If I'm reading that correctly it claims Ivan the terrible was reigning in the 1750s which is totally wrong.

    Congratulations, you have mapped population.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,106 ✭✭✭✭josip

Population will contribute to it for some counties, but that fact that it doesn't align for many counties makes it interesting.

eg Killkenny with a 100k vs Kerry with 150k, yet Kilkenny with over 4 times more claims?

Where are you getting this from? There's no data for Kerry.

it states that at the bottom of the infographic - carlow and laois also did not provide info.

My mistake, I thought Carlow, Laois and Kerry were in the lowest band. But, I still don't agree that it's simply a mapping of population. Why is Louth in a higher band than Meath? Are claims higher in counties with more populous urban centres?

Donegal seems to be an outlier, would public liability include road incidents?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 78,474 ✭✭✭✭Victor

    Generally no.

Road traffic collisions would generally come under motor liability. However, if the council repaired a road and did a botch job that caused injury, then that would be covered by public liability.

    • Not doing a road repair = non-feasance = NO liability, but may pay out.
    • Doing a road repair wrong = non-feasance = liability.
    • Doing a road repair maliciously wrong = malfeasance = liability.

Population density comparison, Bangladesh Vs russia (stolen from Reddit)

the map projection used there magnifies the size of russia, tbf.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,178 ✭✭✭Brief_Lives

big time…. its still ridiculously large compared to Bangladesh.

The current population density of Bangladesh in 2024 is 1,180.60 people per square kilometer

The current population density of russia in 2020 is 8.5 inhabitants per square kilometre

    Russia is largely uninhabitable

    Bit of both .

An awful lot of Russia is frozen for a large part of the year. The likes of Norilsk only exist because there's natural resources to justify settlements (oil/gas). Nobody bar a few traditional nomads would be there otherwise.

But Bangladesh is ridiculously over-inhabited. Birth rates are still very high and the country is literally falling into the river in places. There's huge pressure on space

The largest commune is the city of Paris with 2.5 million inhabitants; the smallest commune has only one inhabitant.

Map of English monasteries prior to King Henry VIII's dissolution in the 1530s. This helped enable religious reform but also transferred a lot of wealth and political power away from the Papal church and over to the King and his new Church of England...

Nitpick: The Church of England wasn't a new church; it was the old church, under new management, so to speak.

It follows that the dissolution of the monasteries didn't mean a transfer of wealth to the Church of England, but from the Church of England. It's true that some of the assets of the dissolved monasteries were transferred to the dioceses, so individual dioceses may have become richer, but most were not; they went to the King, who either kept them or distributed them as patronage to landowners and officials to secure their support and loyalty.

The upshot of all this was a substantial reduction in the church's activities. The network of dioceses and parishes was maintained and even enhanced, but a lot less was done in the way of providing schools, hospitals, almhouses, food distribution and other forms of poor relief. The new poor laws imposed this duty on local landowners instead, but they were distinctly unenthusiastic about discharging it, and the resulting hardship for the poor was one of the reasons for the Pilgrimage of Grace revolt in 1536.
