Youtube tag -> make it use HTTPS?

    Hi all,

Probably connected with the boards upgrade to using HTTPS instead of HTTP, at least in my browser I find that when one uses the YOUTUBE tag, and paste in a reference to a youtube video, the system translates that into an HTTP youtube reference.

This causes, at least my browser, not to show the Youtube video because the browser will typically not allowed mixed content, e.g. HTTP elements in a page that is HTTPS overall. Might the devs alter the functionality of the youtube tag so that it causes the insert of an HTTPS reference to the youtube video?

I didn't realise that happens. I post trailers on the films, tv etc boards.

I'd also recommend that the youtube tag use https if a reference is passed into it.

It already works ok with https if the full link is given to it. Example:

Some kind of campaign video for season 3

just as a test for this post, I'll try with just the reference 'TRbCRZJTSOE' instead of the full link I used 'https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TRbCRZJTSOE'

Edit: from me checking just after I posted. The result is that https is used.

All seems to be working as hoped for me. Is there a specific video that this is happening for you, SeanW?

Try it on Touch, with mobile youtube URLs eg. youtu.be - that's when I get this problem, constantly. I have to extract the video ID tag and just use that in the youtube tag.

Could you provide complete list of steps to recreate please? How are you getting the mobile YouTube link?

When I click share and copy link, I get https://youtu.be/ZwBi2uuA84A

Then with YouTube tags I get

    Test:

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c5W06xR8EYk

Well for a start touch shoves url tags in there...

    doesn’t seem to work eh

The first embed that managed to work in this post (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c5W06xR8EYk) is from YouTube’s page on safari, using the iOS share button to copy the url. The second url is from using the share/copy button from youtube itself either on the webpage or in the app.

    [Y tag]ZwBi2uuA84A[/youtube]

And see you only used the video ID not the copied link..

    Hi all,

A while after I posted this thread, I figured out how to replicate the problem.

The problem I encounter only happens after I edit a post, and am redirected to the thread. Then, I don't see the video in my post. But if I access a thread any other way, e.g. by clicking into it or selecting a page from the forum list, I see the video without issue. I was not able to verify if the same thing happens to any other youtube tagged videos on the same page. I am also unable to edit my initial post to test that here, as post editing seems to be disabled. But if anyone else cares to try to replicate the problem I'd suggest:

    1) Post a video with a YOUTUBE tag in a forum that allows post editing.
    2) Edit your post, make some change. Save the changes.
    3) The system should redirect you back to the thread, focusing on your post.
    4) I expect the space to be blank where your video should be.

After making edits and getting redirected, if you refresh the page manually does the video appear?

I'll try it here, but I don't know if I can edit posts in this forum.

    Another trivial edit.

Yes it reappears if I hit refresh,

If I make a post, edit it, save the changes, then the page does not show the video.
But when I refresh the post-edit page, then the video appears, even though the URL does not change. For example, for my video above, the URL was
    https://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?p=112178955#post112178955

I also checked and for some reason, when my video does not show up, it's only the video from my post that I can no longer see. All the other videos in this thread show OK.
