The whole situation is retarded. That IPCC report states all this stuff, and then adds in that there'll be an extra 2 billion people by mid century.

Golly gosh! Where is the real problem, I wonder? Oh if only some super genius could figure it out!!

The harsh solution, and ONLY solution, is that a whole load of people are going to have to go. A 75% reduction at least.

"please eat a tomato to save planet earth"...bullshoite.

Another touchy feely, useless non-solution to a very real and imminent problem.

The writing is on the wall and you can't avoid reality forever.

Classic move to enfeeble the population so we cannot resist their new world order.

Waiting on a commitment from UN to travel more by train and sea instead of flights. One flight has same footprint as 200 beef dinners.

Beef from under ten miles away vs avocado from the other side of the world. Can someone square that circle please?

I’m not hating on avocados however draw a ten mile circle around your home and demonstrate how one can achieve a rounded plant based diet. I’m genuinely asking. P.S. I’m from Mullingar it’s beef to the heels around here!

Plus I expect big difference in footprint of mostly grass fed beef and lamb in Ireland v grain feed lot in Argentina

The UN is correct, and anybody who uses that most Tory and Thatcherite of terms, "nanny state", to describe whenever a state/international organisation interferes in the free market is really not doing themselves any favours. To a Tory any interference that keeps an eye on their business practices would naturally be unwelcome/derided as "nanny state". When tabloid readers, however, parrot them that's all a bit cringe.

Spot on - or the nonsense where flowers are being imported from Africa only to go off 2 days later.

Once the air-miles for frivolous reasons is curtailed, then I'll start taking them seriously.

And why are the EU planning on importing Brazilian beef anyway when we have plenty of locally sourced meat on this side of the Atlantic?

The UN is full of pompous, pontificating, pretentious pricks, don't do as I do but do as I say. Wasting resources to trot out some verbal diarrhea on how to save on vital resources. I hope they choke on the ironery.

Sick of all this climate nonsense now. Every other day they trying to make people feel guilty for living your life. Maybe if they addressed the real issue of the unsustainable population of the planet I'd care but all this is a pure money grab. Most Irish couples can't afford to have a couple of kids yet they are breeding like rabbits in places like Africa and India.

A lot of land we have is suitable for grass not crops. Some of it probably could be switched over to crops.

Concreting over it wont help with emissions either.

Humans contribute something like ten thousands of one percent to CO2.
The claim is this extra bit adds up,it is a relatively weak greenhouse gas however. But there is a theory that it helps the greening of the planet through extra photosynthesis.

The pressure valve for unsustainable populations is migration. No incentive to change as long as "emptier" countries are absorbing the overflow.

Too many people creating too much demand for everything.

It's clear as day where this is headed, and no amount of trendy trollocks is going to stop it.

Yes. I blame the UN for their efforts at combating disease and spreading peace. Let Ebola loose and let India and Pakistan have at it over Kashmir.

yes we do f**k africa asia india brazil and almost every 3rd world country as they supply meat fruits and everything we need half a globe away just that they could buy some soy or whatever banana leafs. its a good logic when you sit in these councils making near 200k a year to give these wise opinions.

I like the user who suggested those in favor of such ideas should be on trail for month to forage and grow their own food to sustain in given radius they live in, pretty sure all those ideas would die off fast with them.

Imported avocados and nuts etc still have a far less environmental impact on the Earth than meat.
I don't get the freak out over being told to eat less meat, if it's good for the planet.
Also we export 90% of our beef and dairy, yet complaining about importing some meat into Europe?
But sure we've been over this a million times on this site and by the looks of things we're not going to be eating any less meat any time soon, so it's pointless talking about it. Don't worry, if anything you'll be eating more and more meat by the looks of things.

I don't understand how science hasn't intervened yet by creating some sort of environmentally friendly food. Something that can be made in bulk at very little cost and available to all. Like I don't know some hybrid grain or an artificial meat or something. 3D printers have been revolutionary in terms of what they can do.

And maybe if these billionaires stopped their dick measuring contest over space tourism pioneerism and used their wealth to fund global food solutions, it would be a lot more worthy too.

Well has the guilt made you change anything about your life to help the environment? Im guessing not by your attitude, so stop complaining about it then if you dont care about it

An african or indian child will use a fraction of the resources an irish child does during their lifetime. They could have 5-10 times more children than irish people and their countries would only then use similar amounts of resources per capita. But their population growth should absolutely be halted, in order to increase quality of life in those places and reduce many other problems associated with over population

Never realised grass fed beef was as bad as it is! However my point still stands it will cost a carbon fortune to feed me in Mullingar a rounded diet.

Now I'm not a total asshole, I cut back, go veggy twice a week.

i buy irish meat exclusively. veg where possible. i have reduced my meat intake recently.

A load of that is crap, they bring it into the country and hold it for 30 days and it becomes "a product of Ireland" or you shake a fistful of bread crumbs on a chicken breast and once again "a product of the EU". Did you ever eat "Irish smoked salmon" or "smoked Irish Salmon"? Another con is Equine Beef, the con is still going on.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,786 ✭✭✭wakka12

If its for improved health they're probably right, if its for the environment id be skeptical

Well meat isnt bad for you by any stretch. It contains several absolutely essential nutrients that are hard to find in plants, and a few that are impossible to get from plants. And chicken and turkey are certainly not bad for you.

The only poor health outcomes from meat eating are generally related to eating burnt or overcooked meat, eating highly processed and cured high salt meats, and over consumption of red meats is associated with some higher risk of contracting certain cancers. Thats it really, eating some high quality grass fed beef or chicken, boiled or steamed rather than fried, baked or bbq'd, from time to time will do more good for your health than bad, and is a much better idea for dinner than many other things people in the west eat regularly
