Drinking Water

Hi Folks,

Quick question regarding drinking water sources when wild camping!
I camp mostly near forestry in the mountains and have often wondered if I could drink water from the surrounding lakes? (after using a filter obviously, I have a Sawyer Mini)

My main concern is the runoff, does that make nearby water sources unusable?

Anyone have any experience with this?

If it's properly filtered there's no reason you couldn't drink it. What is it you think will run off into a mountain lake? If you're overly concerned you could use a steri pen but they're pricey. I'd say you'll be fine with the Sawyer.

You can buy water-purification tablets. I got some when I was visiting India. Think I got them at one of the camping shops around Capel St.

It's much better to use flowing water, so I'd look to get water from a stream flowing into a lake, rather than lake water.

It makes little difference with a sawyer, you could drink from a puddle if you were so inclined.

After going through a Sawyer.
It was fine.
Peaty water. :pac::pac:. No issues.



....then I made tea

Mistake. That was from a stagnant pool on top of a hill, I was advised to take the water from a flowing source on the approach to the hill. Makes sense alright. No probs either way. It's just a visual "put off" to some people.
