Monitor brightness - the best way to do it?

I have to use a colour calibrated monitor.

To achieve the required level of brightness for the calibration, I need to brighten it.

I know I can brighten it via the controls on the monitor.

I think I can also brighten it via the graphics card.

    Is there a third way?

Which is the best way to brighten it, or does it make any difference?

    Thanks.
