Running Away From 30

    So here I am on a cold winter's night starting a log.

    A little bit of background. I have been an on and off runner for years. There are any number of reasons for the times I've stopped but I won't focus on those here. TBH most of them relate to a bad knee but I've probably used that as an excuse more than anything.

    I turn 30 the December and now seems like a good a time as any to give this a go again. My girlfriend has embraced running this year to a serious extent and I don't want to be left behind.

    In terms of goals the only two events I have on the horizon are the Achill Half Marathon and the DCM 2020. Lofty goals certainly but lets see how we go.

    In terms of where I am starting out from now. I would be able to go out and run a 5km in sub 30 right now (just), not having run in a few months. The rest of my PBs are below.

    The plan is to start slow and short. Going for a 3km wish run tonight and keep it and that level for a few weeks with hopefully park runs at the weekends.

    Any advice will be greatly received, I am not overly keen on joining a club etc but will follow training plans. I will certainly be following the DCM Novice Plan next year if I get an entry.

    Starting weight is 93.9kg too after a few months of excess. My weight fluctuates massively. Have touched 79kg early this year. I'm happy anywhere sub 85kg so will get back to that soon. Back following a IIFYM plan on that front.

    Anyway out in to the cold I go. Got to start somewhere.

    So that's the first run over. Short and very slow. Positives are actually going out and getting it done and I wasn't our of breath at the end and found it very easy.

    Run 2 down. Busy week meant I could only get out today. Did a slow run with my girlfriend, had an awful lot more in me but trying to train slow.

    Have signed up for the Aware 10km in the Phoenix Park on the 14th of December. My first race since Cross Country in school 16 years ago. I'm going to follow the below very shorted Hal Higdon training plan until then. I know can run 10km based on the other day in under an hour. Not putting any pressure on myself for this but will be nice to get out and do a race.

    This was the run set out by the training plan, tbh I wasn't looking forward to it because it was so short so just decided to do it fast. Still have a head cold and blocked ear so certainly not 100% health wise, so again I was just happy to get it finished and move on.

    So work threw the training plan out the window completely. I only ran twice at all in December and they were both just quick 5kms. Was a bit nervous about the race this morning, both being my first ever organised race and also not having done many runs. Thankfully, I found the whole thing brilliant.

    There were defiantly things I’d do differently, like wear a jumper to the start line! I found it hard in the first couple of Km’s with the crowding and I couldn’t figure out if I was going way too fast or too slow. Settled in to it all great though and felt good the whole way round, was able to increase speed in the last km which probably means I left something in my legs which is nice to know. My headphones gave up the ghost during the race so I wasn’t really sure at all times what time I was doing etc and tbh with the training done I was just hoping to get around in under an hour.

    Well, I crossed the line in a chip time of 53:01!!! A PB of 01:46!!! Couldn’t be more chuffed. I turn 30 tomorrow so thing was a great birthday present. Interesting Strava reckons it was only 9.91km but its a PB no matter what.

    I can’t wait for the next race now!

    Nice long slow hilly run this afternoon. Elevation gain was 94m. Got some new runners over the weekend in Amphibian King in Bray. They looked ay my gait etc and recommenced a pair of Soucony, which were very comfortable today.

    Was great to get back at it yesterday after a few days off. Delighted with the pace too.

    Obviously the DCM being cancelled ruins the plans for this year, but I'm more determined than ever just to take the time to train. Would love now to get under 4 hours for the Marathon next year.

    For the time being I'm going to start a half marathon training plan next Monday, with the goal of doing the Achill Half if it goes ahead in mid September.

    Will also do the Fingal 4 mile virtually this Sunday and then the Boards Time Trial at the end of the month. Lots to keep training for.

    Seems as good a time as any for a weight check in too. I started this log in October 2019 at 93.9kg before touching 97.84kg in early January, but I'm delighted to say I tipped the scales yesterday at 85.7kg so everything is going in the right direction. Doing some HIIT classes a few days a week too which will hopefully help with overall fitness and body composition.

    Time to bring this back.


    It’s been a long time, I’ve run very sporadically in the past 2.5 years, and I let me marathon entry go unused. I went out for a run with my fiancé, who did run the marathon 3 weeks ago and failed out at 16miles. There was no way I was going to do it just to fail. I’ll enter for next year and let’s see how the next 362 days goes.


    Doing the Clontarf 5 mile at the end of the month, so that’s something to get out running for.
