While I think it's a fair point that questions in a poll can be quite leading, I disagree that the housing mess up/lie/cover-up/inaccuracy wouldn't have been well known.

But, as BOC pointed out, a political support survey shows FG in particular haven't lost support. Maybe to be more exact about it, people might have known about the housing target mess, but it was at the back of their mind, or didn't particularly care about it, until asked about it specifically.

Now he's at "generation Zee" !

Was he in the States for a weekend or what.

Maybe FG support doesn't care if it is lied to, it's power at any cost, to identity or standing for something?

Maybe like poor Kingsmill Barry they "didn't see the connection"?

The 'Somebody Has Dared Criticised FG' button has been hit.

To be super generalising, FG attract homeowners, so the numbers of new homes doesn't really matter to their voters as they're already in homes.

There are homeowners, and people with homes owned by the bank until they finish paying the mortgage. And then there are the private renters. All of them look down at the other group in social housing.

    Census:

The number of dwellings owned without a mortgage or loan was up 11% to nearly 680,000. The number of homes owned outright where the head of the household was 65 years or over increased by 17% from 319,651 to 374,417. Every single county saw a rise in the number of dwellings owned outright between 2016 and 2022. The number of dwellings owned with a mortgage or loan decreased by 1% to 531,207. The largest falls in mortgaged properties were in Donegal (down 10%) and Tipperary (down 8%) where housing growth was slowest. There was an increase in the number of mortgaged properties in some counties, particularly where housing growth was strong, such as in Meath (up 9%) and Kildare (up 6%).

In April 2022, more than 330,000 homes were rented from a private landlord. This was an increase of 7% since 2016. There was a significant increase in the number households with people aged 65 and over renting from a private landlord to almost 17,000 households, up 83% since 2016. For households headed by a person aged 60 to 64 years, this was up 69%.

Sticking to the actual radio show, the discussion was about '25% of Fianna Fail' voters......

I genuinely expect the words "neither party are here to defend themselves" will be used this morning.

Is Miriam going to be in the chair?

A particularly poor show this morning

Agreed, seems like the host is not comfortable with the first hours business.

Seems very anxious to get back into ‘luvvie’ mode.

Brendan on holiday again, well it is a bank holiday after all. You can’t expect the top paid presenters in on such occasions. Dearbhail McDonald hosting (I think - based on the voice).

I missed the intro so not sure who is on the panel but I can hear Scott Lucas’s voice so he’s there - again. Lucinda mentioned - Creighton?

It's a part time job for BOC.

Not bad work if you can get it.

Did Roddy Collins give out to Brendan just there? I only caught the end and BO'C seemed a bit discombobulated.

that woman made some valid points on the modern trend of everybody having to have “a label”. It’s a bit like the old spike Milligan sketches with everyone having tags hanging off them. I’m always perplexed with adult people in 30’s ,40,s 50’s etc getting autism diagnosis and then telling everyone who will listen how this explains why they are “the way they are” and why they’ve done something a certain way.

A very interesting discussion, but she'll ultimately get nowhere on this. I thought she was making very reasonable points, but some of the responses from listeners e.g. "invalidating my lived experience" just illustrates where this whole area has shifted to.

The very humble Chris de Burgh (yes, I'm being sarcastic). Seems harmless, but he's all a bit self-absorbed.

l did notice that… how he felt that apart from his music it was his personality that exuded positivity. I don’t know him personally, so maybe it does. But l couldn’t help thinking about that film “cocoon” where the aliens exuded that “light” and positivity….😵‍💫

Imagine you've grown up with autism. But you were never diagnosed. You always just felt a little "off" or "different" to others. And now in adult life you're given an explanation behind that. Isn't that a great thing for the person? What's wrong with that?

I'm nearly 40. There were a few people I went to school with who were classed as being "weird". In retrospect it's probable they had some undiagnosed neuro diversity. If they had been diagnosed as children maybe they'd have had an easier time in school? And if they've since been diagnosed, good for them.

Nothing wrong with that - more power to them - but what if they've been caught up in this rush to pathologise and put a label on it, when this may not be an accurate diagnosis? Could ultimately do more harm than good.

I think the point that Suzanne O'Sullivan was making on the show this morning was that the testing for certain conditions (e.g. autism) is now so broad that individuals are being diagnosed as on a spectrum, when they may not be.

Some people are just weird/odd. We'll eventually go back to that.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 17,096 ✭✭✭✭elperello

I think anyone over 40 can recall people who didn't really fit in and didn't know why.

Some did ok in life others fell by the wayside.

Seeking a diagnosis is an option that should be approached with full support and advice from medical professionals.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,350 ✭✭✭ooter

I thought the comment about neuro diverse not being a medical term and it's not a counterpoint to being neuro typical was interesting, she said we're all diverse and we all can have difficulties socially.
That won't go down well with some.

everyone is different, and being different doesn’t always require a label is what she was saying.

I don't think anyone's saying otherwise. Of course seeking an assessment (which might lead to an appropriate diagnosis) should an option for everyone. Everyone should be listened to, respected and supported…but (again), I think her point is about the move/pressure towards overdiagnosis, pathologising and labelling when it may not be appropriate or accurate.

At the very least, it's open to debate…especially when you see a 787% rise in autism diagnoses over 20 years in the UK for example.
