Some nice cars coming into view now with classic tax, I'd be seriously tempted by a 6 cyclinder BMW E34.

Vehicles registered in 1989 are now 30 years old and qualify for "Vintage" or classic motor tax just like any other one registered before that year.

I have 3 cars now with €56 a year tax. I only need another 9 years before my 2.8 becomes €56

How does the insurance stack up on those classics?

Loads of great older cars now in that bracket. Some are reasonably affordable and others are a joke.

All budget depending, but I'd be looking at an early R32 GT-R :)

€350 for the year for them all. They are all on limited mileage policies (4k miles per year) which is fine.

I think with some fairly modern cars now becoming 30 yo it might only be a matter of time before this rule starts to be abused !

In the meantime, the 56yoyo tax and the 20 yoyo insurance (top up to my existing classic insurance ) means there was literally no good reason my wife could say no to my latest yoke !

He mentions in the advert that it will come taxed and tested so I presume you wouldn't have to worry about it

Those wheels in the 535 look like Chinese knockoffs of Throwing Stars. Terrible. I'm sure you'd forget about that though every time you push that right pedal.

They do look a bit funny..the style 23 (M Contour) wheels came first day on some of the e36 M3..

They are called contours not throwing stars. The stars came on the M5 not the M3. The contours came on the M3 evolution.

I have a 99 3 series, only 10 years to go... there can be a massive price premium on the over 30 cars.

My thoughts exactly.. as soon as a car qualifies for cheap tax, it triples in asking price.. motor tax being a thing ruins the second hand and classic market to some extent.

It would have to be JDM. 1st gen or early 2nd gen MR2. Silvia S13, 180SX etc.

I like the C4 Corvette too, classic boxy 80s interior.

I hope you mean "used", rather than "abused" ;). Don't forget they'll still have to be NCT'ed regularly....not like my 2 pre '80 yokes :D.

You should buy one now as an investment. I'm sure the price will go through the roof when the tax goes down to 56 for the current outrageous 110 pa

Might be an idea though. At least it looks like electricity will still be available in 21 years.
Petrol will probably sold by the cc to specially licenced persons only :D.

Whats the story with getting insurance for an over thirty year old car? Does it depend on the insurer or is there some kind of stipulation that all 30+ cars are cheaper to insure regardless of the insurer? Are all cars over 30 years considered classic? I've got a 1995 Rover with genuine only 70,000 miles on the clock. Only reason I stopped driving it was because my insurance went up from 340 to 980 overnight. When I enquired about it they said the premium went up because it was now over 20 years old.

Your car isn't 30 years old yet, so who knows what's gonna happen when it is???

980 is not the worst quote I heard when your car is so "unique" ;)

Yeah, another 6 years to go. That insurance bump pissed me off though. Just over 70,000 miles on the clock and it still (at the time) had a full NCT. But haven't driven it in almost 4 years. I'm just wondering is it worth hanging onto for another 6 years. It's got a Honda Accord engine in it.

It would only be cheaper on a Classic Policy. you would need an Insurance Policy on a 'modern' Car to avail of this. Also there are a limited number of Insurers offering a Classic Policy.
As regards the year it depends on the Car. Normally anything over 30 years old would be eligible, but there are also other Cars which would be considered "Classic" at even 15 years old....normally more exotic (or just rarer) stuff.

BTW if it's a Civic based Rover I wouldn't bother. The equivalent Civic isn't even worth much....and the Rover clone is worth even less.

Ah, right, so it depends on the insurer then. I'm with Axa now but the previous insurer was AIG. I'll have to give Axa a ring and see what they say.

AFAIK unlike vintage which is always 30 years or older and qualifies for a lower motor tax rate a classic cars can be any age really and depends on the insurance company. In every offering of classic insurance I know of you need a full policy on sometime more modern also.

This is what axa offers for classic insurance
If your classic car is +25 years old, and you already insure a private car, then you’re eligible for our Classic Car Insurance. We offer 3 levels of cover – Comprehensive, Third Party Fire & Theft or Third Party Only.

R129 - last nice looking SL IMHO. Launched in LHD in summer 1989, not so sure when they were first delivered in RHD, but there will be a few coming on the market in the next 2 years or so.
