As nominations have already been submitted (little public service announcement for you there :p)...

I really hope the following have nods...
    • Rise of the Planet of the Apes (2011)
    • Ex Machina
    • 12 Monkeys
    • Jurassic Park
    • Moon
    • Under The Skin
    • Primer
    • Short Circuit
And will be shocked and devastated if the following aren't in...
    • Interstellar
    • Inception
    • Alien
    • Aliens
    • Matrix
    • Wrath of Khan
    • Arrival
    • Terminator
    • T2
    • BTTF(x3)
    • Men In Black
It was very tough omitting all of them!

Just a quick note that due to the extra nominations received, there will be a qualifier round with 8 matches.

Each match will have THREE movies included in it. The winner will advance to the First Round Proper.

I can confirm at least 2 of them are in ;)

    Batteries not included...
Wait, we have drones now they'd be similar?

I am might not care if anything gets knocked out in this comp I might just love all of them, actually really looking forward to this one, so many absolute fantastic films in it. (well probably :D)

Don't know if Rise of the Planet of the Apes gets a nod or not, but there is definitely another of that trilogy in the mix and I debated between it and Rise for quite awhile.

    Actually...

I don't know if it's because I limited it to a little over 64 movies or not but imo this tournament appears to have the best submissions from all the tournaments I've ran.

Gonna get difficult really quickly is what I'm saying :D

Yeah, I'd narrowed it down to Rise while still trying to trim. I was blown away by that trilogy, I wasn't expecting them to be so good at all

I'm going to miss most of today's sadly - be nice to my submissions everyone!

Event Horizon I would hope is included...

    Star Wars

    Star trek

    Star wars

    (That's three votes everyone agreed)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 18,503 ✭✭✭✭Also Starring LeVar Burton

Star Trek II: Wrath Of Khan - KHAAAAAAAAANNNNN!

Cabin In The Woods - because it's great and also f**k Star Wars (overrated steaming pile of sh*te that is definitely not a Sci-Fi)

Cabin in the woods is better than Star Wars.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,063 ✭✭✭✭ShaneU

    1. Star Trek II
    2. Star Wars
    3. Ghostbusters
    4. Galaxy Quest

Star Wars not Sci-fi? LOL and you probably think Spies Like Us is clearly Sci-fi

  • Moderators, Social & Fun Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 55,409 Mod ✭✭✭✭Necro

I assume that's a vote for Cabin in the Woods then :pac:

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 18,503 ✭✭✭✭Also Starring LeVar Burton

Species - tough call, but gonna have to go with Species here.

Galaxy Quest - one of my nominees and just a fantastic film from start to finish.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,063 ✭✭✭✭ShaneU

    5 Moon - amazing movie

    6. Tough but have to go with Groundhog Day

Robocop - I was told when I was about 10 that I wasn't allowed watch this, but managed to get my hands on a VHS copy and watched it anyway. Brings back good memories.

Total Recall - As much as I adore Groundhog Day, I don't consider it a Sci-Fi, so have to give it to Total Recall on this one.

Slow moving today, which is expected on a Saturday I suppose.

I'll put up the remaining qualifiers and let them resolve anyways.

    Match 7:

    The Thing

    https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0084787/?ref_=fn_al_tt_1

    VS

    Gravity

    https://www.imdb.com/title/tt1454468/?ref_=nv_sr_srsg_3

    VS

    The Adventures of Baron Munchausen

    https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0096764/?ref_=nv_sr_srsg_0

    Match 8:

Back to the Future Part 2

    https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0096874/?ref_=nv_sr_srsg_0

    VS

    Evolution

    https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0251075/?ref_=nv_sr_srsg_6

    VS

    Serenity

    https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0379786/?ref_=nv_sr_srsg_3

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 18,503 ✭✭✭✭Also Starring LeVar Burton

The Thing - The Garage Bar in Dublin just seems to alternate between this, The Goonies, and Only Fools and Horses muted on their TV screens, which is why its one of my favourite places to stop in for a pint.

    Serenity - Firefly, baby!

You tell that to the 10 year old me as I was coming out of the cinema! :p
That was one of the two greatest cinematic experiences of my life.

    1. Star Trek II - may be a bit late.
    2. Star Wars - It is a period of civil war....
    3. Ghostbusters - iffy if it's scifi. Guess unlicenseced nuclear accelerators make it so.
    4. Star Trek VI - not a huge fan, but best
    5. Robocop. Very tough......... love Moon (Sam Rockwell is fab) but Robocop is a a stone cold classsic
    6. Total Recall (love Groundhog Day but not IMO SciFi)
    7. The Thing (love Munchausen but more fantasy than scifi. Though may have beenscifi at the time (of roiginal stories))
    8. Serenity - cannot take the sky from me

    3. Ghostbusters
    4. Galaxy Quest

Maybe someday I will, using Time Travel aka. actual Science Fiction... ;)

To give Star Wars its dues, I actually really liked Rogue One. If that got a nod in here, I'd maybe waver on my "its not f**king Sci-Fi" stance.

And full disclaimer, a lot of my "hatred" for Star Wars is of the Panto Villain variety... I wouldn't be a fan like, but don't be offended by any of my assertions that its a dumpster fire of a franchise, I'm mostly just taking the pi$$... Mostly...

Back to the future 2 - love an alternate timeline

Groundhog Day - but yeah not classically a sci fi

    Current Scores:

Star Wars (5) Cabin in the woods (3) Batteries Not Included (0)
    Primer (1) Species (2) Ghostbusters (3)
Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country (2) Galaxy Quest (4) safety not guaranteed (0)
    Moon (2) Robocop (3) soldier (1998) (0)
Silent Running (0) Total recall (4) groundhog day (2)
The Thing (3) Gravity (1) The Adventures of Baron Munchausen (0)
Back to the Future Part 2 (1) Evolution (0) Serenity (5)

    Star Trek already through

Star Wars is next into Round 1 closely followed by Serenity.

Back To The Future Part 2 was a semi finalist in the Best Movie Ever tournament but can't make it out of the qualifiers in its own genre. Go figure :D

Time travel I’m guessing? Or time loop. It’s scraping the barrel but technically it fits.

I think you're getting a little bit confused, let me help.

This is fantasy, the bad guys have horses:

This is sci-fi, the bad guys have spaceships:

Just because its in Space doesn't make it Sci-Fi. And you don't need swords and horses to be a Fantasy - take Harry Potter for example.

The real problem is some people around these parts seem to think they can lump whatever they please into the Sci-Fi box. Wouldn't be surprised to see Schindler's List make an appearance at this stage, based on some of the other entries popping up.

What? Why would people do that? If I had been around for that, some heads would've rolled. Let me guess Twilight also appeared in that comp because Vampires!!!
