I'm looking for advice. A gran uncle of mine has offered me his farm and smallholding(15 acres) for a decent price. He himself is moving in with my cousin but hasn't done alot with the land for a while. Its in need of some drainage ditches and one or two fields are rather steep.

I have limited experience in farming(a bit of relief milking and time spent at baling time) that's all.

I have a very good job which I will stay in but have recently got married so need somewhere to live and this spot seems a lovely place to raise a family.

I wondering if anybody has any advice as to best to utilize the land, I don't need to make a living from it but would love the land to contribute to its costs. :o

We have something similar. 14 acres with 3 of it planted. First thing I'd say is that if you are working full time then you can more or less forget about it contributing anything monetary wise to the family.

I have found though that what it has given our family non monetary wise is priceless. We have ponies, donkeys, goats, pigs and hens and are getting a few ewes and cows later in the spring. The kids absolutely love it and it gives them an education that you won't get anywhere else. It is also a fantastic way of just getting out and clearing the head for yourself and, once it's not going to cost you a fortune, I'd say go for it.

There is obviously ways of getting some bit of an income from it but, in my experience, it won't be significant as you'd be surprised with all the small little costs that go with it too.
