The secret to opening cans of Guinness

What's the secret here? I've opened hundreds of them. Sometimes I get the perfect pour, other times I'm left with a head 2 inches deep. Sometimes it opens and there is a slight hiss from the widget, other times they open and bubble all over the place leaving a messy head. What's the ****in secret? Always drink responsibly mofos

I’d like to raise awareness that some people aren’t lucky enough to have Guinness this Christmas.

You open it, then pour it into the can in one. Exact same outcome every time.

I know. Imagine all those Cork langers sipping on their Murphy's for the next couple of weeks? Poor sods

Tesco doing 24 cans for €20.

    Use a clean glass.

You open can, put glass on top and practically invert it straight into glass and lift can out of glass as it's emptying.

If only that were true TM

Yep, this. Whole lot in in one go, it won’t fizz over the top, and let it settle.

Excellent question, Gerry. I’ve consumed probably thousands of cans of Guinness at this stage, and feel like I’ve got the answer. The glass must be very clean. The cans should be upright in the fridge and the ideal temperature is around 5-7 degrees. Having the cans too cold leads to a flat head and substandard beading on the glass.

48 cans of the stuff for 40 eurons in SuperValu at the moment.

Bought 3 slabs. Hell yeah, I'll still manage to **** up the opening of half of them

I put the pint glass over the can and then invert with the can to the side of the glass.

    Sorry to the Cork people.

    Tilt, always tilt.

A slow pour with an almost “horizontal” tilt will see you right.

Don’t listen to the can “inverters”, that’s all nonsense.

Excellent spot, dude. The answer to the question ‘do I need another 48 cans of Guinness?’ is always yes.

Don’t pour it into the can, this is a rookie mistake. Us professionals pour it into the glass,

Loads of people. Guinness from a can is an excellent product these days.

It really is. Very few other draughts are replicated in a can as well as Guinness is.

Kilkenny, and John Smith's and Tetleys over the water are quite good creamy beers from a can.
I find with guinness cans i drink them at breakneck speed. I just opened one and nearly half gone in first sip. Goes down so fast.

I'm 3 down the road after 45 mins. First few always go down quick. Then the gas pressure within rises and I slow down a bit. Can or draught though, it's the best all round alcoholic drink in my opinion. Love the stuff. I don't drink spirits although I'm sure there are experts out there that will comment on all types of whiskeys and expensive brandys. For me, a good pint of plain can't be beaten

That applies to Guinness in general. People spout a lot of guff about how heavy it is and how it’s an meal in a glass’. The reality is it’s very easy to drink. Far easier to sink 10 pints of porter than it is 10 pints of lager. Very easy beer to consume large quantities of.

And the good thing about Guinness is you’ll go home or to bed when you’re done, very little crazy with it...unlike whiskey.

And after 10 pints u have the little Guinness baby to look forward to the morning after...

This is the main reason I don't drink spirits. I'm liable to do anything after a few half ones

Don't open the can slowly. Open it in one snap motion and it won't foam up. Then pour it down the side of a glass . Jobs a good un.

Ive had to do it a few times. Its actually ok. Remember they brought out draught guinn that you drank from a bottle at one stage? It didnt last long.

I think yourself and corners picked me up wrong. I have passed the junior cert and would never in a million years do anything like that I was just curious if anyone ever has. Its not something I want to test myself.

Crack it open..put the can head first into the glass as far as it will go.. pull it up and squeeze it as the glass is filling, so the can is maybe a centimeter from the liquid.. perfect, but you have a crushed can.. seriously..this is the best way..try it..

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,055 ✭✭✭JohnnyFlash

I drank a heap of warm Guinness from the can at a music festival last summer. It wasn’t great but better than drinking warm lager. Preference for a warm festival canned beer would be something like London Pride or Rebel Red.

Now that's another discussion altogether. Is there anything nicer than sitting in a cosy pub, drinking a pint of Guinness in peace. Especially a pint that you hadn't planned and the missus doesn't know about. Turf fire in the background and a barman who doesn't need to be asked to pour your next pint...

Put it in a paint shaker.... Perfect plint each time.....

Clean glass is the secret, clean the glass in hot water, using little or no soap, (any soap used should be high quality).
Use very hot water. Scrub sink first to get rid of all oil/grease/scum/residue in the sink.
Wash glasses first when doing washing up, as water will be grease/oil free.
Using gloves like Marigolds, it helps to increase the heat tolerance.
Use a non abrasive brush to scrub the insides. A cheap softish nylon brush is fine. You can get one in Dealz for little money.
Only use this brush for glass, nothing else.
    Rinse in cold water.
    Dry naturally upside down.
If you want to dry them use a lint free cloth. But this is usually not needed.

This is for any beer/soft drink/spirit with mixer/sparkling wine.

My father was one of the " chosen few" , he worked in for Guinnesses.
He regularly came home with his allowance of bottles of draught Guinness, unlabeled.

I've decided to grant you absolution, you're forgiven , go in peace.
