Is this Wifi speed possible?

    Hi,

I have Virgin Media 260MG Broadband. I get the full speed using wired connections and wifi of around 60MG usually on phone etc. So far so normal.

Now I have an IMAC in the converted attic and it is also running on wifi. However the speeds I get are like 240MG on average. Extremely fast and a speed I didn't think was possible on wifi? (I know nothing about the tech). I have tested on 6 different speed test sites and all give the same. And surfing etc is fast but guess it's hard to know. So my question is do people think these speeds are real and possible? It's just as a matter of interest really.

    Thanks

Thanks. So you think that’s realistic on wifi? Only 20MG less than the wired? I wonder why it’s so much better on the iMac.

There are multiple different WiFi technologies, including a, b, g, n and ac. All have different maximum and realistic speeds. Additionally, the quality of both the router's and the computer's components will affect the speed, as well as the medium through which the signal travels (you won't do well if you happen to have a lot of tinfoil in your walls.

If you're going to nitpick then you'd know it should be Mbps. I only used capitals because the OP did. I'm aware of the difference between Mb and MB.

Alright folks don’t get yer knickers in a twist! 😂 Thanks for the info. I didn’t realise that wifi speed so close to the wired capacity was a possibility. It seems it is!

With 240Mb internet connection then yes, decent router and device can max it out on WiFi (or wired).

At 1Gb you'd be hard pressed to max it out on WiFi without a very good router and device spec but wired you should essentially max it out with most recent router/PC combinations (allowing for overhead).

Hold Option and click the WiFi icon in the menu bar on your iMac to see an expanded menu. The PHY mode will tell you the WiFi protocol it’s using. Most likely 802.11ac if it’s a recent enough iMac.
