It's to emphasis the hip and waist area and to subtely indicate child-bearing ability. It's a psychological hereditary thing passed on from generations ago when this is what men looked for in a woman.

Yes, I know kids probably do it as well, but that's because they're imitating adults.

Everything I don't like is either woke or fascist - possibly both - pick one.

They think it helps you look more put together in photos. Like you know what you are doing.

I don't know what i am doing so i dont do it.

I look like a spare in photos. Unless its my stripping portfolio that's totally awesome.

    Accentuates the hips.

Probably similar to how men fold arms across chest or hold hands behind their back. Folded arms make the chest look bigger relative to the waist. Arms behind back makes a clean V shape from shoulders to hips.

Maybe the arm is fatter than the other one, so making it look skinnier keeps them in sync?

I read somewhere that photographers tell women, bend everything. Elbows. Knees.

Funny story. I just googled "crooked wife" (as in the nursery rhyme), and a picture of Ivanka Trump came up. :D

From an article on the web-
Holding your arms down squishes them against your body, making them appear wider. Placing your hand on your hip is an easy way to stop the squish, says Ginger Burr, founder of Total Image Consultants. If that looks too posed for you, keep your arms at your sides without resting them down. “Let there be a little space between your body and your arm,” says Burr. If you’re having trouble making it look natural, start with your hand on your hip and then bring it back down. Your shoulder will fall back, making it easy to create the space you want.

You angle your body so that the hand on the hip is facing the camera and the one down by your body is facing away from the camera

I’m too old to care about this - but it’s a ‘thing’ in celebrity and hun world.

Their pockets are too small to put them in

Two of my sisters have a "pose". They're twins.

They've obviously gone through their photos at some point, and worked out what pose they need to do to look their best in a picture. They don't put their hands on their hips, but there are specific postures and gestures, and the hair must be falling over this shoulder, and so on. It's all very complex, and you have to follow their strict instructions with lights and angle.

My favourite is when they try to make it look candid.

Yes, I'm sure all your friends believe you read the Times, Sadhbh. Doing the Crosaire with your make up on is it?

Not necessarily. He might just be looking into a field or at livestock. It's a thinking man's pose in that context. You can even use both hands.

I'm a guy so my clothes usually have pockets for me to stick my hands into when I don't have anything else to do with them. If I was wearing something with pockets, I'd probably either have my arms folded or I'd end up resting them on my hips.

Since a lot of women's clothing doesn't have hip pockets, and arms folded pose probably looks too defensive (or some other body language pop culture ****) then hand on hip seems to make sense.

Some poses get a bit laughable though, as shown in this wonderful pastiche : https://lifestyle.clickhole.com/here-comes-dolores-with-her-new-hat-and-she-looks-good-1825121163

I find it even more bizarre when women in photos put their hand on the stomach of the man next to them (usually their significant other). It's almost like a possessive thing or somehow suggesting the man is pregnant.

I find it's often the hand on the chest. Especially if showing off a new engagement ring!

What a revelationary insight. Excuse me, while I take note of that for academic purposes.

It's a pose used by celebrities to elongate the body and look slimmer. Upper torso is also tilted to one side, one leg forward with bent knee etc.

Look at any pic of Victoria Beckham, please note that normal people smile.

    'Elbow triangles' isn't it.

The Whispers people did a scientific study on it once, they've even ranked the top5.
    http://waterfordwhispersnews.com/2015/08/06/the-5-sexiest-elbow-triangles-youll-ever-see/

But No.5 should be disqualified for attempting a double triangle, it's too much all at once.
