Very sad to hear of a death after a man being struck by a Luas tram at Charlemont at about 3am.

Condolences to the man’s family and friends.

I wonder will this impact future late night service extensions?

Sad, but why any question about the service?

Should we ban cars because someone dies in a car accident.

Find out the circumstances, if any safety changes are needed, make the necessary changes, but to withdraw a much needed service is way over the top

Alcohol is probably the main factor in this accident.

    Nice assumption there.

They don't stop public transport after these incidents. If they did we wouldn't have any public transport because every mode of transport has has fatalities. They will review the operation of the service and make improvements if necessary.

    3am Christmas time and accident

I would say the chances of alcohol are high

would it be on that section of road between charlemont and harcourt?

Yeah, Garda press release says it was a cyclist. Other media saying the same now as well.

People will care now at least, rather than the thinly veiled implications they deserved it for going out for a drink.

I asked because the late night running is is not part of the normal service and I am sure the proximity to late bars and night clubs and the possibility of alcohol related falls etc must be a factor in decisions too give permission for these extensions.

I do hope that it doesn’t affect these extra services.

Thinking drink is involved due to it happening at 3am Saturday night is a far cry to insinuating they deserved it.

Oh, I see that now. Awful still. RIP.

    Investigations still necessary of course.

Oh please!!!! Noting the high probability of alcohol being a factor is a million miles away from implying anyone deserved anything.

The fact your mind would go there is a sickening indictment on your absolute need to take offense where none is given and your warped view on others.

Just because it's a cyclist doesn't mean he wasn't drinking.
I am not saying he was but you can't say either way.
What I will say and I say this everytime there is a collision with a Luas is it runs on tracks and it's traffic signals are well tested by now if you have a collision with a Luas it is nearly always your fault. There is of course the possibility that the driver of the Luas made a mistake but I think that is unlikely. There will be an investigation, there are cameras all over the trams and we will find out in due course.
It is sad for the cyclist and his family and for the Luas driver but that only highlights the importance of finding the cause of this collision and changing or advising people so that it does not happen again.

Why should the possibility of alcohol related falls be a factor in permission for late night services ? Are you saying that because people are drunk abd May fall thst the rest of us should not have late night services available? Should we ban taxis ?

How about we tackle the problem of pubs serving obviously drunk people ?

Sad for his family but surely his decision to cycle on the luas line at 3am... Meanwhile, subzero temps and homeless literally in the streets.

Indeed: every alcohol-related death just points out that we need a major attitude change towards drunkenness.

Serving alcohol to anyone who is obviously drunk should be gross misconduct for venue staff and loss of license for the venue.

And RIP to the person who died (no matter how many wheels their vehicle had), and condolences to their family and friends.

I'm still not convinced. You're saying that because he was wearing headphones while cycling on a luas line at 3am it wasn't his fault? We're getting into blame territory here which is a bit unnecessary but saying as you started debating against a logical concept that Luas trams are hardly ever wrong it just seemed a bit.. wrong.

Alcohol is probably the main factor in this accident.

Thousands of people can enjoy a night out without alcohol. Thousands also work in Dublin at night and would be going home at that time after a hard night's work.

Cause needs to be found, if safety changes need to be made, then make them.

    But stop a service? Nope

No we should restrict them from the city centre though because they cause havoc.

It's so odd. Comments are stacking up on this news on the Journal because a cyclist is involved. Every week there seems to be a pedestrian killed by a car, including an 18 year old a few weeks ago, and you get one or two comments. The hatred for cyclists because, like every other road user, they aren't perfect, is ridiculous in Ireland, especially given that they never harm anyone.

    RIP,

Ive cycled through there late many times... i always have to keep very alert there as so many things are happening at that junction with traffic flow...add in drunk pedestrians and u turning taxis ...it is crazy

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 24,644 ✭✭✭✭punisher5112

    That's bizarre.

Well twice on Eden quay and the other was just off O'Connell st.

Cut on shin from the O'Connell Street one and bruises from the other 2 but one went into the wall on the quays and the other went flying as he hit my shoulder....

That one I walked on while crying with laughter as he was on the ground....

Seems to be the way. The motoring related deaths barely raise a comment any more - they’re just normalised - even where the motorist was many times over the drink driving limit. interesting how this thread has developed - different tone on the comments from the first few threads to when it became known a cyclist was involved.

Why would you find that funny? In about 20 years cycling in Dublin I've never seen any kind of accident, I have to doubt your sincerity.

It's sad and of course it's a horrible event but society has changed and most are out for themselves to be honest.

Unfortunately I see the bad driving from motorists and cyclists, rickshaws and scooters.

Some risks taken are unimaginable but yet they continue to do it....

Had one on the north side walking with his bike from a side road proceed to walk out onto the road where I was already mid way past in a large vehicle, he could have easily gone under the rear wheel and he gets on cycles up the road to shout abuse and give the fingers and then proceeds to cycle through red lights with crossing traffic..,.

The numpty even put in a complaint to my work place stating he was wearing a black coat, hat, bag and trousers.... No idea why he would even add that to the complaint. It was dark also.

Why wouldn't I find it funny he was a scum bag, expected me to move while cycling at speed on a FOOTPATH.....

Don't believe me, I know it happened and that's enough for me....

At the end of the day, some family is waking up to devastating news this morning that will change their lives for ever. People need to focus on this, rather than anecdotes that they seem to keep at hand for these situations.

I've no time for the stupid cyclist hatred but people are hit by and hurt by cyclists.
I have never been but I do know someone who was quite badly hurt by a scumbag on a bike on the footpath.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,739 ✭✭✭scamalert

someone who has to see Dublin quite rarely to be fair im amazed theres not 20 deaths each day, pedestrians in the morning dressed pitch black running across busy roads without single hi vis item, cyclists in city center ride at speeds and break rules where single error from either driver could result in instant death is mind numbing, that theres only few deaths occurring, given how many take the risks, driving inches along vehicles that could crush them in a second

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,769 ✭✭✭Pinch Flat

Wait - pedestrians should wear hi vis? In Dublin? Last time I looked it had pretty decent lights on I the dark and cars also are equipped with head lights.

The hatred for cyclists because, like every other road user, they aren't perfect, is ridiculous in Ireland, especially given that they never harm anyone.

They actually do harm people.. I was out of work for 11 months after being knocked down by a cyclist resulting in severe concussion, two broken elbows and a broken wrist. The little prick just picked up his bike and pissed off.

Oh, I'm an avid cyclist before anyone jumps all over me.

Re the cyclist killed, it could have been a bar worker on his way home from work and not a drinker.

Could have been gargled too, I was roped into a Christmas drink a few years back and tried cycling home afterwards, God only knows how I made it home (I kept falling off lol)

Poor lad either way, a very sad Christmas for the mans family & not a particularly great one for the LUAS operator either.
