I see them the odd time in Ireland.

You have a normal standard car plate such as 181-WX-123 but instead of IRL beside the EU flag, they have replaced it with a D.

The you have Irish plates (usually on BMWs and Audis and the odd Merc) but often on other cars too with the German emission and tax stickers.

Do they think they're actually fooling anyone? Why bother with replacing an IRL for a D.

If it has a D it is a German registered car.

I've seen a couple of cars recently with Irish reg numbers but rear plate is yellow like the UK ones. No EU flag, 'IRL' or county in Irish.

I was about to reply its probably just a person with an actual German reg. I'm driving one and I seen another in Sandyford yesterday. I didn't think anyone would be that stupid until I seen that picture :P

The reason for this is when they cross the border they think it will throw off the police...

There many more variations beside the german plates:
-thin and fancy looking fonts used so can be seen with magnifying glass only,
-a space separating the numbers after the country reg (Fiat 500, BMW 520, etc. looking at you, like xx-d-y 500),
-the eu blue and stars plus IRL missing, black and white plate, nothing else.

It's a Donegal thing.. might be easier to blend in over the border is the reason I'd imagine!

Funny how tastes change, I had german plates on my E38 10 years ago and thought they were the business. Now I think they're cringe. Nice, stamped metal plates all the way now.

Spotted a clapped out old Toyota on the M1 today with rear yellow plates from the famous border county of Tipperary

I don't care what plate they use on their own cars.
A plate doesn't make a good car bad or vice versa.
If you buy a car and the plate isn't to your liking €30 will sort it.

Why it can't be a straight €1000 fine is beyond me, IRL and EU logo on the plate for an Irish car, how complex would a law like that be.

Gards could have a great laugh.

Sorry bud, we called the German embassy and they said the car must be on false plates. Extradition to Berlin in the morning for you.

The law. They have a specification for the plates and while the German font is legal the rest of the plate isn't. It's the broken window theory.

Who cares, it's their car and the reg is legible.

The German font is not legal as it has serifs, Irish plate script must be sans-serif.

The main requirements on the format of vehicle registration plates are:

The registration number, which consists of numbers and letters, must be in black on a white reflective background
The name of the county of registration must be in Irish, (for example, Baile Átha Cliath)
The EU flag and the letters "IRL" must be placed on the left-hand side of the plate. The flag shows 12 gold stars in a circle, with the letters "IRL" in white underneath it, all on a blue reflective background.
No other numbers, letters, or marks, should appear on your registration plate.

There is no font or style specified in the SI. It specifies character/stroke size and spacing. Nothing about serifs etc.

Theres no font specified but there is a standard width and size that is the only legal plate allowed.

    15. The identification mark shall appear in black characters and each letter or figure shall have a height of 70 millimetres and a stroke width of 10 millimetres. The total width of the space taken by each letter or figure (other than the letter "I" or the number "1") shall be 36 millimetres. The distances between adjoining letters and adjoining figures shall be uniform and shall be not less than 8 millimetres.

Most of the German plates don't fit that requirement and will fail an NCT.

    because they're sh1tboxes?
I wouldn't mind Toyota drivers doing it. Everyone knows one of these plates guarantees you an extra 20hp so maybe toyota drivers could drive at the designated speeds instead of 30-40kph below them :)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,244 ✭✭✭sdanseo

I dont have them any more but I put my old 3 series through 2 NCTs with the legal version of these. Only the font was different - no stickers, no D, and no cutout in the zero, but the same size characters.

Not a word was said to me either time.
They were 100% legal and suited the car. It's a matter of preference.

There is a perception that all of these style plates are illegal, people need to do their research and read the law as I did before buying them.
