There is issues with them. They are often used to pay the advertising company itself. It also allows strong entities to exert control on the market. There is an article in the SI on the way it works.

Say normally you get 15% payment for arranging advertising from a media company and you do 500k/month with them

Now they incentive you if you do 750k along with your 15% we will give you a discount of 5% in the form of free advertising ( 37.5k +).

Now there is two issues first the company redirects business to this company ( even though it may not be an ideal fit) and they have also maybe 40-50k in advertising slots to fill.

It can benefit larger media advertising sellers like RTE and disenfranchise small local radio stations. As well a small business with an advertising budget may be pointed towards a larger national media organisations rather than a local one

Fair enough, sharp business practice it may be. But their existence is not what has caused this particular scandal.

Look - it's terrible what happened to this lady and her husband in the Greek wildfires 5(!) years ago but why is this still news?? It's almost as if Brendan is trying to deflect or something 😉

I see she managed to get a cheeky plug for her book in. Well done, well done

Heard that piece when I was in the car and thought where's the book plug. It's an awful thing to happen to someone but I feel I know more than I need to about her !

Interesting that the discussion begins with a direct assessment of how RTÉ salaries might be capped at circa €176k. That would mean an immediate salary cut of ~30% for the presenter. 😆

No harm there, one hour airtime running a ‘debate’ ,rest one to one interviews and plugging other peoples work.

    C’mon…..250k for that.

Whats needed is the ‘accountancy ‘ culture needs to be ‘clen out’ and more transparent payment systems introduced.

Tax payer being butt reamed by this lot.

Ballsy has a 250K brass neck on him. 3+ hours a week on air, mostly following a formulaic programme that fills itself. Change the name of the show, offer him 100K max, otherwise he can hang his hat elsewhere.

And immediately says ‘we can’t go there’. Waste of space.

Notice our Brendan and his ‘panel’ of buddies doing their best to shift and soften the narrative.

The longer this goes on, the more of that we will hear, Mr.F.

Shane Coleman doing the same softening/distracting/adding vagueness /basically gaslighting in his puff piece in Business Post today.

Same this morning as O’Donnell and former RTE punters trying to shift the goalposts.

Drury not straying too far from his former roots.

The bottom line is that a nest of corruption and mismanagement and poor decision making has been uncovered.

This boil need to be lanced and trying to spin all this into a debate on ‘commercial’ and ‘public service’ chaff is

    pure deflection.

O’Donnell scrambling to try to stop Jim Power opening some more cans of worms.

First things first, cut out the cute hoorism, the slush, the ‘gravy train’ generated by your position.

Unless something like that is cleaned out then all will just settle down and carry on as before.

The govt. has the opportunity right now to get very active in this issue…… have they the cahunas to make real change.

This is a one off opportunity for once and for all.

Really, this show is money for old rope. Very expensive money for old rope. Spent years listening to Marian talking about property and property crisis. Didn't really bother switching over to Brendan.

After the end of the show commercial break. TWO ads are PLAYED OVER ONE ANOTHER. Shambolic Clusterfook.

Where's Ballsy anyway this weekend?? Checking out his accounts & deals, getting the ducks in order?

Noticed that. They're getting so much advertising revenue they can't even fit them all in the one break. Must be down to NK 😀

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,120 ✭✭✭Gen.Zhukov

I think RTE are getting a bit rattled with other presenters openly declaring that they are no longer with NKM so they can discuss the RTE situation without bias - That's why McDonald stated today that she left NKM in Sept 22

All that to me just confirms that Brendan '€1560 per hour' O'Connor is, as I've always suspected, an out n out N Kelly boy

When you work 2 days per week, you need more holidays to recover.

Wasn't he also off for a weekend 2 weeks back?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,395 ✭✭✭✭Furze99

No sign of the bould Brendan again this weekend.. time to change the name of the show!

Note the steady attempts by RTE now to rehabilitate Mr.Tubridy and paint a picture that the public really want him back, but can do without Noely. Has an editorial message gone out?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 35,916 ✭✭✭✭NIMAN

Brendan works 4hrs per week on rte radio, yet still needs a fortnight off.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 16,130 ✭✭✭✭Spanish Eyes

Radio shows should never have a presenter's name in the title, it's a hostage to fortune. Call it Saturday Today, Sunday Today, whatever, same for Today with CB, the xyz Show. Just be generic then the presenter is not "the show" although most of the time their stand ins are "sitting in for" them anyway. Could be me, I'd do a great job.

Was there any misery today, death, mental health, exercise, healthy food, avoid sunburn, don't drink, don't enjoy yourself, be good. Any of that? If not it must be the sitting in presenter with a bit of sense at last.

I see he is still writing for the Indo whilst on his holidays from the radio.

Maybe he is penning his pieces from a foreign beach?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 20,382 ✭✭✭✭Brendan Bendar

Yes there is a definite move from the upper earners to try to get Tubridy back, both former and retired.

See Lyster threw in his oar there recently.Of course they realise they are all in there together.

If one brick in the wall is dislodged the whole lot could come down.

The worst thing thAt could hit the taxpayer is that the licence fee be abolished.

At least now the public have some control over their input. We can’t let them bully us into the ‘direct debit’ box.

That would be disasterous, the taxpayer would be butt reamed and then subjected to ‘reach around’.

    Must not happen….

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,395 ✭✭✭✭Furze99

No sign of the Bould Ballsy again - how many weeks is that? Is he in deep doo dah?

Or just spending as much of his lavish RTE earnings (our licence fees) as quickly as possible?

Edit to add: three weeks MIA.

Yeah, only has to work 4hrs per week, and has nearly had a month off.

Nice work if you can get it, at €245,000 per year.

He highlights everything wrong at rte at present.
