Did this happen? Not a mention of it since. If they was Small there would be calls for him to be arrested ( again )

I don't know Strumms, there have been some cracking league games over the past few years even in really poor weather. The teams would be more evenly matched and we shouldn't be getting the huge scoring differentials that has plagued the championship for a while now.

The super 8's weren't exactly a success, based on a league format with supposedly the top 8 teams, wouldn't like to see them return. The league is different, teams often experiment with team selection and not always really bothered about the results, which can lead to better matches.

Main concern for me for next season is the management really poor this year all through and now they have to unearth a few new players that are up to standard and have to cut lads this year who were on the panel for a couple of years who never had any real impact when called upon .

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 14,640 ✭✭✭✭JRant

The super 8's was the usual half baked effort we see from HQ though. It doesn't address the problem of div 3/4 teams getting hockeyed by 20+ points. The gap is too big now for an untiered format. Imagine Limerick against Kerry or Westmeath in the hurling. That's what we are currently doing and it's daft.

The line definitely need to up their game and get a bit smarter. However, I'm not in the "we need new players" camp. Sure, bedding in some players every year makes sense. What Dessie needs now is consistency as we still have a team capable of winning an AI. There's been a lot of players walking away from the panel and the Cluxton nonsense helped nobody.

Also if Mannion and McCaffrey can be persuaded to commit it will be a big boost

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 14,640 ✭✭✭✭JRant

That would be massive alright. Maybe a fresh start and none of the COVID nonsense might tempt them back.

I'd also say Dessie needs to strip it back a bit and get back to some basics. I still don't know why he tried to change so much when he's had very little time with the team. Keep it simple Dessie.

Is there any prospects of the two lads returning though ? Don't mean a whole lot of new guys but feel we have to improve are bench options at least we were very weak this year and injuries are now a factor more so than a couple of years ago .Will be hard cause under age teams were below par in general .We need to get back to a more forward thinking game he must know that after the Mayo defeat .

But our bench didn't cost us the semi. It was terrible tactics. Mayo were there to be put away and instead we played super negative football. We had the one player capable of running at the Mayo defense picking up the ball inside his own 45 time and time again. Howard should have been pushed up and McCarthy or Bugler brought into midfield.

McCaffrey won't be back with work commitments. I don't think he enjoyed inter county the last couple years going by a interview this year. Mannion should be back

    .

Bench comment was more general in that a couple of more senior players have a lot of miles now so we need to try and blood the best we have .Not a huge fan of Dessie but want him to succeed obviously as don't want a raft of managers coming in every two years or so .I know he has won Sam already but kind of think he got the breaks a bit so the season just over would concern me a bit but hopefully he proves me well wrong.

The group in 2019 that won 5 in a row was aging squad. 14 of that panel no longer involved. The break in league last year and short league this year made it more difficult for new lads to break through. Next year league should be just about bringing young lads through. Kieran Kennedy, Lee Gannon, James Doran and Mark Lavin need to be looked at . Cameron McCormack (Ballymun) and Donal Ryan (Na Fianna) impressed in club championship on Friday could get run too. Cormac Howley from Round Towers Lusk should be brought onto panel.

Completely agree Geal. That's why I think he'll go back to a more simplified game plan and bring some of those lads in for a look during the league. Let's not forget the Basquels looked daycent and our defense was still bloody good.

Colm Basquel is good though don't think his brother Ryan up to standard. Ditto Aaron Byrne and Conor McHugh. All 3 are great club players.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 14,640 ✭✭✭✭JRant

I think there's a bit more to Ryan but needs a bit more league action for me to get up to speed. I'm not sold on the other two lads but when you look at how poor we were this year it's hard to get a read on players.

Ryan is very one sided. Got a couple runs under Jim too and never impressed.

I didn't get a chance to see any of the games this week unfortunately. I like the cut of Gannon and Lavin. They also have more opportunities now with the panel a bit lighter.

I can't blame Sam. Must be fed up with restrictions and wanted to get a gig or two in before the year was out.

Jayus I don’t know was the defence that good? When Meath ran at Dublin they created havoc. I think the only time/one of the few times a Kildare fella (Daniel Flynn) ran at the Dublin defence it resulted in a goal. Plus there was all that messing at the end of the Mayo match. Didn’t scream ‘good defence’. Plenty for Dessie to ponder I think.

Guff about stuff, and stuff about guff.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 14,640 ✭✭✭✭JRant

That's true but I wouldn't put the blame all on the defense for those incidents. Plus, we kept both teams to lowish scorelines, particularly Mayo.

Of course since Cork is an independent republic

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,888 ✭✭✭muddle84

I was referring to the fact that neither Ireland or the UK were in the EU until 1973 but your point stands!! I don't think Cork joined the EU until 2 years later in 1975

DubsTV are doing a fantastic job with the coverage IMO. Really lucky to have it.

Plus it might be just me, but is Osin Langan a way better commentator than the guff we have to put up with from Marty Morrissey and Ger Canning on RTE?

Ok, the camera work from Dubs TV might not be fancy. But I find having the camera view at that wide angle it is like you are at the games. am looking forwards to this one coming up - Na Fianna v Raheny

Raheny have been woeful this second half. Really poor showing from them. NF haven’t even been that good really.

It was a funny sort of game. Raheny could have got three goals, but got none in the first half.

It is forward Raheny seem to lack all the time. Then amount of times Fenton was waiting for lads to move for him, but no one did. Maybe they could move Howard into the forwards or something.

Going into the game for Na Fianna I expected McHugh and Aaron Byrne to be the danger men. But McHugh did not even start. And Byrne was more doing donkey work and getting frees until he came good in the second half with consecutive points. That Brian O'Leary fella looked very good for NF. I wonder would he get a few run outs for the senior Dublin team?

The Judes v Lusk game which was on at 4 was a bit of a write off. Cormac Howley definitely deserves a run out for the Dublin seniors at this stage. He really stands out for Lusk (I was at the Intermediate Final a few years ago where he was a one man show for Lusk). And even though Lusk got walloped by Judes he stood out again. Has a bit about him.

Guff about stuff, and stuff about guff.
