PHEV if they weren’t so prohibitively expensive, so it’ll have to be petrol then. Wouldn’t touch diesel or full electric at this stage.

PHEV imo don't suit many. You need high enough milage to justify the extra cost Vs petrol or hybrid, but a low km commute (30-40km total) to make the best savings by running on electric. The 2 don't mix. Also, their electric power umph is boring.

Second hand electrics is my next car. Currently on an ioniq BEV and couldn't see myself going back to traditional fuel.

Diesel. And I won't be apologising or explaining myself to anyone with an issue with that.

I replaced herselfs car recently with another petrol car. That's my bit for the environment done.

Diesel for my daily , petrol for my next weekend car. If they allowed VAT reclaim on petrol id gladly move to a supercharged petrol range as the daily but alas the TDV8 will have to do for now.

    PHEV I'd imagine, probably a 530e 2017 or 2018.
Problem is I've a diesel card in work because company can claim vat back on diesel but not petrol, that has to change ASAP

There are certainly good deals to be had with diesels ATM. I would dream of m getting a phev Octavia next year but if the superb pricing is anything to go by I couldn't justify the cost. Will probably be diesel again.

    Diesel

Petrol. 2nd hand petrol cars are going for nothing. Simple na engines are generally quite reliable too.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 17,819 ✭✭✭✭peasant

Probably electric ...or even better hydrogen fuel cell.

Not for another 10-12 years though, so we'll see what's available then.

Fuel isn’t my number one consideration. I pick my car on looks, comfort, tech spec, price etc.
All the above being equal, I’ll think about fuel. Got an Audi A7 recently and the only choice I had was diesel.

Petrol, just like I’ve been buying for the last 30 years. There are no nice looking hybrids within my price range and EV is a non starter with their poor range so I’ll be driving petrols for another 10 years at least.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,083 ✭✭✭freddieot

Bought a new diesel last year. Will change in about 4-5 years, probably for a hybrid (depending on price , spec, power etc.)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,081 ✭✭✭fricatus

Another electric. Unless I’m forced into it, I won’t be going back to the noise, smell and expense of a fossil car.

    Petrol or maybe another diesel?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 404 ✭✭ml100

    Diesel

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 114 ✭✭nu_90

Both petrol & electric here. Working out great. Petrol car for longer journeys . Electric for small. Electric car putting on the miles very fast.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,009 ✭✭✭micks_address

Petrol Tiguan incoming..second car is petrol jazz, does low mileage will look to petrol or hybrid when replacement is needed

Diesel. And will continue to do so until Eamon Ryan is Taoiseach!

I never really get into these debates as most people who wade in have really strong opinions towards their flavour petrol/ diesel/ ev and there's very little good can come of the discussion.

That said, we bought renewed a PCP on a new diesel 4 months ago. Good car, suits our needs, PCP keeps your options open for 3 years time.

IMO there is a long time left in the combustion engine and I'm not saying that because I want there to be, there just isn't many viable options available and the product spread isn't coming down the pipeline very quickly. I cant ever picture the governments 2030 strategy happening as there wont be product available at the time to service peoples needs and requirements.

That and cars depreciate pretty steeply too, they always have. There isn't any huge change on the horizon so any new car you buy soon is naturally going to lose a rake of value anyway, regardless of what the medium term holds. I'd certainly have no issue buying a suitable petrol or diesel car in the next 5 years anyway.

EV's for some, miniature American flags for others.

Petrol or diesel, if I have a choice. Don't have the money for an investment in electric or hybrid and to fund the increased associated ongoing service costs ...... so I expect the next government to address that situation by making it more difficult, impossible, or extremely expensive to buy a petrol or diesel, without making it any easier to go electric - that's the way it works, isn't it?

Genuine question - why are we not growing rape seed and using it to make bio diesel? Could it not be done as a national project with state run bio diesel plants producing the fuel and farmers encouraged to stop growing beef and move to bio diesel production supply? There was some tinkering around the edges with this over the years, but the government never got on board and the interest fizzled out.

Is there no consideration of options we can take as national policy to improve the situation so that there are viable and affordable alternatives, as opposed to continually hitting the consumer in the pocket to force change?

My next one will probably be petrol. I'd look at a PHEV but I don't think the saving would be worth it. The current bus will be motoring on for a good few years. When it's due for replacement (with something with grunt), I may not be able to buy anything petrol powered (Sure the new Cupra Leon is going PHEV and Seat have said no more internal combustion engine models after 2026! https://www.autocar.co.uk/car-news/new-cars/cupra-top-new-leon-line-241bhp-phev)

However, I think myself the petrol/diesel cars will be around for a lot longer than that. I was listening to a spokesperson from Engineers Ireland on DriveTime on RTE Radio 1 saying that the future demand for copper and lithium from electric and hybrid cars, won't be able to be met (it can't be extracted and processed in the volumes needed). I think the push for everyone to go hybrid/electric isn't taking into account the ability of the manufacturers to make enough and the usage profile of some users

Oil price too low too many quids to be made by growing cows and sending the meat to China or some other place

    Two reasons.

First, modern diesel cars cant run on biodiesel - The four diesel engines at home have warnings not to run them on Biodiesel (VAG have stickers inside the fuel flap). I believe the reason is insufficient lubrication of the diesel pump, or something like that.

Second it takes too much land that could be dedicated to fuel production.

The pump could surely be changed for one that is compatible? There isn't anything fundamentally wrong with the engine block itself that makes it incompatible?

Not sure. Have until the summer to make the call but open to all depending on price and how they might suit.

Probably a smaller petrol car would like to stay diesel when the superb needs replacing and would be looking at 3 or 4 year old cars but this nox charge as well as vrt think would put me off do any of you guys know what the nox charge be on say a 2016 litre tdi be

Most of our land isn't suitable for anything other than grass or trees and our beef farmers aren't earning a cent off the cattle, with the last few years of bad weather a lot are making a loss on each animal, its the grants and off farm work that they make their money on.

For me I'd love an EV but as I've no access to a home charger it'll be a petrol with some type of battery, just like my current one.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,777 ✭✭✭✭fits

I’ll replace the Q5 with a heavier diesel 4x4 for farm work and towing etc

OH will replace the C200 with an electric car for our 30 km commute which we share.

Not until the cars die though. Could be a few years yet.

    Probably a Toyota Hybrid.

Electric would be an ideal option if they accept Amnesty's demand for more ethical production of the batteries.

My PCP on Seat Ibiza cupra ends in May and my plan is to go with a bang for my last petrol car, before we will be forced in to hybrids and electric cars.
First on the list is Seat Leon Cupra, or something else in hot hatch territory. Might even consider 3l diesel BMW . If I won't find anything suitable, then will just pay off balloon payment and drive it for another year.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 367 ✭✭ExoPolitic

diesel, as electric cars hold their prices too well and ican really only afford cheap bangers lol

recently bought a 2.0 diesel auto for the family car, up and down to mayo frequently from dublin so it will get the mileage.

I have the old family car which is a 2011 Smax 2 litre aswell, my commute is pretty short (about 26KM round trip) I'd cycle but have no showers so assuming that stays as is, in a year or so i'll look at a 2nd hand electric.

Mine is a 07, I think Insurance will become an issue once it turns 15. A great diesel car, I am going to drive it a few more years then switch to Electric

Diesel, noting comes close to it for my needs, really liked the idea of a Hybrid but the numbers killed it.

Too late. I bought her a top spec Auris 1.2 turbo with a 6 speed manual. She loves it to be fair. It replaced a poverty spec Yaris.

The hybrid would absolutely have suited her, with the journeys she does, but there was no talking to her. I'll try again in 10 years time when she gets her next car.

PHEV (just because there isn't a full electric 5 series on the way.. so 530e will do.. end of 2020/start of 2021 most likely.
