¾ litre of buttermilk

Sesame seeds to sprinkle on top before placing bread in oven

Cook at 200 degrees in a fan oven for 30 minutes then reduce heat to 170 degrees and cook for another 30 minutes.

Do you breed geese for christmas dinner? Any trouble finding customers for them?

Probably taste gorgeous but seems like a lot of work.

My better half just scoop out flour with a cup and tips in the rest by eye. She can make a brown or white soda in a few minutes minutes plus cooking.
Flour, wheaten meal (for the brown) salt, bread soda and buttermilk.

Her bread is always great, and she's been making it that way for the last 40 years.

Betty Williams' recipe was like a gift for those of us around here who are a disaster at bread making.

Yeah, just a small few . We killed 6 this year. And sold a few for breeding.
Easy enough sell a small few . But that's it , I'm done killing them. They're too likeable, and too much work plucking them.
If we breed any this year it'll be for pets or breeding.
Might sell a few eggs for hatching ( they're PB Pomeranian geese) and eat the rest!

We used to have 8/9 to sell every year but when Aldi and Lidl started selling them dirt cheap we couldn't give them away.

There has been an outbreak of bird flu (non notifiable) in the main egg producing company in CO Monaghan and a large number of hens have been slaughtered as a precaution leading to the scarcity nationwide.

Here's a good tip for anyone who can't get hold of buttermilk.

Pour out the same amount of full fat milk, add two large tablespoons of whole, plain yoghurt. Stir in until dissolved in the milk.

Use in the bread mix immediately. Works a treat.

An acid works fine too - lemon juice or vinegar.

Tonnes of eggs in Tesco Liffey Valley yesterday, but I'd used up the last of my flour and yeast at home, assuming it would be easy enough to get my hands on more. There were 2 bags of wholemeal flour left and no yeast at all. I was lucky enough to spot a rogue 2kg tub of odlums on the wrong shelf.

I'd say baking's going to see a huge resurgence now that people are staying in.

Nice one, have gallons of white vinegar here that we use for cleaning.

Yeah, I read somewhere this morning that Ireland is currently short of 1.5 million eggs a day to supply demand.

We couldn't survive without eggs in our house, perish the thought.

I have 2 here and not enough to keep 2 houses going.
The rooster crows if he is not let out early enough so he tells me if the mother is up or not.

It is bad news for those affected farms with avian flu.
Anyone here know anything about this industry.

That's cheap for local free range eggs. Generally €2.50 here and one or two farms would be €3.

Local young lad has 40 free range hens, sells from an "honesty box" at the gate.
Great eggs at €1.40 /half dozen.
Shops here in Cavan have no scarcity that I've noticed.
