    I am a 69 year old male, thanks to a motorbike accident years ago plus poor brushing i have only 6 teeth left . they are all on the lower jaw. One broke off 2 days ago level with the gum line -- arg . the dentist said it was caused by the metal denture.

    He asked whether i was in pain and i was not so he said leave it and get the denture extended. he did not want to extract it as it would loosen the tooth beside it.

    Now 5 days later it hurts and i am fed up. I want to get them all out and get a lower denture. i feel it is time.

    so who do i go to? is it a dentist or dental surgeon and if the latter do i ask the dentist for a referral.

    thanks Nick

    Dentist = Dental Surgeon

    An Oral Surgeon is a dentist who has extra training as a surgical specialist.

    Your general dentist will advise if you need to see a specialist.

    First thing is first, go get the painful tooth sorted.. Circumstances have changed now that it is hurting you.

    There is a big difference going from something like a metal partial denture to a lower full denture. Consider carefully! The upper full dentures often are much much more retentive than the lower ones.
