Storm Lorenzo Chat Thread.

The suggestion was made earlier in the 'Lorenzo' thread to open up a separate thread for general discussion on this potential storm. I think this is a good idea as that thread is now incorporating both technical discussion and more banterish posts, which is making it harder to follow.

It is probably best if we keep the original thread where more technical discussions & charts etc can take place to allow people to have a quicker access to the latest thoughts on the storm, and keep this one for more general chit chat and reports etc.

Our Cork-based company is planning for disruption. Many of our operational staff live outside the city and have been unable to travel during previous weather events. We always take things on a case-by-case basis but with an eye on keeping business operations running.

I will be in Dublin (tech conference) for whatever happens so will be interesting to manage any impact remotely.

It seems to me a RED Alert is now becoming increasingly likely for counties along the west coast, especially the immediate coastlines .

So what precautions are you taking.

I'll be making sure I have the bath full of water. I've a well, so no power = no water.

I have a small petrol generator with enough fuel for 30hrs, so that will keep the freezer working.

    Open fire, plenty of coal/timber/peat

Some gas and gas camping stoves to cook with.

I'm sure there's plenty of food in the house., I won't be going shopping.

Other than that, I'm just going to gather up a few torches and check the batteries.

How well prepared are you ?

RTE news just now said that Lorenzo is most eastern hurricane ever in the Atlantic, wasn't Ophelia further east when it tracked between the Azores and the Canary Islands?

Funnily enough there are some weather concerns in Japan.

    https://mainichi.jp/english/articles/20191001/p2a/00m/0na/006000c

In the event of a group match cancellation, the result is declared a draw. Effectively ending Ireland's world cup! Very slim chance of that happening though.

Due to fly home from Malaga on Thursday night estimated arrival time into Dublin of around 11pm. Any care to estimate my flight cancellation percentage chance? Don't mind if Aer Lingus want to put me on a Sunday evening flight instead. 32c today here in Marbella!

    Groceries booked for tomorrow.
    Gas cooker and suitable kettle.
Small generator around here somewhere, need to organise petrol for that.
    Filling bottles of water.
    Low on candles.
    Plenty of torches and batteries.

Being well prepared and equipped is simply standard living out here. We get cut off from the mainland often in autumn\ and winter so all is already here. I lived 5 months with no ESB when I was first here . All winter that was. Worst part was no computer unless at the school or when I went over to shop. So no great hassle this week.
