    Hi

Herself already has a 2011 ix35. It’s a 1.7 diesel. No bother with it since we got it 5 years ago, just service and tyres and away she goes.
She likes it but is looking to upgrade.
The only car she wants is a 2016 Tucson, nothing less, nothing more.

    Are these cars ok?
I know there are loads on the road and the most sold car for certain years etc.
    Just wondering if reliable.

Do they have a belt or chain?

Mechanically they’re the same as the ix35.

So a fairly reliable car so. Well for me so far.

But in general any bad stories.

Same gearbox worries. Basically the Tucson is a slightly more refined, slightly better to drive ix35

    What are the gearbox worries?

They can often fail. Same with the ix, i40 etc.

    Oh ok. Hadn’t heard

    Is it a widespread issue?
    Expensive to fix?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 73,522 ✭✭✭✭colm_mcm

It should be covered on warranty most of the time.

Had a 2016 Exec. 1.7D for two years.
No issues with it really, fuel economy not great, 6.7L/100. Practically all motorway driving.
Nicely kitted out & never put a foot wrong mechanically

Think my wifes 2011 iX35 is heading towards that gearbox fail....drove it yesterday and it's getting hard to tell whether it's in first or third gear. Gotta take it in and out of gear a few times to get it into first. Not all the time. Just saw this thread now.

Does the newer Tucson also have this gearbox issue. I know it was alluded to earlier, but just double checking.

Thanks. Doesn’t seem to be very widespread though. There are thousands of these Tucson’s on the road and this issue hopefully only affects a certain small percentage of them..........

Nice car - I never owned one.
THe only advice I could give is to purchase from a Hyundai Authorised Dealer to get the remainder of the warranty..............from their website it seems the warranty only transfers to the new owner if car is purchased from a Hyundai Authorised Dealer

    https://www.hyundai.ie/warranty-general

Please note that only cars sourced through Hyundai Cars Ireland Ltd. and purchased through a Hyundai Authorised Dealer qualify for the 5 year triple care package

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 73,522 ✭✭✭✭colm_mcm

That just means new cars that were sold by Hyundai dealers here get 5 year warranty which incidentally is transferable.

  • Banned (with Prison Access) Posts: 2,943 ✭✭✭from_atozinc

    So overall, not too bad.

I know if you ask about any car it can have issues.

This one seems to have some gearbox issues, but doesn’t seem rife.

Does anyone know which would be the better option here. Year 2016.

    1. A UK “Premium” Spec
    2. An Irish “Executive” Spec

  • Banned (with Prison Access) Posts: 2,943 ✭✭✭from_atozinc

    Another q.

I know cars in Ireland get the NCT done after 4 years and then every 2 years, then after 10 years, every year. So a 2016 would be 2020, 2022, 2024, 2026, 2027 etc.

If a car was registered in the *UK* in March 2016 and brought in to Ireland today, is the NCT due in March 2020?

It's the 4th anniversary of it's original registration date. So if it were first registered in the UK in March 2016 then it would be due it's first NCT here in March 2020.

Ah ok. Thought I read something before about UK cars having to get a fresh NCT as soon as they were registered in Ireland.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 51,364 ✭✭✭✭bazz26

That's cars that are 4 years or older being imported. And these days if they have a valid MOT you can swap the remaining time on the MOT for a valid NCT.

are they 'supposed' to last the lifetime of the car?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 73,522 ✭✭✭✭colm_mcm

Yes, and to be fair they don’t give trouble with chains.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,390 ✭✭✭Cordell

Lifetime means that there is no prescribed changing interval for the timing chain, not that it will last forever :)
Just as there is no specified interval for the crankshaft.

I've a 2016 Exec spec Tucson, absolutely no issue so far.
For service interval they recommend 30k/2y for service with a free check in between at every 15k/1y. I'm not comfortable going 30k or 2 years with the same oil, so I asked for an oil change at every free health check.

Ive been in a Uk registered 2016 Tucson where obviously the Speedometer is in miles (with km in smaller writing)

on the dash, I know you can get to a digital readout of your speed which shows up in MPH, I changed the units to KM and was expecting the dash readout to be in KM, but was still in MPH, turned car off and on etc this was done quickly before a test drive so didnt have much time to play around with it.

Anyone know if the digital readout on UK registered Tuscon can be changed to KM?

Probably it's very little help, but on Irish ones you can have the central display in mph. Maybe you didn't change it properly?

thanks, at least that is something...... on an Irish car with KPH as the speedo, you can change to miles.

seemed fairly simple, I just changed the units on main touch screen to KM, but maybe it has to be done somewhere else too.

maybe has to be done on steering wheel controls too, im not sure.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,390 ✭✭✭Cordell

Yes, that's it, you need to use the steering wheels controls, on the main screen you change it only for the satnav.

ah ok, was messing around with steering wheel too and for the life of me though, I could not find anything to do with units or charging from mph to km etc. do you happen to know what menu it falls under?

Man, sorry, I just returned from the car, I couldn't find it! It's only fuel economy that can be changed from l/100km or km/l and various units for the tyre pressure.
Either I miss remember or it went away with some software update. I hope it's the latter...

How do you avail of the free health check for the Hyundai Tucson?

I purchased a hyundai tucson 2018 in the north so imported it.

Thanks. Strange question. Is it a hard job to
Remove wind deflectors from a 2016 Tucson?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,390 ✭✭✭Cordell

Are they factory fitted? I don't think so...
I had them on a car installed by previous owner, removing them was just a matter of pulling them out.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 73,522 ✭✭✭✭colm_mcm

Depends on how they’re attached. Some just sit in the window runners but some are actually stuck onto the door frame with foam taped these might be tricky to get off and clean up. Think they’re usually stuck on.
I’d also be wary of a car with them fitted as smokers like them. That’s not to say all cars with them have smokers in them but it’s something to look for.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,390 ✭✭✭Cordell

If the car is clean and does'n smell who cares if the previous owner was a smoker? Smoking is not a contagious disease :)

If the previous owner was a smoker, the car smells. There is no getting rid of it.

Because you’ll see the car in it’s just valeted stage, the smell will be masked. It won’t be gone.
If that’s something the OP would not like then it’s very relevant. It’s very hard to totally eliminate smoke smell, and some people are very sensitive to the smell.

A decent looking 2016 has come up near me.

It has 19 inch wheels. Anyone know what the ride quality is like on these? Harsh over speed bumps etc?

I presume these tyres are more expensive to replace also?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 73,522 ✭✭✭✭colm_mcm

    Is it in Mooney’s?

    No.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 73,522 ✭✭✭✭colm_mcm

Oh ok. Was gonna say I’d aim for executive spec over comfort spec. I know some comfort models ironically have 19” wheels.

I haven’t driven one with 19s but you would be right in saying the tyres are way more expensive.
