For my generation, Larry 'was' radio. The man had a huge pop musical knowledge. R.I.P.

Grew up listening to him and always seemed a gent. RIP.

A true gentleman. May his gentle soul rest in peace.

It's the bally ballyness of it that makes it all seem so bally bally.

Sad day, not many broadcasters left that we can use the cliche 'we won't see the likes of them again' .

    RIP Larry Gogan.

RIP Larry. Irelands biggest loss from presenting in radio / tv in my lifetime. Sleep well.

An iconic voice on Irish radio. Insane that Gaybo, Marian & Larry would be gone in such quick succession. 3 of the original radio legends, voices instantly recognisable to any Irish person over the age of 15.

. Had a great radio voice but I can't really say he did anything significant with the medium-to my knowledge

    You answered your own query.

Radio is about the voice. He had the best.

It always comes in 3s, well when you keep counting in 3s it would.

RIP Larry. He, like myself, never lost his teenage love for pop music. His enthusiasm never waned. He was heartbroken when his wife died some years ago. RIP.

Loved that line after the quiz

    RIP Larry

Although Ryan Tubridy annoys the hell out of me, I was very fond of his pet name for Larry ~ Sir Laurence of Gogania. Very fitting.

It's the bally ballyness of it that makes it all seem so bally bally.

Agree with all the comments about his born radio voice.
From all accounts an absolute gentleman.

    RIP

Genuinely very saddened by this news. A thorough legend of Irish broadcasting. RIP.

Larry was never afraid to play what music that was current and I remember listening to 2fm in my teens/20's thinking that he was playing great new music and as I got older he kept playing new music even though it wasn't my thing but I appreciated that he kept with the times.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,867 ✭✭✭Bummer1234

Loved the just a minute quiz, He had a great voice for the radio and when people say he was the voice of 2fm...that was the truth.

    RIP Larry

A really nice man. He had a great speaking voice.....I think the key to his success is that he never grew old and thought of himself still as a young man in his head

    RIP

Likewise, always admired him for moving with the times whether it was his own taste or not.

Don't judge me on this but always remember in the mid 90s and couldn't believe when he played Scooter and was made up for the day.

"Larry plays your golden memories, a classic everytime, the Golden Hour"
"The national chart show. Larry Gogan 2fm"
"The one at one, on two"

Those jingles play around my head almost every day. Growing up in the 90's, when the dial was welded to 2fm, bar the occasional detour to Atlantic 252 (but hey, that wasn't in stereo, so you didnt stay long!), Larry was on 6 days a week.... His rundown of the charts was top, and it meant it was the weekend!
The actual excitement of having the roadcaster visit my town in the midlands for the Golden Hour....

    RIP Larry.

    That's sad news alright.

Larry Gogan by all accounts was a gentleman and that is certainly the impression I got of him over the years.

Of course he is most associated with 2FM. But before 2FM (or Radio 2 as it was called originally), Larry used to be one of a handful of presenters on Radio One playing pop music. He used to present sponsored programmes, which he continued to do for a short while after the move to Radio 2.

Over the years, Larry Gogan presented pop music programmes on television in his own inimitable relaxed, but enthusiastic manner. He also used to present a Junior Eurovision on Radio 1 and, for many years, did the commentary for the main Eurovision on RTE One and radio.

Larry's health had deteriorated over recent years and there was always the suspicion that he would more or less die with his boots on. It didn't matter to him if he was on 2FM or RTE Gold, provided he was doing what he loved best, i.e. playing his music selection.

    RIP

    RIP.
I met him a few times, he was a lovely guy.
That illness didn't really suit him.

RIP Larry, truly one of a kind, born to be on radio. It's very sad.

All these household names passing on in quick succession, the names that we (kids of the '80's and '90's) grew up with. It makes me feel old and all too aware that we're only here for a short while :(

Larry was a legend and a gentleman.

I recall Larry doing a golden hour using 1 possibly 2 compilation CDS all live from the road caster - that was Larrys brilliance - he was the show.

Loving tribute from Ronan Collins aired early on Radio 1 - well worth a listen.

    RIP Larry

'Ah they didn't suit you' when someone did badly in the quiz. :D

Rename it Radio Larry, or RTE Gogan

I recall how Joe Duffy dedicated a liveline show to Larry Gogan exactly last year when you made the move to RTE Gold.

A good number of listeners were texting in saying RIP Larry, what an omen!

Does anyone know what caused his death?

RIP Larry gogan. I could do a big post about what Larry gogan meant to Irish radio but I’m sure people far far more qualified than me will and have already done so.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,101 ✭✭✭Max Headroom

Rick O Shea On Gold playing Roy O "Its over".....true that......:(

I know there is the Larry gogan suite in the radio centre in RTE but is the building itself named after anyone ? Maybe that’s an idea.
