It was him, but he changed to 3:7 in the nineties.

I think it was John 3:16 initially back in the 80's. I don't know if it was the same guy. Met him a few times he was a nice fella. Posed for a photo obligingly. Enjoyed the banter, etc. RIP

I read an article which said he changed from 3:16 to 3:7 after a Michael Jackson concert.
No reasons given as to why - would love to know if there was a specific reason for it.

    That’s bad.

Met him a few times years ago. Probably thought I was satanic since I told him I practice transcendental meditation.

The verse of 3:16 was too long to explain to people when they asked what the number stood for. He felt 3:7 verse was shorter and easier to say to people.

Think the sign was stolen before. Turned up in Naas.

    Seemed like an alright lad.

    RIP

Born a Tipp man, John lived in Castletroy for most of his life.
He loved limerick hurling and was disappointed to miss Limerick's All-Ireland win in 2018 due to ill health.
    Limerick scored 3-16 that day..!!!
    Coincidence...:P

    P.S. was a true gentleman.

Hadn't seen that sign up at any matches for a few years. Used to always think he was a bit of a relegious freak alright. What was his reasoning behind the sign

You could take the hint by looking it up in the Bible.

I'm not into fiction but might look it up. Must be a GAA reference in the bible is my guess

Correct. It is the parable of the prodigal corner-forward guy who came back from the States towards the back end of the championship and walked straight back on to the first fifteen.

Sorry to hear of his passing.
But will someone explain to me how anybody is allowed to bring religious banners into a game?

These all have no place inside our stadia.

    Here's the verse in question:

Do not marvel that I said to you, 'You must be born again.'

The man would have seen the great Jimmy Barry-Murphy play, I'm sure he's well used to being taken to a higher level of consciousness.

I remember reading that some GAA fans (waterford I think) took his sign off him on a train one time and threw it out the window,

Not a nice thing to do!

The world is made better by a few eccentric people.

On Joans road on the way to a match one time I saw a Dublin supporter wrapped in a cloak of the Dublin colors, Viking horned helmet on his head and playing the bodhran and singing as he walked along.

Give Joe Duffy a call now...;)
He needs a break from the Corona headbangers, they're all out in force today.

Sounds like something John "I loves me county" Mullane would do
