Best mini-series by a mile has to be Chernobyl
5 of the most engrossing, horrifying and brilliantly acted hours of stand alone TV

Chernobyl with honourable mentions to The Deuce, Succession, The Boys and Dark

Very good year for tv overall

I actually think it was a slightly disappointing year. If you look at the Budget TV Series get this days, I would even call it a weak year.

Ray Donovan, City on a Hill, Limetown, Money Heist, Castlerock, The Handmaidens Tale, The Man in the High Castle, The Looming Tower, so many great series not in that poll.

    Cobra Kai gets my vote.

Oh changed my mind Yellowstone gets my vote.

No I'll go with Top Boy.

    No Mr Mercedes it is.

Scratch all of the above it's Line of Duty for me.

No I think ill go with Escape at Dannemora instead.

Forget all of the above it has to be The Righteous Gemstones.

The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel and Outlander would get the vote in our house.

    Chernobyl, for me.

I think I'll go with Kidding now.

No it's got to be Barry.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 61,272 ✭✭✭✭Agent Coulson

    No Unbelievable gets it.

    The Deuce for me.

Hard to imagine how I'd have felt if you'd told me this time last year that I wouldn't be voting for Game of Thrones in this poll :(

Legion's final season has to be the best.

In a way if someone had told me that Game of thrones, Big little lies, True Detective and Black Mirror would underwhelm at start of year, I would have been concerned but there is so much tv out there now that it's easy to find great tv.

Like with films, even if big budget films are crap, you can find the smaller independent films that deliver

Chernobyl most over rated tv series of the year.

I voted for When they See Us. I thought it was the most heartbreaking, beautiful mini series and one of the best shows i've seen on Netflix

Chernobyl and Mindhunter were very good also

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 266 ✭✭mcgooch

Chernobyl was by far the best TV I've watched this year.

Honorable mentions to Mindhunter, When They See Us, The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance and Fleabag. All excellent shows.

True Detective season 3 tried to align itself as much as possible with season 1 which is no bad thing and it was ok for the most part, however it didn't even try to recapture a sliver of the magic of season 1 and just played it safe.

Season 2 at least tried but didn't succeed however was still a better offering than 3.

What we do in the shadows for me.
You'd have to get video tapes of it off your cousin in the states as inexplicably it hasn't aired here or in the UK, but Doom Patrol was probably the best show of the year for me.

Chernobyl, it set a new benchmark

    best TV drama ever?

Chernobyl made the Game of Thrones offering look amazing by comparison.

Chernobyl was brilliant. Gets my vote.

Only a troglodyte could claim Chernobyl was quality show.

Care to elaborate on that? What did you not like about it?
I would have it as one of the best shows of the year.

Succession or The Deuce for me. So much great TV this year. I'm quite enjoying Watchmen and the Mandalorian too which should finish by the end of the year

It has to be succession. BOAR ON THE FLOOR!!!

Chernobyl was excellent, but an honourable mention must go to State of the Union. Ten 10 minute episodes brilliantly written and superbly acted by Chris O'Dowd and Rosamund Pike.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,661 ✭✭✭Acosta

Definitely Chernobyl. Harris and Skarsgard deserve many awards.

    Succession in at number 2.

Wonder did Alpha_zero vote for Chernobyl!? :D

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 290 ✭✭Troyaferd

The Chernobyl Series is good, but I agree it's a little overrated when you look at all the attention it got. For me Too Old to Die Young is clearly the best Series of the year.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,927 ✭✭✭✭castletownman

    1. Mindhunter. Arguably the best casting ever seen in tv. Raised the bar for crime shows.

    2. Chernobyl. Some of the most truly terrifying scenes shot for tv in a long time. The scene where they are on top of the roof clearing it in small groups at a time in short time-frame was epic.

Next would probably be Succession, although I think most of the main characters are sanctimonious (and I don't understand any of the corporate mumbo jumbo), and I haven't seen passed ep.3 in season 2 as for some reason I can't download any more episodes on demand. Have yet to catch the new season of The Deuce.

it's currently holding 61% of the votes here with the next show not even in the race
    I think people liked it

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 29,828 ✭✭✭✭CastorTroy

Of the ones I've seen on that list, I would probably go for The Dark Crystal.
Carnival Row was a show that not many expected to be as good as it was

Chernobyl was great but I thought Euphoria was close.

Ya well then the majority of voter's are troglodyte's then. It's easily the best show of the year. Would you care to explain how Chernobyl is not the best series this year.

Final Season of Mr Robot is currently airing. If it was an option it'd get my vote! Superb TV.

I'd give it to "The Boys". brilliant anti-hero stuff. and I have no interest in the Marvel / DC cookie-cutter tosh. Don't let the super-hero angle put you off it.

    Succession for me!

Chernobyl for me, but The Virtues deserves to be on the list for Stephen Graham alone. The man is a genius.

Good shout actually. That was a brilliant show

    Spiral
    Giri/Haji
What We Do in the Shadows
Back to Life (woman who killed a school friend returns to her home town after prison release)
    Year of the Rabbit
Years and Years was pretty good and an interesting concept.
    A Confession
Chimerica - a series I linked with little enthusiasm but which turned out to be absorbing story of truth, identity and pursuit of ghosts.

Every time I go to post a favourite I stop, because I don't have a single solitary show I'd put up top. I'd easily select 3 or 4 and part of me wants to close the thread and reopen with a multiple choice poll.

So, I loved Chernobyl and Dark Crystal equally, but for completely different reasons and wouldn't choose between them, among others. The list is pretty arbitrary to begin with, and the results not necessarily indicative IMO.

We have proportional representation in this country, don't we, FPTP shouldn't apply here entirely lol.
