I think most people aren't worried about towing the line when it comes to grammer, for all intensive purposes they just play it by year.

Why does this annoy people so much?

You can’t hear it? It’s not that common in text. I seen is more common in speech and writing and is much worse.

People, particularly journalists and writers who should know better, who say "amount of" people/things/events/places etc. It's number of. Basic stuff.
We use amount of with uncountable nouns. Number of is used with countable nouns:

We use a huge amount of paper in the office every day.

The amount of time it took to finish the job was very frustrating.

A great number of students volunteer each year for environmental projects.

Not: A great amount of students volunteer …

I have a number of things I want to talk to you about. (Source)

Furthermore, "begs the question" does not mean, and never has meant, "poses the question" no matter how many journalists waffling on the radio give the impression that it does. It just doesn't.
