How do people on the dole afford to live in Dublin?

€200 a week isn't very much. Should additional funding be made available to help people stuck in the Dublin poverty trap?

Original thread idea by a recently regged account. This should be good.

I thought FG HQ would be closed tonight

    Obviously not

No, they should be moved to Carrick On Shannon.

No. Because someone else pays for it- apart from accommodation (which will be paid for or massively subvented) you can live quite cheaply in Dublin.

I don't vote for Fine Gael. I'm on the dole and find it difficult to get by.

Does the dole pay for you and your wife’s VHI?

There's nothing suitable. I don't want to work in retail, or anything really stressful.

    No, dole should be scraped.
People need to work for their money.
I would be ashamed not being able to support myself and expecting others to pay for it.

Register as homeless, between 50 and 75 a week in a hostel.

Feeble attempt at a rise. Your energies are wasted here, you should do something more constructive with your time...like applying for a job.

As you can see you'll get little sympathy here. If you're on the dole and struggle to live in Dublin, move. Loads of places in Ireland that are lacking population.
If you want to stay, work, whatever job comes, start low and build yourself up.
    Simples....
    FYI. Life is stressful.

Your employment status has absolutely nothing to do with it.

    Not your best effort.

Keep applying. You only need to be lucky once. That's what the IRA said, when they tried to assassinate the entire British government back in the '80s. I like to apply the philosophy of the IRA to lots of things in life - job-seeking, dating, the national lottery, minor disputes with neighbours...

I've tried but I've qualification outside of ecdl. I don't want to work in retail or McDonalds because of pride reasons. Also I'd lose rent allowance

And there in lies the problem- there’s a huge cohort that feel
Zero shame and rather the opposite- see all this as an “entitlement “

It is an entitlement as an Irish citizen. There's nothing wrong with it

You could work remotely writing opinion pieces in dole scroungers who don't want to work in inconvenient locations or stressful jobs and expect their handouts (paid for by the TAXPAYER ) to be increased if they live in expensive locations. Mail readers expect and like to be infuriated at people they believe are beneath them and love a piece that reinforces their view that the poor are the poor because they are lazy. Your work will give you the outrage pay off you so desperately crave.

I love seeing dole bashers froth at the mouth. Hope you clowns realize if the dole was abolished tomorrow, not a single penny of the savings would go into your pocket. Also, many of you probably work in a business that would collapse if the dole was abolished as all the money goes back into the economy. Why don't you direct your anger towards the ultra rich corporations like Apple that owe billions in unpaid tax? Because you are small minded cowards that's why, you can only punch down. Or if you think it's such a sweet gig pack in the job and go on the dole. (Stock response: No I wasn't raised to be a layabout etc.) Wizz off, be grateful you have a job and admit it's a far better life and stop begrudging people living at a level of minimal sustenance.
