'Shock Poll' Sinn Fein now on 35%

Pretty unbelievable numbers coming out of the Sunday Times Behaviour and Attitudes poll in tomorrows newspaper

    Sinn Fein 35% (up 10%)
    Fianna Fail 20% (down 2%)
    Fine Gael 18% (down 3%)

I guess lots of people werent intimidated by those Sinn Fein public meetings like Leo said because they've only gone and added another 10% to their general election result. That strongly suggests there is a cohort of people out there who didnt vote for Sinn Fein in the recent election but now wish that they did and they will do so if given another opportunity.

I'd say this poll will have alarm bells going off in FF and FG headquarters tonight and from Monday we will see them both scrambling to get into government together ASAP. Because if theres another election due to both of them refusing to marry up on the basis of civil war politics then their polling numbers will go even further down the toilet.

Textbook PR spin to allow both to get into government.

Did you tell Mary Lou that?????

She told us she was trying to form a government with other left wing parties.

Are you calling her a liar???

You just said the numbers aren't there.

You or Mary Lou are obviously spoofing.

She may be trying, but please enlighten us as to where her government is coming from based on these numbers (and assuming all are willing to row in with SF):

    Sinn Féin 37
    Green Party 12
    Labour Party 6
    Social Democrats 6
    Solidarity–People Before Profit 5
    Independents 4 Change 1

    TOTAL 67

So who from the following is going to bump up her numbers to the magical 80?

    Fianna Fáil 37
    Fine Gael 35
    Aontú 1
    Independent 19
    Ceann Comhairle 1

Maybe Peadar Toibin will come back into the fold, but she'd still need a dozen independents to join in, and very few, if any of them are what you would consider left wing.

No, that's not what I said. What I actually said if you care to read my post properly is that she may well be trying, but the numbers simply aren't there for her to succeed. But if you can demonstrate otherwise from the figures above, then please do.

It has been acknowledged by members of the SF party that they can't form a government without FF or FG.

Yet here you repeating the same pathetic bs that every FG party representative has said since the election. Any original thoughts yourself?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 21,868 ✭✭✭✭dxhound2005

The Rest are down 5%, a natural expectation since SF would have picked up some of those seats if they had ran more candidates. Given the margin of error that could be 8% or 2%. They are getting the other 5% from FF and FG, and again with the margin of error that could be higher or lower.

Every way around the problematical group are the Rest who got 50 seats. If SF get 50 and they get 40 in a new election, there will still be no government formation for SF. Because if SF and the other two big parties go to the country on the basis that they cannot agree a government, then they will still not be able to agree a government, with so many of the seats going to the Rest. Especially as is certain, Labour who are part of the Rest will not join any government.

If nobody will go in with SF, then FF and FG should just get it done. SF can't get a government together.

Keep the economy ticking along as is and sort out housing and most people will be reasonably happy. No one government will sort out health but hopefully some changes can be made, add more beds etc.

Mary Lou has to be seen as trying to form a government without the FF/Fg brigade. Everyone knows it's BS and won't happen.
    Options are a SF/FF government (won't happen)
Another election (won't happen as FF/FG know this will lead to more SF seats and no easy government formation.
Or a deal with FF/FF with a few yes men (easily bought) that will last the full term. Now when this happens we will see a lot of goodies that these guys will hope will bring back some voters from SF. Maybe even a rent freeze?

FG won't sort housing, would burn down every local authority house if the could,

They had 10 years to burn them down, and they failed miserably.

Census of Population 2016 - Profile 1 Housing in Ireland

    Tenure & Rent

Changes in Rent, Home Ownership and Mortgages
Rented households approach the half million mark
Rented accommodation has continued its upward trend with 497,111 households renting, an increase of 4.7 per cent on 2011. This meant that renting was the tenure status for almost 30 per cent of all of occupied dwellings in the last census.

Renting from a local authority showed the largest increase, up 11 per cent from 129,033 in 2011 to 143,178 in 2016. The number of households which were rented either from a private landlord or voluntary body rose by 2 per cent from 320,319 in 2011 to 326,493 in 2016.

About as impressive a rise as that of the NSDAP going from 18.25% to 37.27% in 18 months on the back of anger at the fat cat bankers and exhaustion of patience with the out of touch politicians. The media will bring up their violent past, but the public will be able to look beyond these lies and deceptions for houses, fair wages, and the long awaited return of the free city of Derry.

What exactly is a, Behaviour and Attitudes pill?

Never heard of it before ?

    Three things.,

FG don’t care what happens would like to see a SF government fail and be revealed as charlatans, this removing them as a good alternative.

SF want to manipulate the vote to pretend they have more than a 1 in 4 mandate

In a second vote, the 35% that stayed at home could change the outcome significantly.
