Big crash, Roglic down and Movistar missed the crash, went straight to the front and started driving it........Gap already over a minute, and Roglic is alone hanging onto Astana who had Superman Lopez fall as well. Roglic could have the race stolen from him here.

    Finally they knock it off.

Race wasn't even on and they put the hammer down after the crash.

Omar Fraile giving Valverde a right earful :pac:

Movistar do this a bit too much, time and time again it's them that attack. I get that there's a cultural difference but you'd love to see karma come calling some day.

Load of Bora on the front. Wondering are they setting this up for Sam

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,256 ✭✭✭MPFGLB

    Movistar should have kept going

Rubbish rules that apply ot the guy in 1st but not the guy in 2nd or 3rd or10th or 56th

You wait for all crashes ory ou wait for none

    Cycling at times is ridiculous

Get Sam to Quickstep they're teasing him now

Wow Sam did well there to finish 2nd.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,507 ✭✭✭✭dastardly00

Ah I don't f**king believe it... Sam second again and beaten by Deceuninck Quick-Sep!!!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,998 ✭✭✭c.p.w.g.w

    2nd for Bennett again.

Is that's 2 stages wins and 3 stage runner ups in this vuelta?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 16,874 ✭✭✭✭dahat

Again a very creditable second for Sam, great result.

Great ride by Sam.... Sill in the hunt for green Jersey and a chance to complete hat-trick in Madrid. Here's hoping for a massive break tomorrow with a 10+ min gap.

Jaysus think that might be more then a dodgy bbq

He'll need some intermediate points to overhaul Roglic I think, 25 for the win in Madrid:

Sam has been 1st or 2nd on a quarter of the stages, so far.

All stages were won by a different Deceuninck Quick-Step rider when Sam was runner-up!

Very poor camera work and timings by the production team but seemed to me Bora had no one chasing after Archbold peeled off

Bora are more interested in backing Majka for 6th place than wining stages

There's only one intermediate sprint on Sunday so he'd need to take that and the stage win to be equal to Roglic. Roglic would also need to finish outside the top 15 tomorrow.

I gonna say it...can Sam with in Yorkshire at the end of the month?

Worlds is a very hard course but Ireland needs to back Bennett with Dan Martin in reserve

There's an intermediate tomorrow if the peleton goes easy at the start and he gets over the Cat 1. We defo need a break to win tomorrow though and not the GC riders contesting the stage. Wonder when the last time a Sprinter won the Green Jersey at the Vuelta was, I can't remember it.

Sam said his radio wasn't working. He thought they had caught all the breakaway riders so he thought he was in the lead until he turned the last corner and saw Cavagna!! :(

Bennett is definitely Ireland's strongest option on form

I would agree, what was the idea with the mini split after roglic got back on after the crash. 3 Bora riders and valverde. This led to a stall when it was brought back together again. Disappointed for Sam but his performances this Vuelta have exceeded even my biased expectations. Hopefully he caps it off on Sunday with a stage win.

He didn't exceed my expectations ...He is the strongest sprinter in the field by a mile

I like more though that he can do the uphill sprints and beat so many classic riders

For me he is a future classics winner ...

Given the racing so far, I'd say there's precisely two chances of that.

If Sam and Roglic were to finish on equal points, what's the protocol? - decision based on highest stage placings?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,763 ✭✭✭✭Inquitus

Seems the UCI is planning to sanction Roglic for using the cars to get back on, it's being discussed by the race jury anyways.

Of course when Bennett gets to DQS next year he will win classics and one day races as well as sprints

That is if he ever gets away from that Bora shower

It's Hansgrohe that make the showers... Bora make cooktop extractors :D :pac: :pac: :pac:

If Sam gives all to get in an early break tomorrow he might get to that intermediate sprint. He has to get over a cat 1 but if he kills himself to get over that and then down the other side he can relax afterwards. I'd say it's a given there'll be a break. Roglic won't want to waste his helpers on the first mountain to keep the pesky green jersey.

Agreed Roglic won't go chasing Green, and Sam could take a leaf out of Sagan's Tour de France points playbook getting into the break.

I have no issue with Movistar attacking, it is racing, I hat this hanging on for the leaders jersey. No one would hold on for me if I was winning a stage race in Ireland, they'd quite rightly put the hammer down.

A puncture or mechanical is one thing, a crash caused by someone else (or even within his own team) is a bit different, dont you think? Movistar always seem to be the bad boys when these situations crop up.

Aye especially when he had the beating of Stybar and Gilbert up the ramp, was a Stage there for the taking if his team had been there to close it down in time.

Most of the peloton seem to have the opposite opinion. Lopez absolutely laying into movistar and Valverde on twitter. Calling them disrespectful idiots "what a world champion we have", etc.

No way of knowing that. They could have just been marshaling him in case their team mate got caught.

Would they have stopped if the crash did not involve the leader? If it was serious enough to stop the race then fair enough but if they wouldn't have been lambasted if other riders were down, then they shouldn't now one specific rider is down. If that's what people are advocating, I agree, but keep it consistently fair or don't do it all. If it was a serious crash, then the comms should neutralise it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,966 ✭✭✭Mefistofelino

Its funny when the pros get upset about riders not respecting the "unwritten rules" when several of them can't even follow the actual written ones.

I agree 100%. Crashes are part and parcel of racing. Avoiding them can come down to luck at times but luck plays an integral part of every sport and is one of the elements that make all different types of sport compelling at times.

Footballers putting the ball out of play when a player is slightly injured also boils my p**s. If the ref wants to stop the play for an injury, let him.

I can't see beyond Van Der Poel for the World's.
He didn't skip the MTB World Champs. for nothing and he's flying' at the moment.
And the course suits him down to the ground.
    I suppose that's why he's 5/2.

Watching him demolish the field on that up hill finish the other day was something else.

Sure MVP is very strong but will be well marked and not brought to the line

    Matthews looks good now too

Will be very hard for Bennett because of the distance and multiple climbs. If he can hide in the pack

My favourite is Gilbert not least cos Belgium have such a strong team

If Dan Martin has any format all Ireland could do a late attack and leave Bennett to save energy in the pack

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,817 ✭✭✭marvin80

Bennett just pipped on the last stage - he just about squeezed through a gap and it slowed him down a little and probably cost him the stage, very unlucky.

The lack of a lead out was a huge factor.
