It pained me to vote against the monkees there, LeVar.

I used to love their show as a kid.

I used to love their show as a kid.

RTÉ used to repeat them in the very early '90s when I was only about 4 or so and I absolutely loved it. First album I ever bought was The Greatest Hits of the Monkees. Managed to pick up the DVD's a few years back - show is still great too.

Match 44: (I'm not your) Stepping Stone - The Monkees (one of my nominations and the best Monkees song, up against a fairly heavy hitter unfortunately)

I love The Monkees, and really happy to see this here as it's not one I'd expect. Also got to #11 in the UK charts in 1996 when covered by PJ & Duncan (aka Ant & Dec). No prizes for guessing which is the better version!

Didn't know PJ & Duncan covered it actually... Curiosity makes me want to go listen to that version... I imagine I'll regret it though... ;)

Clearly the lyrical geniuses who brought us this ;)

They absolutely butchered it, and I do indeed regret subjecting myself to that.

I used to watch it when I was a kid too and I was madly, deeply in love with Davy Jones. One day my mum caught me watching it and said "Oh I used to love that when I was young" and I was like .. wait what?!?! And she said "yeah that's a really old show. Those guys are old men now!" I was so devastated.

Match 45: Venus - Shocking Blue (it was a struggle deciding between these two, both iconic in their own ways, very tough call)

Match 46: Return to Sender - Elvis

Match 47: Good Vibrations - Beach Boys

Match 48: Come Together - The Beatles (one of my nominations and probably the most iconic Beatles track)

Match 45: Sympathy for the Devil - Rolling Stones

Match 46: I'd Rather Go Blind - Etta James

Match 47: Beyond the Sea - Bobby Darin v Good Vibrations - Beach Boys. Two of my nominations. It's like asking me to pick a favourite child. :(

Match 48: Louie, Louie - The Kingsmen. Another of my nominations, otherwise Come Together would win out over just about anything else.

I had debated whether nominating one of their better known hits instead, but had to stick with my favourite song of theirs. If I didn't have a one song per artists rule for myself, I imagine nearly all of my noms would've been Monkees songs.

I stick to the same rule. It just so happens that my favourite Monkees song is Last Train to Clarksville, so I nominated it anyway even though it's well known. I didn't want to chance it not being in the competition. I already had a couple of other songs in at the expense of better known songs that I hoped would be nominated by someone else and didn't want to push my luck.
