What is the deal with Greta Thunberg getting so much media coverage?

Nowhere near old enough to have a real world view, but plenty coverage anyway.

Does someone that age understand that if suddenly every country decides to go Green and ban things like Plastics, or Petrol and Diesel powered vehicles, then hundreds of thousands of people will be unemployed?
Will her and her family be funding the re-training of all those victims of fashionable trends?

Are my ramblings way off center?

    Opinions please?

They're worthwhile goals to aim for - and anyone who thinks otherwise is either a fucking idiot or a sociopath. Doesn't mean they have to be achieved overnight (not least because I'd have no way of getting to work in the morning).

i'd imagine the thinking is that she has more sincerity and less baggage than the Hollywood stars who usually fulfil this ambassadorial role.

The idea of Hollywood stars is that they already have people's attention and they're diverting the attention to a good cause. The only attention this girl has is what they're giving her.

I think it's stupid, as someone who is strongly in favour of environmentalism.

It will get the media outlets 'teh likes and shares' because it's a young girl fighting for the environment, and she happens to have aspergers so extra feels there. Everyone loves to put someone else as their spokesperson for matters they actually don't really care about but pretend to in order to get more of those said likes and shares.

If you listen to the girls' speeches when they're not scripted she's very average, she sounds like you would expect from an 11 year old. And no, it's not that we should only listen to the people who speak the best, but it would seem to make sense that if they're going to put a girl of this age forward she should at least be... good... in some way.

Hundreds of thousands wouldn't lose their jobs because there'd be transitioning and retraining into new, green, jobs.

All she’s doing is asking people to not wreck the place and reduce their CO2 outputs. I really don’t understand all the hostility towards her. Is it just because she’s telling you something you don’t want to hear or what?

The simple reality of it is we either reduce or impact and try to live with the environment instead of just abusing it or we’re all going to be a hell of a lot worse off.

I suppose though it’s a bit like the people who dump their tents at festivals and see nothing wrong with leaving rubbish on the beach - the “I’ve had my fun and that’s all that matters” brigade. She’s trying to make us think about what we’re doing and she’s successful driving publicity and make a point.

Seriously take a look at yourselves!

A green job? What is that?

The pictures of the girl's mam and dad really caught my eye - I found them quite enlightening on this freakish disturbing kid and the media attention being lavished on her. Family all wearing a political phrase tshirts is very revealing.

She is a 16 yr old who dropped out of school to do full time activism.

When asked why she didn't STAY in school to study climate change she said
She said she did not go to school to become a climate scientist or study climate engineering solutions, as some suggested, because the science was done and only denial, ignorance, and inaction remained

She is a 16 yr old who is trying to educate the world when she doesn't even have a high school education.

The result is she keeps speaking to crazy alt right people as if they deserve credibility.

She basically quit school to be an activist.
Does someone that age understand that if suddenly every country decides to go Green and ban things like Plastics, or Petrol and Diesel powered vehicles, then hundreds of thousands of people will be unemployed?

She should she is older than she looks she is 16. I would say this is something she does because she doesn't like school.

She also has some developmental issues. I don't want to knock her for them. But she seems to relate more to climate then people.

She also doesn't seem to understand the process of climate change. Her speeches are just a lot of creative rhetoric.

But then she is only 16. Who could write that at 16.

But she will be 18 in two yrs. And with no education. I would worry for her future.

I knew an aul hippy who lived in a tree in the Glen o the Downs to prevent the road being built or something. Funny thing was he drank cider from plastic bottles and then burned the empty ones.

Not sure if he wore bootcut jeans though ?

    Bye.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,211 ✭✭✭✭ILoveYourVibes

She is a very exploited child. Adults and the media are using her. Campaigns have been found using her name without permission.

Also she hasn't inspired mass school strikes over climate change they were already happening.

At 25 without a degree an education its not going to be so impressive.

Her mom is an opera singer (which means she is deeply emotional unhinged). :P kidding!

I really hope she is being guided by a selfless wise adult.

In terms of the topic climate change. Without China and the USA ...its useless.

In terms of her going on a yacht with zero experience. I hope she is ok.

Though to be fair the religion / 'god speed' bit might be irrelevant - the family are atheists afaik...
