Best camera phone

Looking to buy a new phone with a top quality camera.

Was looking at the Huawei P30 Pro as its camera is supposed to be brilliant but I'd miss the headphone jack.

What would be a good alternative?
    Thanks

If you can wait for Q1 2020, then potentially the S11 will be worth waiting for by all accounts.
The S11 will supposedly step up the mark in the camera dept.

If you're looking for something cheaper then maybe a Pixel 3A or Xiaomi Mi Note 10 with its Samsung 108p camera.

    S11 won't have a headphone jack..

Perhaps, not yet confirmed 100% until the phone is officially launched by Samsung.
Also it could be the case that not all S11 models will have it removed.
Take a wait and see approach on this perhaps?

Thanks for the recommendations folks. Was looking at the Pixel 3a with Vodafone's offer but I'm already with them so can't avail of it.
@Peatys would that be a realistic option with the headphone jack insert? That looks like it could be awkward to carry around.

If the camera is the most important feature for you, I'd recommend you follow Adrian Weckler (Tech editor, Irish & Sunday Independent) on Twitter. The camera seems to be the only feature he cares about when he reviews new phones.

If he’s an Irish tech journalist (and I’d use the word tech loosely in this country) then he won’t acknowledge anything other than iPhones exist.

If you want the best overall camera on Android then you won't go far wrong with any of pixel 3/3a/4/XL

I thought the lack of a headphone jack would be a head wreck, but I've adapted to using an adapter quickly and it's no biggie.

I have a Samsung s7 & recently bought a pixel 3a for my wife. I haven't done too much comparison but compared the cameras on them.
The s7 pictures seemed better in daylight, the 3a colours were a bit more real but the s7 pics looked better. In low light the 3a was far superior.
Only based on a few pictures taken 1 day but I would have thought the 3a would have been better in daylight. The low light pictures were ok but not anything special, grainy if you zoom in.
If the camera is the main focus why not buy a good camera?

They really aren’t. They’re more versatile but they don’t take better pictures.

If it’s for a chap and they’re mainly into photos then the 3A would be the one. Good price and camera.

not breaking the bank but very good camera -> pixel 3a. as good a camera as most need tbh. takes excellent photos day and night. if you port a number over to vodafone you can get it for €180 until jan 2. complete bargain

money no object -> latest huawei pro phone e.g. mate 30 pro, latest samsung note.

Best of the best but won’t be able to stray too far from an electrical socket ever again -> Pixel 4

They’re very good (I’ve one myself and the zoom is class) but they don’t take as good a photo as the Pixel.
I’m not sure how the headphone jack helps with photography.

How do I do this if I'm with Vodafone?

Ah yes sorry I was going off the thread title, though you get an adapter with any phone without a jack. Not as handy but I’d put up with it if I wanted the best camera possible.

Get a free Eir or 48 sim and use that number to port. Then just use your original voda sim.

Has to be done online. There's a thread in the bargain alerts forum about it.

I dont put much stock in this shootout between the flagships but he does bring up a very good point.
Most people go for the brighter photos despite them not being the best photo.
So you cant say what is the best camera for someone else as your u dont know what they consider good.

    https://youtu.be/KxsFat1ImiY

Also there is a respected ranking guide out there called dxo mark. It used to rank professional camera bit recently turned their attention to phone cameras also.
They rank the huawei p30 mate pro as the top phone camera out right now.

Any of the Pixel phones, the camera is just awesome imo.

Dxomark is not totally impartial tho.

    They take money from manufacturers

It's a for profit software consultancy

    https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.androidauthority.com/dxomark-ranking-troublesome-805633/amp/

I remember years ago buying a sony flagship that was up the top of the list but found out that it took sh1t photos from using it when I got it.

Thanks folks for all the suggestions. Much appreciated.

    I've it narrowed down to:
    - Huawei P20 Pro
    - Huawei P30 Pro
    - Google Pixel 3XL
    - Google Pixel 4XL
    - Xiaomi Mi 9t

Not narrowed down much I know lol

(I've ruled out the Pixel 3a as the screen is too small. I prefer bigger and all the above options are over 6" as far as I know.

I currently have a Xiaomi Pocophone F1 and the pics are good but not great.

Would people feel these would be the best options or would a Samsung be an option?

There is also the Pixel 3a XL which has a 6 inch screen (and a bigger battery)

you could get that for €320 by porting a number to Vodafone which gives you 100 off (if you have a spare sim around or can get one from eir, three, 48 should work)

    http://shop.vodafone.ie/shop/phones/google-pixel-3a-xl-pay-as-you-go-just-black

    Mate 20 Pro another option

Mi 9t camera not as good as those of the other phones tbh

    Thanks Glasso. Appreciated.
I probably won't go high-end phones as they are too expensive atm.
3a XL or P20 Pro definitely a good shout.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 331 ✭✭S.G.M.

Ok so if you use the offer on Vodafone the, Google Pixel 3a XL is 320e and the Huawei P20 Pro is 430e.

P20 Pro worth the extra 110e?

Yeah wouldn’t touch the P20 Pro over the 3a if you want a good camera. Wouldn’t even get the P30 Pro over it.

faces are always dark and eyes are just black.
i had a samsung s8 before it which was far better indoors.
    good battery though.

never had a pixel...but very impressed with its camera.....pixel 3a (large one) is amazing value, storage is only thing lets it down.
