Please report that PM so the sender can be banned and the IP potentially blocked.

Thread moved to the Help Desk.

Boards is experiencing a spam attack at the moment, with lots of users receiving unsolicited messages.

The tech team are working on a solution, but in the meantime, please don't click on any of the links.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4 tonytrouble

So today I got a scam email wanting me to view nude pictures of the sender. of course I did not click on any links but the strange thing is that the sender was shown as boards.ie. it was sent to an old email address that was compromised in a data breach several years ago. I am new to boards.ie so my question is how does an email appear to be sent from boards.ie

I didn't realise you can use the site to send out emails and I am presuming that this must have been sent to the whole list of compromised email addresses and not to me in particular.

Any helpful information would be welcome.

The site came under some form of attack yesterday with people receiving PM's from new accounts and others may have received emails. I understand it is now under control and there might be an announcement shortly. Don't click on any links.

Ok thank you. Where do I go to receive updates on the progress of your investigation.

I don't have an active role to play in this as I'm just a volunteer mod on the site. I'm not sure what if any type of investigation will be made but if you have any further concerns then first of all see the post by Boards full time employee, Mark, here and then if necessary ask a question there. Hope that helps

    Hi Anna,

I’ve merged your thread into a pre-existing thread as it relates to the same topic.

Last night Boards experienced a wave of new account sign ups who soon starting spam PMs. The PM would have triggered an automated email notification.

The tech team have done great work to delete & remove these spam PMs, but we cannot delete the emails that users have received. Hence, you are seeing a email but there is no private message.

Obviously it goes without saying that you should not click on any links in the PM.

Hope this helps, let me know if you have further questions.

    Hi doughef,

Could you please PM me with the text of the email? This should include a username, which would be associated with that email address.

I got those nude cosplay messages too and every time I enter boards.ie I get a page saying my browser is being checked.

Is that boards.ie ensuring I'm not a spammer?

That's the security layer of Cloudflare checking your access attempt.

The site itself is fine, it's the links to an external site being sent via spam PMs that can't be trusted.

@linpoo - I’ve moved your thread to the Help Desk and merged it with the existing thrasconnthis topic.

We’ve had another wave of these spam PMs overnight. The guys will clean it up once they hit the office and we’ll continue to work on preventing these muppets.

Most important thing is NOT to click on the link. Report the PM by clicking on the little triangle at the top right of the message

Hi all, this thread popped up on my homepage. I've just posted in the Announcements forum which hopefully addresses any questions, but if you have anything else to ask please let me know.
    Hi all,

Over the last couple of days, there have been users spamming explicit Private Messages containing a suspicious link. As is standard practice, an automated email is sent from boards.ie (no-reply@boards.ie) to users to alert them of a new Private Message, which contains a preview of the message.

The Admins and the dev team have been working hard to try to keep on top of things and ban these users and delete the PMs that they have sent (but it is not possible to delete the sent emails).

Do not click on the link sent in the email/Private Message. If you open a message on the Legacy Site that seems suspicious, please report it by clicking on the little warning triangle in the top right corner of a message. You can also raise awareness of a profile that is sending unsolicited PMs via the Spammer Notification Thread.

It is possible to turn off email notifications for private messages via the User Control Panel under Private Messaging.

    487912.PNG

We would like to reassure users that there has not been a data breach. This is the Private Messaging service being abused and the email notification system working as it ordinarily does.

In light of these issues, Cloudflare security has been ramped up. Unfortunately, while we're trying to strike a balance, some innocent users are being caught up in these measures and encountering issues accessing the site or certain features. With Cloudflare and technical issues occurring, it may be wise to copy posts before you attempt to publish them, just in case.

We have also gotten questions about the now unsupported app. When Cloudflare ramps up, it seems that the app is no longer able to access the data that it needs to function. While these issues are ongoing, we recommend using touch.boards.ie for mobile browsing.

We apologise for the disruption and hope that normal service can resume soon.

I too like Golfwidow received the same message...

    Can it be removed?

In general, could a spam button be added to the inbox, to help boardies report messages like these??

    Threads merged.

Boards are working to delete all spam PMs behind the scenes. Please bear with us as this is taking some time.

You can report spam PMs by clicking the little triangle with exclamation mark when viewing the message.

    Hi

I got a pm from the above user directing me to other site.
    Might be worth checking out.

Is it not possible to implement a post count restriction for private messages? Max PMs per day limit?

Assume I got one of these PMs as I have a notification beside my username but no PM in my inbox. Can't clear the notification either.

I think that may be being looked at, but creates an issue with the likes of "Talk To" where users may sign up with a specific query but need to send information such as account details privately

Aye, I'm sure you have it all in hand. Hadn't even thought of Talk to forums to be honest

As a Cmod, I occasionally send a PM reminder to all mods of the 32 forums in the Science, Health & Environment category. Not sure what other Cmods do, but please do not put a daily PM limit on Cmods of less than 75. When sending these PMs to category mods, I have to sometimes exchange replies with them too. Plus we may have other PM exchanges on the same given day (DRPs, member questions, etc.). Besides, a PM spammer would probably send hundreds.
