I had a licence for my w7 and now have getting build 7601 This copy is not genuine as thinking crap cleaner might have removed it on a scan.

Man, that upgrade was painless and it left my hacked quicklaunch bar intact so everything looks as is except the start menu. I have that open-shell thing on another laptop to make it look like Win 7. I'll eventually stick that on this laptop. I was dreading it but its grand.

Hi guys, need your help. I said on this thread that I upgraded my laptop last week and all went well and it did BUT I had only been using the internet on it since. Today I've tried to open word and excel files to work and they open for a split second and then disappear - I get to see and do nothing. What's wrong and what do I need to do with the laptop?? I desperately need it for work. When I click on the start menu it's Microsoft Office 2013 I have. I never had any issues before. The internet ( google chrome) and pdf files are all in working order so why not Microsoft Officer things which I really need??

Instead of clicking on a Word or Excel file, open Word or Excel directly from the Start Menu, click Start on the bottom left, you'll see a list of all the installed programs, find Word or Excel and click on it. It probably needs to be updated or re-registered but opening it this way should hopefully give you some extra detail on what is happening.

Thank you very much for your very swift reply. When I clicked on the start button I noticed an orange spot on it, hovered on it and it said it had updates so I chanced my arm, clicked restart and update and waited.....
Laptop booted fully and the word files are now opening for me in compatability mode. THE RELIEF.
BUT the .xlsx file work just sent me will not open. I'm getting the box ssaying Microsoft has stopped working completely blah blah blah.
Any advice on what I should do now?

I just clicked on Start and then on Microsoft Excel and tried to access the Excel.xlsx file that way with no success - again being told that Microsoft has stopped working and they'll let me know if they find a solution to the problem or some such lies.

If you are desperately stuck and in need of a quick fix install OpenOffice.

The spreadsheet app is similar to Office, although you do need to make sure to "Save As" XLS file format.

But if you just need to open the XLSX files to view, you should be able to do this with no problems on OpenOffice

I tried running the Win 10 upgrade now, it gets to about 85 or 90% and then it just stops and disappears....no upgrade completed.
    Is anybody else getting this?

My 2nd one completed no issues at all, thanks OP as I would have missed this.

Don't forget to turn off Windows 10 Bloatware. It especially applies if you have an older PC with less ram, but it's advisable to do it on all PC's.
If you have noticed performance issues or random freezing etc., this is probably the reason.

Over 180 GB spare so that shouldn't be an issue

No error messages or telling you after reboot it's reverting to the previous OS?

If it sticks at at the same % it's likely an update incompatibility or "driver migration" issue. Try the ISO download for another machine option and either burn to a DVD or mount it. Run the upgrade from within win7 (eg. double click the disc) but refuse any updates until after the install is complete.

Hopefully it should complete - then check W10 device manager for any errors.

Download and run in Win7 compatibility mode any missing (Win 7) Chipsets, Storage, power mgnt, Video, Sound, Ethernet, Wireless, Bluetooth, Touchpad etc in that order.

You can install from USB stick.

I had to do this with mine.

Do a fresh install, you need a Mac or Linux computer to down the full ISO file and create bootable USB drive....

    https://www.microsoft.com/en-gb/software-download/windows10ISO

You’ve been routed to this page because the operating system you’re using won’t support the Windows 10 media creation tool and we want to make sure that you can download Windows 10. To use the media creation tool, visit the Microsoft Software Download Windows 10 page from a Windows 7, Windows 8.1 or Windows 10 device.

You can use this page to download a disc image (ISO file) that can be used to install or reinstall Windows 10. The image can also be used to create installation media using a USB flash drive or DVD.

Updated windows to windows 10 on an old i5 4gb ram laptop and the hard drive kept filling up - it has a 120 gb SSD every time I switched it on - after install I’d have something like 79GB free but without doing anything and just leaving it on for a while the hard drive would run out of space after 10 hours.

I did a fresh install of windows from within windows 10 - same thing happened

Any ideas what is going on - I’m not downloading anything while the drive fills up

    Try this:
Type CMD in the run/search box at the start menu, and then choose to run command prompt as Administrator.
In the command prompt window type chkdsk C: /f /v /x and press Enter.
Reboot to scan, and check the drive for errors.

Try also disabling the bloatware a few posts back and cleaning up the drive including hidden files.
    bloatware - https://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showpost.php?p=112388183&postcount=162

Type in Disk Cleanup in the run/search box and check C Drive.
On the list of things to check, tick the boxes of Temporary files, Previous Windows Installations and Windows Updates then click OK.

Run Disk Cleanup - particularly 'clean up system files' to remove the old OS installation(s) and also free up all but the most recent restore points.

Delete temporary files also gives the option of removing old OS installs from there and after a couple of weeks you can delete the delivery optimization files too.

I find Wise Disk Cleaner very useful for regularly pruning (using both 'common cleaner' and 'slimming system' options) with WinDirStat offering a good chart of drive space.

Just a side note, in case not everybody knows.
If you have Windows 10 Home version on your pc and you would like Windows 10 Pro, it's about $99 to upgrade.
If you have an old Win7 pro or Win 8 pro key lying about, just click settings, activation and change product key, then enter your old Win 7/8 pro key and Windows 10 Home will update itself to Windows 10 Pro version for free.

I just did this, using a key from a laptop that I upgraded to Windows 10 last year. Worked great - thanks.

Sorry 'bout revivng an old thread, but this may be handy for many here
    Download this - https://github.com/Sycnex/Windows10Debloater

    For the less techy folk..

    Extract it.
Open PowerShell (or PowerShell ISE) as an Administrator (Start - search - type Poweshell) - Right click and select Run as administrator.
Leave that open, and go to the extracted folder.
Right click on Windows10DebloaterGUI and select open with notepad.
    Select all and copy (CTRL+C)
Go back to Powershell and paste it (CTRL+V)
Once it has finished pasting, press Return and it will start with GUI.

If you select Remove All Bloatware, that will run and remove all of the options on the app. Or you could customise and only remove the bloatware you want.

I have used the above.. I was/am recommending it.
The space depends on what you decide to remove. All or customise, what version of windows 10 you are running, how long you have been running it etc..

Did I read somewhere that you can upgrade from a non-genuine Windows 7 to Windows 10 for free as well? I'd be surprised if they allowed that!

I have a 10 year old Dell Inspiron laptop (fairly high spec when it was new) that I use for browsing the net. It’s running Vista and works perfectly, It’s fast and no lag unlike a 2 yr old HP running windows 10 which is utter rubbish, slow and forever updating and then crashing even though it’s only ever used for typing/word/PP etc.

I’m half thinking of upgrading the Dell but don’t want to ruin what I already have. Can I upgrade for free on this current offer? I do run into problems now and then with pages not supporting my current browser but it’s not that often. Any advice?

The one I just upgraded is at least 10 years old and had Windows 7 premium from new. Working perfectly now anyway.

The HP might have spec more similar to a tablet. Not sure if you can upgrade from Vista, possibly.

Check if your laptop has a factory reset option, as you should back it up anyway before upgrading, then if you don't like it after removing the bloatware, you can fatory reset. Not sure about Vista updates though.
TBH, I am suprised that more people haven't migrated to Linux since this came out.
