Out of curiosity, what is the reason behind these changes?

It tweaks the capacity of the transponder. How or why is above my payscale :o

Above my payscale too but I think the change has been made to fit in more channels on that transponder in the future

Changing the FEC on the transponder from 2/3 to 5/6 changes the net bit rate from 33.79 Mb/s to 42.24 Mb/s, giving an additional 8.45 Mb/s of capacity.

This is at a cost of requiring a higher signal to noise ratio at a DVB-S receiver (6.5db for 5/6 compared to 4.4db for 2/3).

However, since the transponder is using the UK/IRL spot beam and thus packing a right punch of signal strength, next to no one in Ireland should notice any effect on day-to-day reception, just a little lower rain fade margin in very heavy showers.

without doing any research into this, is this why ITV HD sometimes breaks up when the weather is poor? Usually just a flick of the channels gets the signal back. Funny, that only happens on one TV, not the others which are all hooked up to the same satellite!

That's a UK spot beam. There's speculation they might be going FTA. It would be a nice Xmas pressie.

The main benefit of +1s is when you accidentally stumble onto something half way through or forgot to set the timer.

UKTV shuffles satellite channels; some viewers affected

Full article explains what is happening and the reasons for such changes can be found via below web link:

Not sure it such moves will lead to a drop in encryption flag on those UKTV channels currently behind a paywall in the short term? In the event that more of UKTV's channels went free-to-air on digital satellite, this would be a very good way to further expand catch-up tv service, UKTV Play going forward.
