So, how are people getting on with the new service?
This is only the first twenty titles, but where should it go next?
Would you like to see classics continue to be released or, perhaps, some games that never got a release outside Japan?

No sign of the SNES games on my switch this morning yet.

Someone posted in the ninty direct thread that you can download from the news link, not straight from the store.

Edit: it's live under recent releases in the store. Doesn't look like it'll auto download.

Once Sunset Riders arrives I'll be happy, what are the chances?

I had to go into the Switch Online tab in the Eshop, in both the local and Japanese stores.
Now both Super Nintendo and Super Famicom games are living on my Switch!

Nope. Sub is required I think. It's one of the perks.

Played the first few levels of Yoshi's Island this morning. Played great.

No. the app checks with nintendo switch online (i think once a week) whether you have a subscription and the games can still be played.

Active online subscription is required. If it runs out, you'll lose access to NES and SNES games.

It's telling me i can download it with a trial of online. I got the 12 months with Twitch Prime so it's not a trial.

Pretty ****ty, nes used to work so this must be a change.

Super Aleste and Legend of the Mystical Ninja please...

oh and Batman Returns and Maximum Carnage for the hell of it even though they are probably crap now....

This happened to me when I first went on to it. Went back after a few mins and was able to download.

Played some Mario World. Plays really well, and the Rewind option is great. I am whistling Super Mario tunes now.

Similar to yourself. Wouldn't allow me select the download button until about 5 minutes after I first opened the page in store. Playing away now. Super tennis still holds up against modern tennis efforts.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,081 ✭✭✭Grumpypants

Working now. Am i right in thinking you can't download them so need to be online or does the app hold all the games? Can i play on an airplane ?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,035 ✭✭✭nedd

it is downloaded. Checks the license every week so needs to be online for that.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,891 ✭✭✭geotrig

As far as i've seen online ,they wont be monthly additions anymore ,just games added 2-3 times a year from now on..

Thanks for that! Kind of a shame, I liked the monthly reveal of new games. Hope this doesn't mean less games overall.

I was thinking of not continuing my Switch Online service as I had no interest in nes games, but this has totally changed my mind and will be paying for another year.

Some games I'd love to see on the service over the next year would be:

    - The Super Star Wars Trilogy
    - Donkey Kong Country
    - Chrono Trigger
    - Secret Of Mana
    - Super Castlevania
    - Mortal Kombat 2
    - Zombies Ate My Neighbours
    - Shadowrun
    - Earthworm Jim
    - Contra 3

Very unlikely that Street Fighter 2, Final Fantasy's or Mega Man games will ever come to the online service as those games can be bought seperately.

My guess is we won't see N64 games till at least September 2020.

I would suggest we try not to read too much into it, and wait and see how it develops over the next twelve months.
Perhaps the Famicom/Nes side of things is going to cool off, while the Super Famicom/Snes library will receive updates.
And, looking at the rest of the Twitter thread there, it seems that 3rd parties may restrict access to their precious IPs, preferring to sell them in other ways to the customers.
I can kinda see that, except that Nintendo have a vast, worth owning library on the Snes and I don't see supply being quite the issue that GSK does.
The list, as it stands, is dominated by Nintendo but with Jaleco, Data East and Capcom as well.
Lets see if Konami and Square/Enix jump in as too.

Some are already available via the likesw of the Konami collections, but the DCK games should be a certainty, as should the Super Star Wars games, man but the rewind and save state feature is going to be god-send there!
Nice to the similar Indiana Jones Trilogy game as well!

Also cool would be the Ninja Gaiden Trilogy as well as Buster Busts Loose the Mickey Mouse titles.

I don't think there will be much change to be honest adn supply will be ok tbh there is avast collection of games on snes and I'd rather a dumping a few games every few months than drip fed 1-2 a month.
I suppose it could make it easier with a good chunk of older ips being owned by 3rd parties now.

I’d love to see the Super Star Wars games or NBA Jam added at some point

Super Star Wars was the first video game to completely blow my mind back in the day as a teenager and I fell in love with my snes. Would love to see those again as soon as possible. Alien 3 was also a great action title.

Cdkeys are selling annual subscription codes for €16.50 at the moment. Small saving but a saving none the less.

I still have the original box for the first one complete with Virgin Megastore price tag - 53 old punts, the SNES games weren’t cheap!

Had an hour with the emulator today and it runs really well. I have gotten further in super ghouls and ghosts then I ever managed before with the help of the rewind feature;)

Anyway it's a great line up of games to start with. Super soccer is one I didn't expect to see their. I'm not s big football fan but it's a great game with a nice twist when you win the world cup.

£60 was the price of most games back then. When the N64 hit, I remember paying something like £79 for Turok.

There were a few cheaper titles like Mario Kart and F-Zero were priced around £39.99.

My biggest regret in life is not getting to play a link to the past when it was first released. It is mind blowing now. I could only imagine what it was like back then.

Only had a quick go of metroid and super Mario World but the games seem to play a lot better than they do on the snes mini.

I'm looking forward to the inevitable Digital Foundry video analysing the emulation.

Mess around with the settings you can select original, pixel perfect or CRT effect if you really want to feel like the real thing.

Super Tennis, the memories, took a few hours this evening to knock the rust off but I’ll enjoy playing this again. Still one of my all time favorite sports games

That and Ocarina are tied for my favourite game of all time. LttP on release was indeed mind blowing, it masters every single facet of game making/design. It still holds up beautifully today too.

Any updated thoughts on the Switch Online offering for SNES games? Has the library expanded much?

Also, if I get the individual option, can I play SNES games in a co-op with the kids? Where can I get an up to date list of games available as of now?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 55,571 ✭✭✭✭Mr E

    https://www.nintendo.com/switch/online-service/nes/ (List)

SNES is up to 34 games, NES is 55.

You can play co-op on games that support co-op.

Mini bump, but this is the best place for it. Interesting article on Gamespot -

Opinion: Deep cuts and obscure gems are nice, but Switch Online's NES and SNES libraries are still missing many games that defined those consoles.

    Link: https://www.gamespot.com/articles/nintendo-switch-onlines-library-will-never-feel-complete-without-big-third-party-games/1100-6491736/

Hard to argue with, to be honest. They are right - there are a ton of missing games on both consoles in the Switch Online app.
The 5 being added on Wednesday are pretty poor (apart from Joe & Mac - I have fond memories of that, but it could be rose tinted glasses) :o

The arcade version of Joe & Mac was great, don't think the home versions measured up to that, tbh.

Further evidence that at least Gameboy games are on the way.

  • Moderators, Category Moderators, Computer Games Moderators, Society & Culture Moderators Posts: 34,679 CMod ✭✭✭✭CiDeRmAn

I'm looking forward to some rarer stuff appearing from the Gameboy, I wonder if they'll add some Super Gameboy functionality, that would be fantastic, especially with Donkey Kong and Space Invaders on the GB.

  • Moderators, Arts Moderators, Regional Abroad Moderators Posts: 11,106 Mod ✭✭✭✭Fysh

It would be a sensible move to add more platforms to the online service, it's a bit barren at the minute. And I'd like to see what GBC games they add as I never played any of them. But this is still rumour territory, one guy from Eurogamer's twitter feed or not...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 29,549 ✭✭✭✭CastorTroy

If there are games designed for 40 or 50 inch screens, Gameboy games have to be them

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,846 ✭✭✭SuperBowserWorld

You could probably fit all the decent gameboy games into one 4k screen ...

    (3840 x 2160) / (160×144) = 360

Yes, and plenty of room for the not so good ones 😊

NES & Super NES - March 2022 Game Updates - Nintendo Switch Online

Three additional classic NES and Super NES games are now live for Nintendo Switch Online members. Earthworm Jim 2, Dig Dug II & Mappy Land.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,997 ✭✭✭Mr.Saturn

Putting up Earthworm Jim 2 and not one is obviously a case of them just getting whatever's available and cost-effective, but it does feel a bit like trolling. **** games are one thing but a **** sequel to a good game is always unforgivable.

  • Moderators, Category Moderators, Computer Games Moderators, Society & Culture Moderators Posts: 34,679 CMod ✭✭✭✭CiDeRmAn

I always felt that Earthworm Jims natural home was on the Megadrive...
