Considering switching to eir vision

We have fttc - gives us a very stable 90Mb. Currently Vodafone are our ISP.

Thinking of switching to an eir bundle. Only a 12 month contract. And includes eir sport for pretty much what we're paying Vodafone just for BB.

Has anyone any experience of eir vision? What's it like? Reliable and responsive or slow and buggy?

Have Vodafone tv which is rubbish. Frequent pauses when watching tv. UI on the box is terrible. Also FTTH which you would think wouldnt be good. Im guessing eir is similar. The brother did have it and he got rid of if. Not too sure why though as i never asked.

Id prefer freesat tv and good broadband but the missus insists on having paid tv so she can watch all of one or two channels a behind the paywall a couple of times a week. Madness :D

We have freesat/saorview with Netflix and nowtv so no real issues with content.. (sport aside)..

The current eir bundle is only 5 euro a month more than what we pay Vodafone currently for BB so was thinking if the eir vision box was half reasonable it wasn't a huge cost to pay for some sport..

But I don't want some laggy clunky piece of crap when it's not truly needed..

Don't do it. Don't do it. Don't do it. Don't do it!!!

I have it currently and it's terrible. Buggy as hell. Prone to freezing. Prone to glitches. Recordings don't work right. Service often drops for days at a time.

I've had Eir look at it maybe 5 times now, nothing has ever improved.

And eir set aside 20mb of your Eir Fibre for the tv "service". So of you're signing up to 100mb, what you get is 80mb with 20 partitioned off and not useable, whether you're using the tv service or not

Yeah but if it’s evfectively free tv and the expectation isn’t high then why not?

The Eir box, and their service is not great btw.

I could really just leave it as an iptv box for eir sport.. I'll not be arsed with recording or anything like that.

But their BB would have to be reliable.

I wouldn’t say the broadband would be any better/worse than what you have.

Pretty much the same just a different name. I find Vodafone BB poor at times. Yesterday morning it dropped out on us four times in half an hour. We are waiting for Virgin Media to finalise their set up where we are and we will change to them.

The lag in the Vodafone service is annoying alright. At times it can freeze altogether and you would have to change channel and go back to have it normal again. No good when watching live sport.

Our VF BB hasn't missed a beat in two years. So maybe it's more to do with underlying physical infrastructure than the provider!?

Don't have tv with VF though.

Really? Thats mad as we have had issues. They even sent us out a new router. We are ftth so there are no contention issues either. Strange one so.

Just bang your head really hard. Hopefully you get concussion and forget about moving to Eir.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 24,560 ✭✭✭✭lawred2

I see that BT sport is gone from eir sport now anyway so the justification for taking a chance on eir is even more diminished.

    Think I'll leave it.

I don't know anyone that has enjoyed thÉir experience. Usual complaints around amount/quality of channels and abysmal customer service which I can attest to when ringing on someone's behalf. I may as well have went out to the kitchen and consulted the fridge-freezer. The square-root of clueless.

Internet seems serviceable if you're not doing anything strenuous on it.

We've fttc though so it's probably not a fair comparison

If you switch to eir use a chromecast for eir sports. Don't bother with eir vision.

yeah I saw that but is there anything worth watching left on Eir sport now without BT sports?

They also have LOI games and have covered Dundalks European games.

And FA Cup 3pms and BBC fixtures, when they decide to show them that is (they slipped off the schedule a bit last year because of other things they were showing). And a couple of other events that, like the FA Cup, they don’t hold exclusivity on and you may take or leave on that point - The Masters, Wimbledon, and the French Open. Viewers on Eir Broadband and eir Vision get FreeSports too (again your mileage may vary on whether there’s much worth watching there, but you may see some MLS, NHL and NASCAR if that’s your thing).

I have evision for over 3 years - I have had no issues and just recontracted with eir for bb telephone (talk mobile world) and basic evision for €65 a month for 12 months (12 month contract)

We've had Eir for the past year (sports driven) but going back to Virgin Media.

In comparing to VM, the box is much zippier than Horizon, the ability to quickly browse up through the channels (now/next) is well implemented and very snappy - nowhere near Sky of course, but much better than VM. Wife hated the messy set up of Eir, boxes / wires in the hall etc.

After that, there's not much more I could recommend - one feature with VM that we missed a lot (although didn't think we would) was the ability to 'play from start' on a number of channels directly from the EPG. Lack of netflix integration, ondemand/catch up, music channels and sky channels also very much a drawback to Eir.

I would say we had the fibre to the home installed, and found Eir's broadband to be terrific actually - very stable.

Glad to be going back to VM, if only they could sort out that Horizon box.

Historically What made evision worth it was for the sake of €15 pm you got the eir/bt sports package in hd. So in terms of price nothing could top that / alas with bt gone the same value isn’t there anymore / as per previous posts the platform would not be a patch on sky q but then that’s much more expensive

Thinking of signing up to eir vision
Would that be a wise move?

As a platform for €15 extra a month on top of your phone and BB you get Eir Sport 1 and 2 in HD and Virgin Media Sport included in the basic package its hard to beat.

I've had VF broadband for 5 years and just about to re sign for another 12 months, not a glitch seriously in that length of time, except when the router calved and got a new one in post in 24 hours , that was only issue. I have fibre to cabinet, 90 mb speed. I also had VF tv, which never gave a problem in the 18 months I had it, only got rid of tv, when they downgraded the BBC channels from HD to SD ( they are back now in HD as a premium add on ).

Just to add my bb phone and tv with eir is 59€ pm for 12 months (12 month contract)

Last week I added BT sport and PS in hd for an extra €19.99 pm for six months

    It's an interesting one.

I had a nightmare getting it set up when I first moved into the house, that was 4 years ago. But I had the TV in 2 rooms (all channels - with the exception of sky sports & movies), Broadband and 2 mobile phones looped into it for 140 a Month. I will say I've never had an issue with the TV package. Broadband is also very stable. The issue with Eir is the supplied router is horrendous. If you do go with it, be prepared to shell out an extra 100 EUR for a decent router, to ship wifi around the house.

In saying that it's that time of the year, when I am out of contract with Eir and I look for other packages, I have found that if you talk to them when coming out of contract also, (And I know there is a forum for this) but the cancellation or loyalty deals you get are decent.

On my investigation at the moment, it looks like you cannot purchase TV with them at the moment as they have a message advising something new is coming - not sure what this is, but I will hold off myself on moving/renewing until we see what comes from this.

When you click on the eir vision website, this is what you get, so you're right, something new seems to be coming for eir tv. Anyone heard any rumours?

No just from independent article. Parent company have a box in France that does well it also says not sure if related though to Thursday release

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 32,136 ✭✭✭✭is_that_so

I've had it for about three years now and have no complaints. The box went about four months ago and they replaced it within 2 days. Bummer about BT but Virgin at least cover some of the football.

    https://www.digitaltveurope.com/2018/12/04/free-unveils-next-generation-box-with-netflix-at-no-extra-cost/

The above seems to be the version in France. Netflix is integrated.

    This is also mentioned -
'For ADSL subscribers, Freebox Delta can offer combined internet access via DSL and 4G mobile technology in what Free boss Xavier Niel described as “a revolution” for those not able to sign up for fibre-based broadband.'

It might be attractive to Virgin subscribers.

There seems to be plenty of choice from the parent company in France - could be a game changer here
