    The prince of Darkness?

    The fallen angel?

    The snake?

So ......what is the devil ?? the evil in men ? the evil in nature ?? Some supernatural force??

Does god sometimes WANT us to disobey him?

And my god isn't he sexy?

You should watch Hail Satan? on Netflix. Modern Satanism isn't quite what you'd expect...

Nope. Ditto for any other manipulative and exploitative religious drivel.

The foreigner residing among you must be treated as your native-born. Love them as yourself, for you were foreigners in Egypt. I am the LORD your God.

Fair point. I should have said it wasn't what I had expected (apart from the ubiquitous black clothes, dark make-up and dodgy tattoos)

    I do.

Met him years ago in the form of a shadow. Frightening yet rather calming. This was pre-alcohol days so i wasn't drunk.

    It moved gracefully

I don't believe in God, so I'm hardly likely to believe in an evil alter ego.

So is the Devil meant to be evil ? He punishes evil people in Hell so would that not make him Good ?

I'm not sure what to think OP. I'm caught between believing the devil is dead and buried in Killarney or that they are a member of the British Army.

It's crazy that anyone would dedicate their life to a fairytale wrote thousands of years ago.

A fairytale that has caused more suffering across the globe than any other.

About a man who walked on water, when he wasn't turning it into wine and who rose from the dead.

I understand that people need some meaning in life, something that attempts to make sense of it all but I think society is at a point where it is ready to take a step back, say "hold on, what the **** is this ****e" and move away from it altogether.

The devil is a fictional character, which was used to keep us in check. A fictional character like most in the book, who aren't historic.

    The world's biggest lie.

The Helel ben Shahar, the Morning Star, the descent of Venus into the Underworld. Lucifer seated on his infernal pillar in the Tenth Circle of Hell, picking his teeth with the femur of the Iscariot. Oooh yeah!!:cool:

I had the screen slightly minimised when I read this so couldn't see the poster's name and thought 'that sounds like one of Jim Goose's musings'. How right I was!

Theologically speaking, the notion of "Hell" refers to the absence of the grace of God, being the traditional Judaeo-Christian deity. The story of Lucifer falling from Heaven is much older than that, being rooted in the old Greco-Roman mythology. He is used as the personification of that state, but the whole bit with the fire and brimstone and cloven hooves is largely artistic license. :D

He was no match for Johnny though:

The devil bowed his head 'cause he knew that he'd been beat
And he laid that golden fiddle on the ground at johnny's feet

Johnny said, "devil, just come on back if you ever want to try again
I told you once, you son of a bitch I'm the best that's ever been"

He played, fire on the mountain, run boys run
The devil's in the house of the rising sun

Chicken in the bread pan pickin' out dough
Granny does your dog bite, no child no

No, that's a misconception. Lucifer and his crew will be hrown into a lake of fire to burn there for eternity. No demon's torture people in hell if we're going by the bible

Well that Spanish train still runs between
    Guadalquivir and old Saville
And at dead of night the whistle blows
And people fear she's running still

And far away in some recess
The Lord and the Devil are now playing chess
The Devil still cheats and wins more souls
And as for the Lord, well, he's just doing his best

Is there a decent Origin Story going? I think Milton probably has the best one? Only one?

Everyone needs an origin story these days for the PR. Even the bad guys like Joker are getting their own these days.

If that's what you believe then who am I to stop you? Doesn't mean I have to buy into it though.

Two sides of the same fairytale, isn't it?

I actually do know a few satanists.

They are neither as nasty as some would have you believe but nor as 'fluffy' as others would have you believe.

The cleverest thing the devil ever did was convince people he didn't exist ...YOU ARE GIVING HIM WHAT HE WANTS!

So when people reply to your question by saying the devil doesn't exist, you take that as evidence of how clever the devil is, which of course presumes the devil's existence as an a priori?

a priori means knowledge that comes from logic and reason rather than personal experience.

    NO.

It is why when I have been asked to be a godparent, (strange thing to ask atheist,)
but have to say I can't because I would have to say I do believe in devil and all his works publicly.
