How what exactly was done?

Inspect the page, turn on your debugger and do some snooping around....., the are at least using visjs for a start.

The data seems to be from the Twitter API (https://developer.twitter.com/en/docs ). There are some good books on using Social Media data such as "Mining the Social Web: Data Mining Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Instagram, GitHub, and More". The other side of the backend might be a bit more complex. At its core, it looks like traffic analysis.
