Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Tackling is an essential part of the game but leave it to the backs who are the primary line of defence. Forwards should be involved at the breakdown as that is one of their primary roles including the set piece.

Most obvious way of outing yourself as a complete and utter spoof: saying that backs are the primary line of defence and that forwards should only hit breakdowns.

We all know backs don't tackle.

Backs Are the primary line of defence that is just a fact of the game. True forwards slot in depending on the defensive system you use but to say backs are supposedly girls who don’t tackle doesn’t negate my point.

Leinster play a fanned defence where the number on your back doesn’t exist so that plays well to getting up tackling stats but I believe better rugby is played when players stick to their roles. Baird and Doris also have off the charts tackling stats considering the time they were on the pitch.

I’m not saying he won’t be good enough in time just that I think there they are more seasoned attritional players than him. He’s exceptional with the ball in hand in a run out game but that’s all I’ll take from this match.

    Ruddock 22
    Deegan 29
    Doris 21
    Baird 20
    Molony 24
    Leinsters top 5 tacklers tonight

    Connachts top 5 were their 4 5 6 7 8

Your post is quite frankly, BS.

Making more tackles doesn’t make it your primary role. They have specialist positions which have requirements of them primary amongst which are scrummaging line outs and hitting rucks. Backs hit rucks also but that doesn’t make it their primary role in the design of the game

They are primary defenders off set pieces and should be better at setting the line but tackling numbers are almost always dominated by forwards. The only way you could swing that argument is only looking at set pieces or if you're focusing on the cost of missing a tackle which is worse in the midfield and wide. Even then that'd be reaching and questionable. I played as a wing btw so I'm not a forward denigrating backs here.

Right so we’ll leave the backs around the fringes to make all tackles to one-out runners and then leave the forwards to defend against the opposition backline.

    Sounds like a great idea!.

venjur is definitely one of the girls, there’s no way he’d have been a fattie. In fairness it’s only the outside backs and half backs that don’t tackle.

Well I suppose in the modern game and once you get past first phase it could be considered their primary role. But if you ask most people to describe the roles of a forward does they would start with scrum line out and rucks not tackling. I played a system in the old days where backs tackled forwards and were relied upon to do so when not stationed on our own try line. I guess the game has moved on a lot since then where roles have crossed over

If you asked most people to describe the roles of any player on the pitch, I doubt they'd start with tackling.

    Everyone tackles.

    Except Rob Kearney, obviously.

What should a back do if they come up against Mako Vunipola? Take him around the ankles like your friend. Granted a back row forward does have a primary role as tackling off first phase I’ll concede

A lot of the time Leinster didn't compete at the breakdown. They had a plan to fill the field with 10-12 defenders. Now there is only 7 backs on the team so that makes the "primary line of defence" argument utter BS especially as teams would have 2 or 3 backs covering behind the defensive line.

I don't think you thought this horsesh1t through properly.

Whether you watched Connacht or went out with the missus, your night will end up with getting f*cked.

Only joking. I know your married so you'd only get screwed if you watched Connacht.

There were 565 attempted tackles in this game.

For reference, last year Leinster v Bennetton was 470ish, and I skimmed the data to see if that was a record. And it was.

    Eh... You first sweetheart.

What stats have you offered? 15 Granny's?

You say Deegan doesn't hit rucks yet offer no stat to back up how many rucks he actually hit.

Seriously mate I'm a bit worried about you. You threatened shooting yourself last night and your posts just seem a bit bizarre. If you want to talk I'm a pm away. I don't know if your posts are actually a cry for help but if they are ask and I'm here

    IT report

“[CONOR] thought he heard a crack on his ankle,” said Connacht coach Andy Friend, “and his brother [STEPHEN] did his knee so it is not a good day for the Fitzgeralds. It didn’t look good either.”

Connacht just need to get through European games with no more Injuries and hopefully get players back after the break

If you’re offering I could use help with the U9’s next Saturday. Honestly I try to put my coaches hat on and nobody listens.

I have a mate in work who coaches his sons minis and he legitimately couldn't tell you a prop from a winger so I've no idea why you're using that as some sort of qualification.

You can easily tell the difference as the prop shouldn't be making any tackles.

Come on lads, are we really entertaining this guff...

    ‘Main opponent’.

You make it sound like some big rivalry. You’re discrediting facts and making claims which are not only untrue but you can’t make any basis for them.
