Which response do you give to "how are you?"

It seems people's responses dare always one of these two:
    • "I'm good, thanks"
    • "I'm good, and yourself?"
I generally find that I say the former. It seems more polite or something. Sometimes (and rarely) the other response can seem as if the person wants to dominate the interaction.

In even more extreme cases, I notice that if a person considers themselves of particularly higher status, they'll nearly always answer "how are you?" with "how are you?". That's if I ask i ask the question first. However if the higher status person asks "how are you?" first, and if you then respond with "good and yourself", that you won't get an answer to this... the higher status person will ignore the and yourself and move onto the next thing they want to ask. Whereas with me, I would hold the thought on what I want to say next in order to answer the "and yourself"

I recently saw a guy who came into to work with a cast on his arm. I said "how are you?". He immediately responded with "Good, how are you keeping?". It was a funny response seeing as all appeared the same with me and there was clearly no news I'd have. Some people seem to hate saying the word "thanks".

You want to complain! Look at these shoes. I've only had them three weeks and the heels are worn right through. If you complain nothing happens, you might as well not bother. Oh my back hurts, it's not a very fine day and I'm sick and tired of this office. <SLAM>

That would be the same as the latter option.

In Dublin, it is either grand thanks, or great thanks

You could be on your death bed and it would still be the same reply

Brendan Behan once replied to such a question along the lines of "Mighty! In fact, if I was any better I couldn't stick it." :D

    It depends.

    Nosey and smug people:
"I'm really great thanks. Just back home from Dublin for a few days. How are you keeping".

    My aunt:
"Ah sure I'm grand. Kept going".

    Colleagues and acquaintances:
"I'm good thanks. How are you"?

    Close people:
"Yeah I'm ok. A bit tired. Sometimes I get overwhelmed and the commute is a fùcker but sure lookit. Im doing good overall. Now tell me. How you are"?

    My dad:
"Arrah sure grand. How is your knee? How was mammy today"?

'Why you asking? You don't really care.
Look at me when I'm talking to you.
Is your room tidy, got your homework done?
Go out and get a bucket of coal!'

    All in one breath.

Is this the right room for an argument?

I was always a 'how are you' type but most responses to that was 'good'.Never asked how I was, so now I just say Hello!

The response to any greeting is "Well.."

"Well.." is both the best way to both start and respond to any conversation initiation..

    "Mind your own Business!!!"
Strangely I don't have many friends
Anyone shed any light on that?

    How am I?
"I hate my life and I don't care if I live or die"
    That usually shuts them up.

It depends on the person. Some people like telling you about their weekend etc. Some don't. After a while i get to know their rhythms.

    Like most Irish people, "grand".

Just say “grand” and cease eye contact. Ask no question in return and leave no room for a follow-up from them.

Don't understand these answers, though they're widespread these days.

I usually answer "I'm well, thank you. And yourself?"

Well, actually, my back is stiff, my calves are cramping and I've a bad headache...

I think about life and I think about death and neither one particularly appeals to me.

    Alright!?

It's both answering the question and responding at the same time, minimal fuss and they know you don't really care.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,469 ✭✭✭ibFoxer

I usually say "if I was any better, I'd be going to the doctor to find out why I'm so good" but I'm an awful pr!ck and it's the way I say it you see.
