in the event of a lockdown anyone nervous about tending to out farms?...think it might become more of a problem

I have to feed every day in a shed on an outfarm about 5km from homeplace ...and drop of bales in a field with a winter forage crop once a week etc

its on my own so little risk of catching or transmission, presumably there will be no issue with that type of movement?

its not like I can let them starve after all

Can’t see this being an issue. People will continue to commute to work regardless. If you aren’t in contact with anyone it’s no problem.

I've no connection with farming but I can't see how you will have problems. The government wants the likes of yourself to continue if you aren't a risk. Even in a total lock down they will want supermarkets to open.

Will the coop shops stay open? I'm wondering if we follow other countries that the only things open are supermarkets and pharmacies, would the coop shops be deemed necessary to stay open

AI man rang today and said when he calls to the farmyard then we are not to be there, basically stay out of his way when we see him coming

IWT think hardware stores would operate more of a phone and collect system, same as our vets are using. Ring ahead and staff member brings out the order to you.

I assume he'll ring ahead and expect the cow to be in the crush gate when he arrives?

Im supposed to be in work Wednesday morning myself working in a parkland trimming trees laying the last of a hawthorn hedge and weeding paths with a hoe and splitting and dividing herbaceous borders and edging in walled gardens etc, keeping the place maintained while its shut, myself and a few more lads.

I think we'll be ok going to work, we're doing no harm to anyone once we're responsible, use our own tools, wheel barrows etc

We would always ring him to tell him we have cow(s) for service,so we would have them in the crush when he arrives so will have the same arrangement

One of our local stores has already started that.
Order online or by phone and they will deliver.

I'd say it will carry on as normal unless the farm or vet has symptoms, then it will be postponed.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 21,810 ✭✭✭✭Water John

Should be testing in a few weeks also. Don't mind if it's postponed as I won't be selling.
Vet could man the crush, usually does anyway and you simply load. Keep the social distance. Have weanlings to be squeezed, could be trickier.

Assuming what prompted OP to start thread was the 11 o’clock rumor.... be careful where you get your information.

My own family heard them same btw and we’re convinced too.

    11 came and went today

No it wasn't that whatsapp thing....just saw it as a possibility, would be a potential development if health service looks like it may become overwhelmed, happening to an extent in other countries etc etc...knew Id have to get to them to feed them regardless anyway just wondering what others were thinking.

You would assume that any normal activity on a farm be it testing, AI, inspections etc would be at the lowest rung of the ladder in terms of community spreading.
In contrast to shopping, pharmacy visits, working in offices using public transport most of which are still continuing even in the most affected countries.

How bad is it looking over there lads? Few on tour left to get home to Europe before the borders close potentially, however were caught between the thoughts of being trapped here with very few cases of Covid here so far.

It's looking pretty bad. Most European governments have been fast asleep for the last three months and are panicking now. If I was in Australia i'd be staying there unless i had a very good reason for coming back.

Over 50 positive cases today and will be rising more in the days ahead as testing increases. It's not going to be pleasant here for the next month but I reckon it wont be pleasant anywhere once cases rise.

I would sit tight if I were you. A few weeks ago eldest was going to book a flight to come home in the Summer and I advised him against it. God forbid any of us catch it but from what I understand Australia has an excellent health service.

Tis New Zealand im in now as a tourist. Biggest issue we have us that we dont have work rights however it says cases will be reviewed on a case by case basis with immigration in light of the current situation. Irish Consulate were of little assistance when contacted, reaponse was contact Ireland if that fails contact New Zealand.

I’d come home.At least you would know where you stand. Flights are dirt cheap too. Plenty work here. Virus or no virus

Balance the risk of travelling to the risk of what will happen if you get sick out there.my understanding is you should be back y next Thursday. Obviously if you do travel you will have to isolate for 2 weeks after

From a health point of view the travelling is the part where you are most likely to contact it. If you do travel you wouldn't want to go home either it would have to be isolation from family as well to prevent parents etc from being in more risk

Dunno about plenty of work here anymore, there's 150k let go in the last week n there's more to come.
I reckon construction is gone for the foreseeable.
Plenty of farmwork back here though.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 21,810 ✭✭✭✭Water John

To Dubai and Dublin would be the most direct route. Hard call, NZ have basically closed incoming except Pacific Islands and have very few cases. They may be able to prevent spread.

Thanks for the replies. The airlines havent changed anything as of yet and the borders are still open but a lot could change in 12 days so ill probably head back if its allowed then.
Ill have to isolate for 2 weeks regardless and ive gad friends say they wouldnt visit me for a month after arrival and i have family i cant visit when im back its looking like im moving into the old house on the farm to really isolate myself from everyone.
In relation to work would farmers not be inclined to have a mark against me as ive been " out foreign with all them diseases" for the last few years? Id understand as most farms have young kids and elderly parents floating around but i reckon id have absolutely no claim to the temporary unemployment package being set up and i would crack up without being out working any longer than the two weeks.

I'm not sure now but I thought Ireland was shutting down the border from tomorrow onwards, that might only apply to foreigners though, or I could have it completely arseways, I'd imagine you could get plenty of work relief milking, always somebody looking for it around here.

I think the wonder is, would there be flights in 2 weeks? Just not enough passengers to make flying viable.
Once you have isolated for 14 days, nobody would have an issue with employing you.

The existence of a new virus cluster was only first properly reported on 31st December within China itself. They all could have acted a bit sooner, even if only a day or two, but not three months.

I think it's more like it has finally sunk home with you the seriousness of the situation - now that you are impacted yourself - but anyway welcome to the Carona party

Best think you can do if you have no savings (which most travellers wont) is go back to OZ, work on a farm there for the next 3-6 months and let this thing settle down here. Or else find some way of working in NZ for a few months

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,471 ✭✭✭Panch18

Maybe i misread the article but it says that EU nationals are exempt, last time i checked i was an EU national.

so this is either 1 of 2 things

    1) it's a superficial thing from the EU to be seen to be doing something. The virus doesn't care if you are EU citizen or not so - so it makes no sense to let some people in and others not based on a passport

    2) the EU is serious about this (where the hell have they been for the last 2 months is a very big question that needs to be asked once this is over) - in which case this is the first step in a range of measures and eventually the border will be closed to everybody

Lucky for you its probably 1)

I have the option of returning to oz for a year if wanted but the plan was to save that for a later date. Im not really impacted at all yet really im still on my holidays at the minute and will be for the next two weeks. I was really only looking for information on whats going on at home as its hard to find reliable sources between all the various social media platforms at the minute.
